Free agency is gonna be pretty lame this year because of all the restricted free agents. I feel bad for the player who could have signed a lucrative deal and will end up tearing his ACL this year after signing a 1 year tender offer.

It shouldn't be a pipe dream, the Patriots should be one of the favorites to land him and should be throwing money at him. This front office has gotten a little too obsessed with having great "value" players and not going after marquee players. "Value" players you get in the 2nd round are only gonna get you so far.

Bears: ‘Pretty Good Offer’ For Peppers
SportingNews 1 hour, 54 minutes ago

Chicago is giving Panthers free-agent defensive end Julius Peppers the grand tour of its facilities, and a deal is imminent. That’s according to a report from Sirius NFL Radio.
A source told the network that the Bears have a "pretty good offer" on the table for Peppers, and chances are they won’t let him leave the Windy City without a whole lot of cash.

It was no secret that Lovie Smith coveted a pass rusher of Peppers’ caliber, and after a couple of down years on the Bears’ defensive line, they needed an impact player. Hopefully, for them, an investment in Peppers will pay off in boosting their pass rush for the next few years.

Vanden Bosch sucks now.

That's probably true, at least compared to what he was even a couple seasons ago. But, sometimes beggars can't be choosers. And even if he isn't that good, he'd still probably be an upgrade over what the Lions had at DE last year. I'm sure the Lions are hoping that reuniting with his old defensive coordinator will get him back closer to what he was a few years ago. It's a longshot, but like I said, beggars can't be choosers. It's not like Julius Peppers was a realistic acquisition for the Lions.

Patriots the favorites to land Boldin

The National Football Post's Aaron Wilson reports the Patriots are the front-runners to land Anquan Boldin.

Say this for the Patriots: they know a good value when they see one. At the cost of a third-rounder, Boldin is a no-brainer. His next team has him under contract cheaply for the 2010 season with a year to work out a contract. If no deal can be reached, the cost was still just a third-rounder for one season of a possible difference-maker.

Cardinals waive Pro-Bowler Antrelle Rolle, get some CAP savings, which benefits them nothing.
Cardinals let Pro-Bowler Dansby walk, receiving nothing in return.
Cardinals trade Pro-Bowler Boldin and a 5th for a 3rd/4th, which saves them money.
Cardinals Do NOT go after Antonio Cromartie, who would have cost them relatively nothing for his potential.

Fantastic offseason thus far...

Rolle really doesn't. He's not worth being the highest paid safety in the NFL. Dansby is a good (not great) linebacker so not being willing to pay him like he's a great linebacker makes sense to me but I'm still mad at the hole they have at ILB. Trading Boldin for trash is the inexplicable thing to me that's really enraging.

JMarkJohns
03-05-2010, 10:59 PM
In the greater context, the Rolle process bothers me greatly. What, the Giants wouldn't trade a 4th for Rolle, then restructure the deal?

Letting Dansby walk pisses me off immensely. Had the Cardinals resigned Dansby, traded Rolle for a 4th, traded Boldin for the 3rd/4th package, then dealt their own 3rd to San Diego for Antonio Cromartie, then I'd have been thrilled.

This? Pisses me off...

The Cardinals have a giant hole at QB that prevents them from going anywhere, regardless of Rolle and Dansby. If they never replace Rolle and Dansby, then I'll be pissed. I'm not gonna fault them for not being willing to pay two good (not great) defensive players as if they are bonafied studs. Shitty luck to have 2 of the best unrestricted FA's in an uncapped year when there are very few unrestricted FA's to compete for money.

I like what the cardinals have done, they let 2 guys go who are now the highest paid at their positions, overpaying for players doesn't get you to the SB. Cards got the best years out of them at reasonable prices and will now get some good comp picks from them. the Rhodes trade was a steal too IMO. Boldin probably should have gotten them a 2nd, especially if a guy like Cro can bring back a 3rd or 2nd...

