Obama surrenders gulf oil to Moscow

THE WASHINGTON TIMES

The Obama administration is poised to ban offshore oil drilling on the outer continental shelf until 2012 or beyond. Meanwhile, Russia is making a bold strategic leap to begin drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico. While the United States attempts to shift gears to alternative fuels to battle the purported evils of carbon emissions, Russia will erect oil derricks off the Cuban coast.

Now Russia is using oil exploration to establish a new presence in the Western Hemisphere. It recently concluded four contracts securing oil-exploration rights in Cuba's economic zone in the Gulf of Mexico. A Russian-Cuban joint partnership will exploit oil found in the deep waters of the Gulf.

Cuba has rights to the area in which drilling will be conducted under an agreement the Carter administration recognized. From Russia's perspective, this is another way to gain leverage inside what traditionally has been America's sphere of influence. It may not be as dramatic as the Soviet Union attempting to use Cuba as a missile platform, but in the energy wars, the message is the same. Russia is projecting power into the Western Hemisphere while the United States retreats. The world will not tolerate a superpower that acts like a sidekick much longer.

This bit has already been debunked.

The total amount of oil in the small area in question is:

1) not very big
and
2) pretty much in cuba's waters anyway

If you like, I can try to re-find the links to this failed editorial.

Why would you post something like this that is pretty much a lie?

What failed? What lie. None of you guys read the editorial.

Barry keeps us from drilling for oil. Meanwhile our allie, Russia, is getting a larger portion of the world's oil from our new trading partner, cuba. This is strategically bad to have russia in america's shores like this. I wonder why Russia didn't do this while bush was president. seeing as how bush was building missile shields? Didn't MB and WH tell them that the dems and repubs were the same thing?

I read the editorial.

Not only that the assertion is ooooold, and I researched the claim when I first heard it, and debunked it.

The lie is in the entire implication:

"Obama surrenders Gulf Oil to Moscow."

The "Gulf Oil" in question involves a very small strip of sea floor closer to Cuba than the US in Cuban waters.

How exactly does this involve the US "surrendering Gulf Oil" to Moscow if the oil was not ours to begin with?

The title also implies that Obama has surrendered ALL Gulf Oil.

That is actually two lies.

1)Obama didn't surrender something he couldn't have.

2)The bit involved wasn't all the Gulf Oil anyways.

Lastly, I am fairly sure that Cuban sanctions include prohibitions against US companies contracting with the Cuban government for oil exploration.

Obama was a *bit* young to have put those prohibitions in place, don't you think?

Are you advocating rolling back the trade sanctions on Cuba?

I would agree with that, whole-heartedly.

free trade, russia, cuba????

these are governments we are talking about, right? Not a bad point.

Still, since when do we get to tell Cuba who they can do business with or what they can do in their own territorial waters?

So does SnC want to invade Russia or Cuba?

Or both?

We could use the Monroe Doctrine. Since Cuba is our new trading partner and obama made some decisions to benefit russia, we should easily be able to tell them they cannot do this. it would be different if russia didn't arrest the owners of all the oil companies and nationalize it. Also with russias recent history of taking over pipelines n then strong arming all our allies and trying to claim the entire arctic sea as their territory, it's easy to see this as a geo-political strategy to take claim to as much oil reseviors as possible.

We could use the Monroe Doctrine.

This isn't the 1950s. Those rules don't apply anymore. With the increasing emphasis the world is putting on globalization and free trade, their is no need for archaic pieces of legislation like the Monroe Doctrine. It's called capitalism, it's legal and it's fair. Stop being a god damn dictator.

Private ownership of business, trade of goods and resources in the world market for profit.

The U.S. has ZERO input in what Cuba does. None whatsoever. For nearly 60 years the U.S. has had an embargo on Cuba and has done nothing whatsoever to have any financial transactions with them. They have no ground to stand on to tell Cuba who they can and can't do business with.

It's called soverignty. The right to have authority over your own borders and resources.
