"The federal No Child Left Behind education act is dead. President Barack Obama drove a stake through its heart this week."

That's great news! No Child Left Behind took schools that needed more resources and gave them less. Finally, they're doing something about it.

Federal regs for local schools being re-written, again, yawn.
American Imperial Empire is in full decline, and failure of American kids to do their homework and compete with other nations in school achievement is a sure sign of dumbed down America, with citizens stupid enough to be passive spenders, consumers, fat-ass overeaters, self-sickening calves for their financial slaughter by for-profit health ripoff, eternally non-vigilant, and dupes for the kleptocratic plutocracy.

Do you have an exact example of a school?

I am going to guess you used a purposefully retarded headline on purpose.
If one were to actually read the op-ed piece you cite, not even it supports the headline.
Why did you post a lie in the thread title?

Deceptive thread title. The article is actually about Obama following Texas' lead on fixing NCLB's problems. The biggest issue was that NCLB taught to the test - new initiatives focus on college and career prep.

I'm betting you don't know many teachers.

My spouse is a teacher and thinks that teaching to pass a test isn't the best use of their or their students time.
As earlier stated, you must not know many teachers becasue all of the one's I know think the testing they do now sucks.

I remember one complaint about SA St Mary's Univ Law School was that it taught law only to pass the TX bar exam. Still true?

Many Republicans, Democrats, the left, the right, education experts, state officials, teachers (and, more importantly, their unions) and school administrators hated it

Exactly. NCLB took this to a new level. It needs work and I'm glad Obama is working with it. :toast

Yeah, I've actually heard the same thing many times.

I think that's a different sort of thing. They teach to the bar because a higher bar passage rate helps their school ranking, and as a Tier 4 law school, that's going to be their focus.

The title would be perfect for Fox News.

I've got no problem with testing, but the objectives the powers that be expect at each grade get too difficult too soon, so kids resort to memorizing a lot of crap instead of a deeper understanding of basic concepts...

good answer. It takes away your need to use facts by just belittling and marginalizing me. How does my first hand experience with teachers have anything to do with you using specific examples instead of living in a straw house? wrong though.

I'm pretty sure knowing teachers is a good example of what is wrong with the program. I know a few teachers, and I'm a year away from becoming one and they all agree that No Child Left Behind is a joke. My cousin, also a teacher has stated that you basically have to help a failing child as much as possible short of just giving them the grade.
For Republicans to bash this sort of thing, when their entire platform lies on not giving handouts from the government, it reeks of hypocrisy and idiocy.

what republicans are you talking about?
I know teachers who say they did not change anything of their teaching style. that it is immoral to train a child to a test. I am pretty sure an authoritarian teacher would see something differently than a libertarian teacher. just because you know one who agrees with your view point doesn't show any facts. that was my point that you replied to.

Teachers are not saints. They fuck up too.
We do need to grade the performance of our teachers. If a walmart stocker gets his perf graded, why not a teacher?
I don't know what Obama is going to do, and NCLB had a good purpose, but failed because it was trying to push a free market tool, (performance grading) in a socialist system.
Throwing money at inner city schools doesn't do shit either, Robin HOod failed.
anyway the failure of our education system is never ever revealed. In primary and secondary education, teachers blame the parents. In college, professors blame the grade school teachers, and the problem is never found or solved. Maybe it's neither. Maybe it's the public education system top down.

Maybe it's a culture that doesn't trust intellectuals and doesn't value education as highly as it pretends to.

This is it. In America, you're a loser if you get great grades in public school. In Asia, you're a damn failure if you get anything less.
Our culture is retarded. The dumb just breed more dumb people. The top 2% of our educational system is excellent compared to other nations and the bottom 98% sucks.

We pride ourselves on our anti-intellectualism. Hell, we just had our State Board of Education saying that we need to quit listening to scientists and curriculum experts when trying to decide what to teach our nation's youth.

the scientists were preaching theories as facts. it is not as if scientists are the holders of truth, and anything they say is absolute.

"who prides themselves in anti-intellectualism"
This book is nearly 50 years old, nothing has changed

Scientists "preaching" betrays your own ideologically/politically warped bias, the bias of someone duped by assholes like the Koch brothers and their financing of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, the oil/gas/energy corps to "conserve" their and others' positions as the exploitative, blood-sucking wealthy while beating down the rest of society.

Your second statement answers your first.
Its the notion that because one has an opinion on a matter, that necessarily makes it equal to another's opinion on the same matter, regardless of the amount of knowledge or experience each party has supporting their respective opinions.
It's this -
We are adding balance,” said Dr. Don McLeroy, the leader of the conservative faction on the board, after the vote. “History has already been skewed. Academia is skewed too far to the left."
It's the automatic distrust of the educated or academia.
I'm not saying it's anything new.

come one, scientist just preach theories..I mean the notion that the earth is more than 2, 0000 yrs old is silly. We need to include in text books that the earth could be millions of years old or it could be a couple of thousand yrs old. let the kids decide what they want to believe... stupid liberals (libtards for WC)..

The entire American citizenry, or more accurately, the right wing of this country. In the 8 years of the Bush Presidency alot of people prided themselves on being good old boy rednecks who don't shit about shit. Bush constantly priding himself on being a C student at Yale.
Then we get a Presidential candidate who is actually intelligent and well spoken, and people bash him for being an elitist, or the anti-Christ because he is smart and charismatic.

As if public education before NCLB was the land of milk and honey. Public education works as it was intended. But the public debate will continue on in Groundhog Day fashion as if it is not.
Not to mention that if educational quality was a function of expenditure, American primary and secondary education would be the envy of the world. But it's not. And trying to pin its failings on a policy less than a decade old is ignorant.