But all in all, good moves for the cards, they lose Warner and will probably struggle next year anyways as it's Leinart's first, so no need to overspend, just get some draft picks and reload for 2011/12, Cards have been drafting pretty well in recent years too.

The Cardinals, as far as I know, did not tender Dansby. He walks, no comp. As for Rolle, they waived him, so, as far as I know, no comp.

The Rhodes trade seems pretty shrewd. It could work out great, it could not work out at all. Either way, they replaced the hole with a less-contracted, equal upside type player... perhaps less of an athlete, but more of a safety?

I'm upset about Dansby... tender him for a 2nd-rounder to get something for him, or re-sign him, but don't just let him walk.

I'm not as upset about Boldin, though had they relented last draft, they could have had a 2nd/3rd for him straight up. They waited, he slipped, his stock plummets. Sucks, but at least they got a few picks for him, one of which acquired Rhodes (or at least gave an extra fourth to have the ability to acquire Rhodes.

If they get a comp pick or two for Dansby, then it takes the sting off a bit, but, and I'm pretty certain, they won't be.

Rolle was waived? whoa that makes much less sense, I thought he was a FA.
Dansby should bring a 3rd round comp pick, he got the big contract, if he plays well and Arizona doesn't sign a FA to a big deal, Ari should get a third for that.

Not sure there's a difference, but they released him/waived him... whatever...

Not sure how this compensatory pick stuff works. Do they not get this possible pick until next draft, not this draft? Seems they should work out a compensatory system similar to MLB where FA's are ranked based upon a two or three-year basis, then ranked where an A-level restricted FA beings in a compensatory pick after the 1st round, and an A-level unrestricted has the acquiring team giving up their 1st (if had) or a combination of picks based upon some subjective determination...

yeah It'll be a 2011 draft pick, I'm no expert on it either, but it's mostly dependent on the contract they got, and there is also playing time and production factored in. also, first they try to cancel out incoming and outgoing FA signings. so if Arizona signs a big free agent, he'll most likely cancel out Dansby. and I think it's all relative too, they give out a certain number of 3rd rounders, 4th rounders etc. and if some other teams lost even more than you, you could be bumped down to a 4th rounder.

but yeah, it has to be a FA, Arizona should have shopped Rolle rather than release him, could have gotten a 4th easy, probably better

Rolle was owed over 12 million in this final year of his contract, especially since they got a better safety for cheaper. Dansby is a separate issue, but the way they've addressed the Rolle/Rhodes thing was perfect.

Rolle is a fantastic athlete with solid cover skills and better than solid safety skills, but is basically a great athlete/good player.

I didn't realize Rolle was owed 12 million this year. Now his release makes plenty of sense. That's a ton of money for a good, but not great player. Rhodes easily makes up for that.

I heard on the radio that the Cardinals could be one of a handful of teams that are using this UNCAPPED season to clear their rosters of bad contracts, building their talent-base through the draft, and saving their CAP space for the CAPPED season that is likely to follow. It was going to be a transition year anyways with Leinart, so it makes sense if they are doing that. They could have a substantial amount of money to spend in 2011 and have a very good to great young foundation to build around.

Goran Dragic
03-06-2010, 11:56 PM
The only thing I'm pissed about is them wasting a year to realize Leinart always will suck when they could be using this year to develop a QB who could actually have a future.

JMarkJohns
03-07-2010, 12:06 AM
I'm not convinced they don't draft a a QB like Lefevour in the 2nd round. They could use a high upside QB and if Leinart ends up sucking after six games, throwing Lefevour out there to get his feet wet.

They need to use their 1st on a pass-rushing OLB/hybrid DE, but after that, QB in the 2nd, a CB and DT with their 3rds and a OL in the 4th. With their 6th and 7th I figure two more lineman, either DT or OL.

Me too... I would mind them trading up to net him earlier in the 2nd if they have to. Most mocks have him in the 3rd, but there's always a premium on QB's, so I expect 2nd round. Hopefully he's there for the taking with their late 2nd.

