And the writer seems to insinuate that eating tacos for breakfast is some kind of gringo hipster Austin thing.
Yeah, SA folks never eat tacos for breakfast...

Meh. South Texas in general has some great places for breakfast tacos. There's a few taquerias in El Valle that I'd put up against any in Austin or SA.

Although, isn't there a place in SA that was voted the best taco in America? I went there once, but I've since forgotten the name.

What's the big deal about making good breakfast tacos? It's not that difficult to do, the secret is in the quality of the tortilla.

Not really its starts with a good tortilla, but you can really make bad egg a la mexicana, carne guisada, pappa la etc....

When I lived in Plano, that is one of the most things I missed about SA.

True. As do many places in Texas. Hell, I've had some great breakfast tacos in Johnson city.
I guess the point is that eating tacos for breakfast is not some insanely hip and off-the-wall Austin invention/tradition. Unless you're a NYT writer that is.

It's one of the things I'm most ashamed of that as a life-long Texan, I have not sampled San Antonio's mexican cuisine. I think as a child my parents took me to the Alamo Cafe, but it was more akin to Herbert's in San Marcos. I really need to sample some S.A. tex-mex and mexican establishments (non Riverwalk, because those places didn't look at all appetizing).

This reminds me of the WCF in 1995 when we were playing the Rockets. I read an article in the paper and they were asking Houstonians why they hate San Antonio. I remember one of the answers being "because they don't know how to make good mexican food like we do."

Sure....

Oh, and I have had a lot of good carne guisada here in san antonio, but I had been looking for one that was clearly above the rest for a while. I found it in Casa Posada on Grissom but it has two problems. First it is inconsistant: about 80-85% of the time it is the best I have had, the remaining it is too salty, or tastes like someone missed an ingredient. Secondly, their tortillas aren't great. They aren't bad, but just average.

I get the Popeye on whole wheat and have them add ham & fresh jalapenos. My favorite breakfast taco right now.

TacoDeli also makes their bean & cheese w/ refried black beans and jack cheese. Another simple favorite that goes really well with their Dona salsa - it looks like an avocado green sauce but is actually whipped jalapenos. Just awesome.

as far as big cities go..

San Antonio completely shits on austin when it comes to tex mex cuisine.

But, austin's busy lifestyle has allowed the bfast taco to flourish in that city.

In San Antonio making breakfast tacos is foolish since everyone makes them at home, or everyone has a grandma who does it for them. In austin, they have their grandmas in retirement homes doing shit.

If you want superior breakfast tacos.. you'll find them west of Georgetown, Texas. After that, every asshole puts cheese on their bfast tacos. That shit is retarded in smacks of ignorance of tradition.

This is the original bfast taco,.

Homemade tortilla
scrambled eggs with potatos
Homemade spicy as f* salsa verde.

The tortilla is only forty percent of the flavor.

It's all about the richness of the salsa verde and the right cooking time of the potatoes and eggs. They can't be two raw and saltless, or too cooked and salty. Just right.

IF you have some bad ass salsa, it will make up for the costco tortilla.

In defense of Torchy's, their breakfast tacos are just the regular, run-of-the-mill shit (except for the migas). It's the other tacos that get pricey. They run about $2.00 each which seems pretty normal to me. That and they're large. Still pretty bland though.

San Antonio vs Austin...I've never had an Austin tacos, but I can definitely say that there is not an even decent breakfast taco outside of Texas that's not made by a Texan. I remember my first year visiting family in Denver, CO and they suggested getting "Breakfast Burritos". Burritos...tacos...they seem pretty similar so we thought go for it. Worst mistake ever! I order a sausage and egg...I get scrambled egg (not even the good kind that was made in the same pan as the bacon) with two sausage patties on top of the egg (SAUSAGE PATTIES, CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!) wrapped in a cardboard tasting tortilla. It was so bad. I'll never eat a breakfast taco outside of Texas ever again.

Better than SA?
And the writer seems to insinuate that eating tacos for breakfast is some kind of gringo hipster Austin thing.
Yeah, SA folks never eat tacos for breakfast...This writers taco credibility is a joke. And comparatively, SA makes shit tacos. I never found a single serviceable mexican restaurant during my four year stint in SA. Nothing comes close to what you can get in the rio grande valley, or mexico.

That doesn't sound too good. We know this.

No tex-mex in LA, from what I know.

There's a place in West Covina called Taste of Texas, but it's not very good. I certainly wouldn't take it over El Tepeyac or even King Taco.

Do you prefer flour tortillas or corn tortillas?

either if they are fresh which makes it harder to choose for me.

the store bought tortillas dont compare to the fresh stuff

Shiit, the breakfast tacos you could pick up at a TexMart in McAllen or anywhere in the valley were better than any non mom/grandma/grandpa(my abuelo was an amazing cook) made taco I've ever had outside the valley. The best restaurant Mexican food I ever ate was during my 10 yrs in the valley. Even now when I go to SPI I detour to McAllen to visit friends and eat a botana or tacos al carbon/pastor.

What's the difference between a breakfast taco and a regular taco? What are the fillings for a breakfast taco?

There are alot of good tacos in SA and I used to not have a favorite place until I tried Guero's Taco Diner. The brisket taco there took me to my oasis.

It's more Mexican then Tex-mex.

Do you prefer flour tortillas for corn tortillas?

IT depends on what kind of Taco it is or me.

I used to go to Juanita's, which was nothing more than a little red shack, for breakfast tacos when I lived in Austin. Of course, Austin can't compare with the Valley (I was born and raised in McAllen), but it's a great city for breakfast tacos if you know where to look.

I did a google search and some tex-mex came up in SoCal.

None of it sounds appealing though.

breakfast tacos use pancakes instead of tortillas, cream cheese instead of sour cream, syrup instead of salsa, plus eggs and sausage. whipped cream & chocolate sauce on top is optional.

I've never seen anyone make fresh tortillas up here. All I've ever eaten are the store-bought kind.

That is quite possibly the saddest thing I've ever read. Eating a freshly made tortilla (especially flour, in my opinion) is like taking a bite of heaven.

Yeah, true, though. Freshly made flour with butter or by itself is great.
