The Japanese complained about it being too linear, which I find disappointing, because XII was so open to exploration.

XII bugged the hell out of me, for reasons I can't entirely explain. It wasn't the battle system, but it might have been too open for my liking. At least it wasn't as open as FF2j was.

I REALLY don't like RPGs on rails, I like to explore and I was first disappointed with that aspect in FFX until the ending made it worth it. FF13 doesn't look all that great to me since I haven't seen world map exploration...I kind of feel that's what makes a good RPG great.
As for the leak, I have no idea how to manage stuff like that or even get a hold of it. Those pirate guyz r rly smart.

ALL Final Fantasy games are linear. How anyone could complain about it must have NEVER played a previous Final Fantasy game. Sure there might be a side quest here and there but it has ALWAYS been linear. The most non-linear Final Fantasy has been FF7 and even that would be considered a stretch comparing to the likes of The Elder Scrolls series.
Final Fantasy has ALWAYS been about the story, and I am fine with that.

you don't play a jRPG expecting open-endness. you play those for stories.
Here's one RPG where I won't be disappointed they stuck with the formula.

Have they gone back to a turn-based system? The last FF I finished was FF X, which I really liked. X-2 was a huge piece of shit IMO, mostly because I hated the combat system.

I'm surprised. Most people's issue was that they were "paying 50 bucks to play pretty princess dress-up." Didn't mind X-2, personally, but my biggest issue was the change to Blitzball.

With that definition, every RPG I've played is linear. I'm referring to the world map aspect, where a player can walk/sail/fly around. FF13's story looks weak, and as someone that's played Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Lunar, and Grandia...I like to think I can judge a book by its cover. Even though the cover is nice and shiny, I hate the book feeling like it's on rails with no chance to branch out even for a bit :p:
The other FF13 looks cooler, with the swords and shit.

I think this one looks the worst of what I've seen them shell out in recent years.
I'll wait for them to release Versus to hopefully redeem the series.

Looks like an RPG on rails to me.

I hated that too, and I gave up on FFXII as well b/c of that.

Nice, props to allstars on the release (http://scenereleases.info/2010/03/final-fantasy-xiii-x360-allstars.html)
And of course a jrpg is on rails, its a tradition. More of presenting a story in a book or movie-like format as opposed to western rpgs that generally let you do whatever you want.