Revis and Cromartie? Where the fuck can you throw the ball on that D?
Same hype was thrown on the Broncos dbs year before last. Blew an 8-5 three game lead to the Chargers, including the season ender where PRivers roasted them.

As Gordon MultiTroll pointed out, Cromarte should be ripe for the picking.
Cromarte may up his cocaine dozage and actually play with an ounce of effort, but he looks done.
Revis is good, but Rivers threw a perfect pass to Vincent Puss Out Jackson in the playoffs for a would-be good gain and 1st and 10 at the Jets 20 with huge momentum. Jackson not only butterfingered the pass but let it bounce off his vagina for a very greasy INT for Revis. Revis is hardly unbeatable.

Ryan runs a hybrid D. When Mangini was running a true 3-4 D he played well. And he didn't lose the starting job, he had a conflict with the coaches. When it mattered most in the playoffs, Rhodes was in and played well.

i love that the skins are not throwing the money around as the media had predicted last week.

i have a sigh of relief going on over here.

they will build a TEAM, and not just assemble players looking to get paid after a standout performance in a contract year...

finally.

+1 to them then, I felt bad for Skins fans having to watch their team try to build through free agency every year. This is just me but I'd still take Eric Berry if I were them. That D was so sick when it had Landry and Taylor and they'd basically get that back.

Ryan runs a hybrid D. When Mangini was running a true 3-4 D he played well. And he didn't lose the starting job, he had a conflict with the coaches. When it mattered most in the playoffs, Rhodes was in and played well.

Dude, he lost his job!
Here, I'll give a quote:

Jets get two picks for Rhodes

Associated Press

"After Ryan was hired as the Jets' coach last year, he immediately compared Rhodes to Pro Bowler Ed Reed. He said Rhodes could fill the playmaking role Reed excelled in under Ryan for several years in Baltimore.
The high praise was the result of the 12 interceptions, nine sacks and five forced fumbles Rhodes had in his first four seasons. But Rhodes struggled to live up to that hype, producing no turnovers through the first 10 games.
The coaches began to have doubts about the desire of Rhodes, who has aspirations of having an acting career after football. So Ryan and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine pulled him from the base defensive package in favor of Eric Smith.
Rhodes was on the sideline for New York's opening defensive snap against Carolina on Nov. 29, the first time in his NFL career that he didn't start."

Jamal Williams close to signing with the Broncos, waiting for the physical..great signing IMO..he's no longer a dominant player, but he should be good enough to play 1st and 2nd for most of the game..it also sticks it to San Diego, so that's the best part..

Jarvis Green is meeting with the Broncos at some point today too, hopefully McDaniels gets him..

Looks like it's going to be an offensive draft..

Thomas Jones signed with the Chiefs today, and Willie Parker looks like he might do the same...hopefully these guys are insurance for Charles. If they end up taking snaps from him I'm going to be fucking pissed

Why, because Jones is better?

The Willie Parker visit has been canceled.

Supposedly TJ is there simply to back up JC. But I have my doubts. I'm also a little iffy about this signing for the same reasons. JC could be a stud, but if he's reduced to a 15 carry back, we'll never see it. I suspect that we're going to be a heavy run team now. Upwards of 32 carries per games. It wouldn't be bad if JC can still get 18-20 carries, and TJ gets 10-12.

Charles isn't the kind of back that needs 20+ carries to be effective, he's not a grinder, he'll be all the better with TJ to take some of the load.
it's a 2 back NFL now anyways, not too many Eddie Georges or Larry Johnsons left, and even if there were, it just isn't very successful to run a power back all day and hope the defense wears down before he does.

Agreed, I've been saying Charles is a Chris Johnson clone. The guy can run through and around defenders, been a stud since his HS days in Port Arthur.

Not sure what to expect from the signing, but Joey Porter to Arizona Cardinals for 3 years, roughly 17 million... led NFL in sacks in 2008, then still had 9 last season is a diminished role as the Dolphins went young half the time. I'm hopeful for 10+ in this first season, if not the next, but I hold little hope for good production beyond that.

he should help lessen the loss of dansby, no?

i read his deal maxes out at 24 mil if he hits incentives...i'd guess sack based.

he might very well be worth that kind of jack,
but i'm glad the skins aren't overpaying...
or desperately trying to match these deals...
as he was at redskins park yesterday for a visit.

