In a January post Joystiq, citing an unnamed source, said a remake of the classic 1989 Nintendo football game Tecmo Bowl was in the works. Today, courtesy of the ESRB, we learned that Tecmo Bowl Throwback is more than just a rumor.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board released its rating information on Tecmo Bowl Throwback this morning:

This is a top-down arcade-style football game in which players compete against teams around the country to become the "Tecmo Bowl Champion." Some of the football highlights are depicted in animated cutscenes (with better graphics); a few non-football highlights depict cheerleaders wearing low-cut tops while dancing. And a jumbotron screen displays a 2D swimsuit model with some exposed cleavage.

The game, rated "E" for everyone, will be available for the Xbox 360 and the PS3. No word yet from Tecmo Koei on whether or not Throwback Bo Jackson possesses the superhuman abilities of his forefather, but Joystiq's evidently accurate source did provide a few more details:

Dubbed "Tecmo Bowl Throwback," the game is a remake of the NES classic, complete with HD graphics and an updated soundtrack -- it also retains the original plays and team stats. And for those of you who fear the fancy-schmancy graphics of high-def games, Tecmo is also including an option to play Tecmo Bowl in its original state. There's even team customization, ensuring your lifelong dream of creating a horribly out-of-shape and uncompetitive Joystiq team is a real possibility.

We'll keep you posted on Throwback Tecmo Bowl as we learn more. Kudos to Siliconera.com for spotting the ESRB post.
