Wow. Duncan and Nazr get three fouls each in the first half and everybody in Denver is crying about the foul calls. If they'd spent more time playing and less time whining about calls they might have been able to steal one. I'm shocked at how the Nuggets were the ones hard fouling, throwing elbows and getting flagrant fouls and they think somehow Bowen should be whistled just by virtue of the fact that Ray Allen and Vince Carter don't like him.

Karl is saying that to engergize his team? Didn't he learn anything from his jackass players who couldn't keep their mouths shut. That's why Camby and KFart looked so winded this game-they were jibberjabbering for the last three damn days. What the fuck is Camby spoking saying that the Spurs aren't physical? George Karl is a beaten man. He basically just conceded the series with that press conference act.
Actaully, Melo may have beaten him to the punch by conceding the series with that lame attempt at a hard foul.

It's a lot like what Jordan would do, when he really needed to score sometimes he'd drive into the lane, it was almost always a win-win situation for him much like Manu, he was a good free throw shooter and he would either score, get fouled, or score and get fouled, I don't see what's wrong with it at all if you have the balls to go in there then you deserve to get the calls....

Except that it's already happened. They cried all through this game thinking they were somehow supposed to get more favorable calls than they got. I could go back and try to be objective, but I think they got as many bad calls in their favor as against them. Boykins cried at every single whistle and the fans booed like crazy regardless. Championship teams don't react that way.

Well in the Lakers series last year and the year before, after the first two games in SA were won Jackson started to complain about the calls and sure enough in game three the advantage in FT attempts shifted to the Lakers.

I think Karl has seen how Phil Jackson managed to sway officials with his terminal case of oral vaginasitis. The only difference is that Jackson was the man with a boat load of championships. Karl is the guy who could never win the big one, and his pissing and moaning (which he seems to have taught his entire team) shows why. He's got a ton of excuses but no answers.

Except that neither Jackson nor the officials were out there missing open shots. The Spurs couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat last year, and that's the reason the Lakers won.

Here's a word-for-word recap of Karl's press conference...
Karl: Questions?
Reporter: George, how much did foul shooting put you guys in a hole?
I thought in the first half the free throws and offensive rebounds kinda stopped us from kinda getting into a kind of Denver Nugget game. I mean, they played really well without Duncan and had just a... pretty fantastic basketball game...
I thought we fought our tails off in the second half. I was really happy with how we played.... you know, we fought, caught up, Horry makes the threes, we caught up again, they get some tough calls that go against us... You know we just kinda had a hole we could never get out of. Took a lot of energy, but it's a process.
What we've got to worry about is winning Game 4. And if we can get Game 4, the thing will come to the situation where we'll learn more tonight, we'll learn more Game 4, and it become a 3 game series. And I think we're very capable of winning Game 4.
Coach, on your roster, is there a set "go-to guy" or is it different for each game?
Hmmm.. I'm not a big... I don't believe in go-to guys unless you have one of the top 5 players in basketball. You know, go-to guys are dictate by matchups and circumstances and situations. Earl's been good in clutch situations, Carmelo's been good for me in situations like that, but I would say 75-80% of the time we do it through team and just kind of... making stops, you know, I'm a big believer that you win more by making stops, and you let your defense create your offense.
But you know... they have Duncan. And Ginobili tonight was the hot hand so it was pretty easy that they were going to go to him.
George, were you surprised how well they did after Dncan went out early?
Not really, you know, they're a big time team. Ginobili, they gave him a lot of touches and he responded tremendously, and you know... I'm just gonna put on tape to give to my son on how to play basketball, you just put your head down and run into people, and I guess that's the new brand of basketball we have, you know. Every 5-10 years there's a new style that comes in, but I don't think it's very pretty for basketball, but he just goes in there and throws his arms up and throws his elbows into us, and he's so quick that you don't necessarily get great body position, but he hits you as much as you hit him, and... and, uh, I don't know, I just think it's very difficult to defend, referee or watch, unless you're the San Antonio Spurs.
Are you encouraged by the defense on Tim Duncan and Tony Parker? Both had pretty awful shooting nights, and you actually put Buckner in to pick up Parker on the inbounds...
In general in tonight's game, we tried to win with a defensive mentality... And being down 9 at half, I thought we came out with that mentality from the very beginning, you know, held them to 10 or 11 points in the third quarter, and... you know, in the fourth quarter, they scored some points, but it was basically foul shots...
It was just a tough refereed game, man, and I hate complaining about refereeing, but on our home court we got so many tough calls... BS calls... I mean, the charge Danny Crawford called on Andre Miller was incredibly bad. And it just seems... Carmelo gets killed. They walk underneath him every time he touches the ball. Earl's geting bumped, but because he's so small he doesn't get the respect. Ginobili gets the same bump and he goes to the free throw line... and we did not lose the game because of the free throw line, and the fouling, but I just don't think we got a very good whistle, and I was really disappointed in some of the calls.
Coach, can you explain the decision to sit Wesley tonight?
I just wanted to play Earl and Buck a little bit more.
Ray Allen was outspoken this year about Bruce Bowen and the way he plays defense, is there something to that, and perhaps... do you want to comment on that?
(Laughs) Again, I mean San Antonio is a great defensive team, and all great defensive players kinda get away with it. You know, they have a reputation. And I think he gets away with stuff. I think he walks under you, I think he holds and grabs on cuts, ... you know, he's clever, he puts his hands up after he bumps you... and sometimes the referee always gets the second foul, but I thought Carmelo did a nice job figuring him out... and as I told the team, it's a process. I know you're disappointed, you're discouraged, but if we continue to learn and get better and win Game 4, there's a lot things that can happen.