Not really. Dansby was inside and was more of a stop-gap for the inside run. Porter is all about putting pressure at the line of scrimmage and getting to the quarterback. Not nearly as versatile, but more of a specific skill. He addresses an area of concern, so it's a good signing on paper. His signing frees them up to use their 1st and 2nd on ILB and DT or CB, then add some offensive weapons (OL and TE) with their two thirds. The Cardinals have rebounded pretty well from their disastrous start. They added a quality backup/starting option in Anderson, added two veteran linebackers and acquired Rhodes on the cheap. Most have question marks, but each came at the total cost of one of the contracts of Dansby or Rolle. Boldin is still a glaring hole to fill, but a good pass-catching TE will help.

Going to be interesting to see what the Cards do with so many key losses in FA (and retirement) this year.

Rhodes = Rolle (less athleticism, but similar production)
Lenon & Porter > Dansby (depth and pass rush)
Anderson <<< Warner (but he could make some throws if given time)

Cardinals haven't addressed Boldin, but a good pass-catching TE in round two or early round three could nicely replace his across-the-middle production, which is the biggest area that will be missed. The Cardinals also get their 2nd-rounder from last year back from injury. So, they've added three linebackers to replace one, and will likely add an additional inside linebacker in the 3rd or 4th round.

My guess is in the draft...

1st: DT or CB
2nd: CB or DT
3rd: OL or TE
3rd: TE or OL
4th: ILB
5th: OL
6th: DT
7th: OL or CB

They've had excellent drafts of late. Some of the best top to bottom of any team. I have faith in their draft. I'm hopeful Leinart or Anderson can make the necessary throws and that Wells can become a mainstay feature back good for 20+ carries a game.

I don't trust Bidwell, but there's nothing in Whisenhunt's resume' that says I shouldn't trust him.

The Cards will be fine at receiver with Fitz and Breaston outside with Doucet in the slot. I'll be really disappointed if they go DT early. Allan Branch deserves the job as starting nose tackle next year, he played well in limited time this year and found ways to beat double teams. Didn't get enough snaps, idk why Gabe Watson and Robinson earned such a heart warming spot in Whisenhunt's asshole but Branch is way better than either one and didn't play enough.

The main concern with the team is still QB, with CB/ILB/O-line all being other concerns.

1st: CB
2nd: OL
3rd: ILB
3rd: QB
4th: TE
5th: DT
6th: OL
7th: CB or OL or DT

If they could get Lefevour with a 3rd rounder I'd be happy. I'll eventually get over it but i think they made a big mistake letting David Carr go to the 49ers. Since next year is a rebuilding year it'd be great timing to draft an OT or CB so he could have a year to get used to the NFL. Those are two positions that have a learning curve.

lol David Carr

The dude is shell shocked from his time in Houston. The dude has a rifle arm but unless you want your RB getting 90% of the passes thrown his way there is no way you should want him on your team.

He wasn't a bust as much as he was mishandled. Getting sacked 78 times your rookie year can really fuck with the development of a QB. Also, he didn't have even an NCAA level O-line much less an NFL line.

I'm sure a line that gave him no time in the pocket has a lot to do with the amount of dump offs he threw. I'd love to see him get a chance with a good line and good receivers just out of curiosity.

Come on now, everyone knew he wasn't a NFL QB, he was a 9-5 guy, who didn't take advantage of the tools he had. Sure, the line wasn't of any help, but he held the ball WAYYYY to long and caused alot of those sacks himself. Andre even said that David was a loner, and would be the last one to practice and the first one out

Dumbass Joey Porter arrested for DUI, Resisting Arrest and (possible) Assault on an Officer.

Awesome... So, it would seem the Cardinals now need an OLB afterall.
