A source told Sports Illustrated. Found it in HoopsHype...

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/frank_hughes/03/12/oden/index.html

One source close to the team said general manager Kevin Pritchard was swayed toward Oden not only because of the Blazers' needs but also because nearly every GM inquired about making a deal for the right to choose Oden, including San Antonio, which was said to be open to offering Tim Duncan. If rivals were considering trading cornerstone players for Oden, it's hard to blame Pritchard for making that choice.

Personally, I don't buy it for a second. Duncan was only 31 at the time, fresh of his fourth championship and still widely regarded as the best player in the game and that doesn't even begin to get into what he means to the franchise. I doubt the Spurs would have considered trading him for a raw 19 year old center who, even if he reached his potential, likely would have taken a handful of years and almost assuredly never would become as good as Duncan.

Nor do I. Anytime you see the phrasing "San Antonio, which was said....", you know BS is to follow. Who said it? Who was it said to? It's just plain ridiculous and fails the common sense test.

This sounds like Portland's attempt to pass the blame for making what appears to be the wrong pick.

"San Antonio would have traded Duncan for him, so we weren't the only ones!"

tmtcsc
03-12-2010, 05:58 PM
Not 1 .oz of truth to that. What a bunch of BS.

I'm not a GM in any shape or form AND I wouldn't even consider trading a sure-fire HOF'er, franchis player for a 1 year college player with a history of injuries. He didn't even dominate in college !!! Are you kidding me ?

Just total, complete nonsense.

What a load of bullshit. You trade a HoFer who changes the game in 100 ways and leads his franchise, for an injury-prone defensive guy yet to prove himself? Utter garbage.

Not a chance this would happen. Spurs learnt their lesson during the DRob/Chris Webber fiasco.

This sounds like a story filler to get a little perk so the readers will finish the piece. If true--how many #1 picks and players to go along with Oden for Tim.

Duncan for Oden + Roy? ;)

bigfan
03-13-2010, 09:08 AM
I call bullshite on this one. The Spurs front office would never offer up Tim in a trade, period. He was drafted a Spur and will retire a Spur, the same as David. They should have shown the same courtesy to Gervin too, I remember seeing him playing in a Bulls uniform at Hemisfair, it was just gut wrenching. Ithink they learned their lesson after that idiot move.

Is this why Pritchard is so disliked? Hilarious. The team was pretty set on bringing back the same players. They signed Bonner over Scola. Pretty sure they weren't even making small changes. Ha.

Man, I couldn't even see the Spurs trading Duncan for LeBron in 07, much less a rookie (albeit a rookie who was considered as can't miss as they come).

SI your full of shit. Spurs Titled that year only a retard or SI staff member would offer that trade

It's irrational to think a team coming off of a championship season would trade it's centerpiece/franchise player for the No. 1 draft pick. Yeah, if this was likely maybe in '97 Chicago would've traded Jordan for the chance to draft Timmy. Or maybe the Lakers would swapped Kobe Bryant for the opportunity to draft Blake Griffin.

Both are believable if you go by the nonsense in this article regarding the Spurs trading Duncan.

This is said, in an attempt, to hide the fact that the Blazers went LaRue Martin again. Classic fuckup then, classic fuckup now.
Duncan is the Best PF to ever play the game, them saying that Pop would've cleared TD to get someone who plays even older than TD is truly laughable. Lookup LaRue Martin.

BTW LOL at half the names in the draft thread, one dude mentioned someone who gave Durant or Texas trouble who has no been heard from since, and others mention some players who I never heard of in my life after a colllege game lol. Shows you how much of a gamble it is from the links dude sent above, most of those guys turn out to be nothing at all and so many wanted them in here at the time.
