View Full Version : Your Five Must Have Albums

Oh, Gee!!
03-19-2010, 09:46 PM
For me, in no particular order:

Beastie Boys: Check Your Head

De La Soul: Stakes is High

Sublime: 40oz to Freedom

Bob Dylan: Blood on the Tracks

Bob Dylan: Time Out of Mind

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Burnin'
Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele
RATM - RATM
Michael Jackson - HIStory
Outkast - Aquemini

I hate picking albums, I usually just make my own mixes of the artists' work. No way I could actually pick only one Outkast or Marley album.

Beastie Boys: Check Your Head

De La Soul: Stakes is High

Sublime: 40oz to Freedom

Bob Dylan: Blood on the Tracks

Bob Dylan: Time Out of Mind

You take Stakes is High over 3ft high and rising or De La Soul is Dead? Interesting.

Off the top of my head, I'd have to say:

Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
OK Computer - Radiohead
Zooropa - U2
Midnight Marauders - ATCQ
Endtroducing - DJ Shadow

However, 5 albums is far too few... ;)

Fantastic Planet - Failure
Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Veckatimest - Grizzly Bear
Thriller - Michael Jackson
OK Computer - Radiohead

I also might feel like substituting a collection of Radiohead B-sides (Kid-A era and before) or Dr. Dre "The Chronic."

I'm assuming no compilations or 'Best Of's, so the list would be a little different:

I'd include a Louis Prima and Keely Smith album, but they are mostly compilations.

Stakes is High is their best imo as well. They have better singles on other albums than probably any on SiH, but that's just a damn good album and each track is perfectly placed and sequenced. I couldn't pare down to 5 albums, but I could probably do a couple gigs of mp3s. iPods have spoiled me, I can carry all my essentials in my pocket.

I'll only name my top 3; 4 and on I can't make clear-cut choices, but my top 3 are easy:

1)Dvorak's 9th Symphony (From the New World) by George Szell and the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61ATMQTV12L._SL500_AA240_.jpg

2) Beethoven's 9th Symphony (Choral) by Bernard Haitink and the London Symphony Orchestra
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51PHBPC8KEL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

(I know a lot of people consider Furtwangler the gold standard for the 9th, but the vocals in this version above are mind-blowing and make it my favorite)

3) Racmaninoff's 3rd Concerto by Vladimir Horowitz

It's hard to pick 5 rock albums. If I was picking greatest hits or 5 albums worth of songs it would look a lot different. For now I'll say:

Blue Oyster Cult - Fire of Unknown Origin
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour
The Police - Outlandos D'amour
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin I

I know Wish You Were Here, Fire of Unknown Origin and Magical Mystery Tour would be on any list I make. Trying to pick the others is tough.

Five? Only five?? That's rough. If I absolutely, positively, gun to my head, HAD TO live with only five albums... I'm going with these:

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/5421/sftdqotsa.jpg
http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/9201/rhcpbssm.jpg
http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/6769/revolver.jpg

http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/7234/101e92c008a0a58045e8801.jpg

And I actually think those are pretty fixed/solid. I can think of countless others that I would miss if I had to let them go, but I can't think of anything off the top of my head that would break into that top five.

oh crap

I liked the idea someone had about listing the top 5 in each genre, as this is waay too hard to narrow down

Showcase--Patsy Cline

Moondance--Van Morrison

Disraeli Gears--Cream

The Nightfly--Donald Fagen

Ethiopiques--Mulatu Astatke

The only static entry would be Van Morrison, any other day my picks would include The Pretenders, The James Gang, SRV, Tracy Chapman, Marvin Gaye, Neil Young, Dwight Yoakum, Peter Gabriel, lots of Steely Dan, etc, etc, etc. Hell maybe make it top 100.