This was a move straight out of the Phil Jackson coaching school on how to play the Spurs in the playoffs...
and unfortunately it usually worked for the Lakers...
Karl better be careful what he ask's for though...Phil Jackson had a team that could execute out of the half court and didn't live and die on fast break points...
a choppy whistle filled game goes to the Spurs advantage simply because of the way the team is philosophically designed...

I question his assertion that a game where physical play is allowed favors the Spurs.
Let's see, as far as size and physicality, you've got Miller vs. Parker... advantage Nuggets.
Manu vs. Buckner/Johnson... advantage Nuggets.
Bowen vs. Anthony... slight advantage Spurs (Melo gave as much as he got last night in that matchup).
Duncan vs. Martin... advantage Nuggets.
Nazr vs. Camby... advantage Nuggets.
And let us not forget Nene/Najera off the bench. I don't think there's any question which team should benefit the most from a game where the refs allow physical play.

If George truly dislikes the type of play he describes in the quote above, then it doesn't say much for his parenting skills.
I have a feeling George's son, if old enough to watch a game, would probably pay more attention to the incredible floor vision and pin-point passing to his teammates (2 in a row to Udrih flashing past Boykins)...or a guard pulling in 9 rebounds and seemingly being in 2 places at once...or Manu's incredible reverse lay-ups avoiding contact with almost cartoon-like elasticity. That's the kind of stuff kids might notice more.

Why? All the Spurs defenders can keep in front of him or block his shots. He's a total non-factor. If you want your team to be thugs you should root for the Nuggets.

Why would you want to hurt the guy when he gets his shot blocked every time he goes in the paint?
Are turnovers bad? :lol

Hurting people?.. thats not us... maybe it is for some thug teams in the league.. but we don't play that way, hell we help another teams player up off of the floor if we were to charge into him. Its really never been our personality.

Very true, SpursFanDan, very true.
George just wants his ball back. Then he's going home.

Did y'all catch Elliott last night? "You'll have to forgive the Nuggets fans crying about the officiating, they aren't used to watching playoff games."

They aren't used to watching basketball. It's not like they show up for games until the Nuggets start to win. A bunch of them probably wouldn't have bothered to show up if they weren't sure the Nuggets were going to beat the Spurs. It's apparently not enough to just root for your team and to be grateful for a good season.

Its ok, Manu will get his soon and The better team, the Nuggets will prevail.

I would say George Karl is a genuis. It's obvious all those dirty fouls and cheap shots are not keeping Manu out of the paint, so if Manu is as sensitive as he is, he will second guess his "style of basketball", or better yet, stop driving to the basket all together.
Oh wait, nobody is as sensitive as George Karl ... nobody is.
