Why do teams call a timeout when a player throwing an inbound pass can't find anyone, why not just hit the ball on the guy defending you and make it go out on him instead of wasting precious timeouts?

Because if you fail to hit the player, or hit the player glancingly, it could result in a turnover. Better to take the sure timeout than risk a possession.

Sure, in certain instances, it makes sense, but late in games, when your scenario is more common, the smart move is the safe move.
