So far, Jack is better...But Tiger will surpass him (stats wise), unfortunately

Jack also had MUCH better competition to play against...So I still think that Jack is better overall

no way that's going to happen. He needs 30 more top 5s.

In majors he will unless he gets injured, and that trumps top 5s any day

He's not even going to catch him in wins, even if he stays healthy. And watching people dump and miss the cut ain't fun. You may enjoy watching non-contenders, but I like to see people on the leaderboard.

Not a big golf fan but I hate when people make arguments like that in others sports (for example Tennis). How can you possibly know that? They are different eras you can't compare them.

Bear vs Tiger Update

Finishes in Majors

Career

Wins; Bear 18, Tiger 14 (does not include 2012 US Open finish)
Top tens; Bear 73, Tiger 35 (does not include 2012 US Open finish)
Made cut; Bear 121, Tiger 58 (includes 2012 US Open)

Through US Open at age 36

Wins; Bear 14, Tiger 14
Top Tens; Bear 46, Tiger 35
Made cut; Bear 60, Tiger 58

Conclusion

Tiger needs to make another 63 cuts in majors to tie Bear, that means almost every cut for the next 16 years until Tiger is 52 years old, highly unlikely.

If Tiger makes the top ten in the US Open this year, he will need another 37 top tens to tie Bear, that means a top ten in almost every major for 10 years until Tiger is 46, almost impossible. Or if Tiger made 3 of 4 cuts each year, it would take another 13 years to catch Bear, very unlikely.

If Tiger wins the US Open, he still needs three more to tie Bear, which is improbable, but possible.

Since Tiger won his last major in 2007, there have been 16 majors, including this year's US Open. Tiger missed 4 to injury and missed the cut twice. He has 6 top ten finishes and looks like he may get another one this year.

Bear continued to make the cut in almost every major through age 52, and made most of the cuts through age 58.

Bear > Tiger

B-) cool

I'll go with the guy who won a US Open on a broken leg.

In tennis specifically, you have to throw that in the argument because just using stats without taking in the conditions/history of the time, they are worthless.

For example, fed has 16GS, which is more than Borg - however, in Borg's time no one bothered playing the Australian open, it was basically a second rate tournament - you have to factor that in. Then there's the fact different tournaments played on different surfaces at different times etc.

Let's compare Jack and Tiger over Tiger's dominant peak years:

Tiger won 14 majors in 12 years: 1997-2008 (first major win to last)

but,

Jack won 13 majors in 12 years: 1963-1975

and,

Tiger had 29 top-10s in those 12 years
Jack had 40 top-10s in those 12 years

???
