Veteran Spanish journalist Ramón Trecet has confirmed in his Twitter the rumors about the strong interest of Real Madrid to sign Manu Ginóbili next season. Argentinian forward, whose contract with San Antonio Spurs is expiring, played for Ettore Messina, now Real Madrid coach, in his stint in Italy with Virtus Bologna.

I won't give much credit to this. It's just speculation from the writer.

Messina has said that he wants players that know his system or similar, Manu is one of them, and sure Real Madrid can offer more than us, but Manu said a thouthen times that he has no interest on going back to europe as he think he is fit for NBA competition for 4 more years.

oh crap

spurs were rumored to make the playoffs this season. and then some. i guess believing floating rumors just doesn't get it done these days.

Well it's always a possibility. Manu said before the season that he wants to stay in the NBA but if he can't be part of a good team he would consider some European teams if they were good. He can go play with his old coach again and he would have plenty of opportunity to play for his NT all he wants :).

Manu will either come back to the Spurs or get paid by another team with cap space that loses out on one of the bigger free agents. He's not going overseas.

The thing is Real Madrid is a REALLY rich club...
They can afford ANY salaries!

It's hard not to give any credits to these rumors...
They can easily give him the same salary than any NBA team... (execpt max contract! lol, but it won't happen)

It's a silly rumor obviously and doesnt mean shit. But some of you are laughing about the possibility and say no way he is going to leave the NBA. Why laughing? Are you so sure he wont?

I think there is a possibility for Manu to go to a team outside of the NBA if he is getting a good offer. Don't be so sure that he's going to stay in the NBA if the Spurs let him go.

Anyway, we don't know. We'll see. And its pretty stupid to speculate now.

RealMadrid are not in the same world/economy than Spain...:lol

For example, a few years bck, they had a 1 billion euro deficit that has be "erased" thanks to the royal familly...
It's conmpletely unfair for the rest of the spanish and european teams, but they will ALWAYS have a way to buy whoever they want to satisfy their fans (socios).
Remember that the preseident of Real madrid is ELECTED after a campain in whitch, by definition, he has to make people DREAM to be the chosen one!

:lol Yeah that was a bit of a shock. So, maybe they still have the funds to spend like crazy.

But from an economic perspective, the Spanish government is pretty much tapped out. And with the Greek economy continuing to be a drag on the EU and the region overall fiscal sense sooner or later must prevail. And with the economic climate in the EU sooner is now. Especially in light of the pressure that the socialist government is under.

I mean...if Tau Ceramica in the Basque Country (an economy that has withstood the latest crisis much better than the rest of Spain) then something must be going on.

But yeah, in terms of team politics there are things I may not be aware of. I just don't see how the fiscal realities support over-spending. *crosses fingers as a Spurs fan*

It will be a big big surprise for me.

Real Madrid is a football club. They aren't going to pay a lot of money in the basketball team.I mean like greek or russian teams. They never did it.Even it was a big rumor that the basketball team could dissapear last time Florentino Perez was the president of the team 10 years ago.

If they have money next year it would be to sign Cesc,Ribery or guys like them

The strongest rumor here in Spain is that they are going to sign Sergio Rodriguez or Rudy Fernandez for the basketball team. It's the first time i see something about Manu.

Ramon Trecet was the spanish Marv albert in the 80's and early 90's

Maybe you're right, but the thing is they are being really humiliated by the Barça and pride is a big factor fot an institution like real madrid...
They are not going to get crazy like in football/"soccer" (I hate that word! :lol) but enough to pay big salary (like a MLE for ex)

I don't want to believe in it, if the spurs FO show Manu some "respect", there is no way he is leaving...
But a short/underpaid deal would make him think twice, and the idea of playing in europe and not for another nba contender is showing some kind of "fidelity" to the spurs and imaginable!!
Don't forget that playing in europe means less games (better healt for international competitions), a good way of living, and a nice salary!! It's a comfortable way of ending your career where you started it!

But let's be optimistic... :lol

I see what you mean...

If I can help you understand the way sport (football and BB) are dealt in europe (and particularly in spain), you have to add the "irrational" factor in your analysis!!!:lol
Real Madrid or Barça are not only "sporting clubs" they are "Institutions", they are kind of "beyong the law"...
The social impact is so important that even the "wisest"/rational people can become irrational (politics, CIO, Bankers...)
That's why, for me, any rumors linked to them have a "realistic" part...

It's the same thing in Italy or England with football ("soccer"), where most of the clubs are spending way more than they earn and are on the verge of bankruptcy! (France and Germany are more "controled"...)

That's why I apreciate the way US sports are working, even if there are referring BS , at least the rules are the same for everybody, to the smartest can have a chance (i.e Spurs)...

Manchester United are the defending chamion, but has an almost 1 billion debt!, while Arsenal spends LESS than what they earn...

I'm telling you there is a BIG irrational factor in all of this, it's just nonsense!! :lol

RM does have a crazy budget, but some of it pays off for them; they supposedly recovered those 100M euros they spent on cristiano ronaldo within a year from jersey sales alone.

all that said, I think the only reason Manu would leave the NBA is if he is being offered a role player role on a losing team. Anything else (important role on losing team, lesser role on winning team) and I think he stays, regardless of money.

Nonsense. It works exactly the same way. Real was bailed out by public money, with the city paying for their training complex the same way NBA teams have cities funding their arenas with public money.

I completely disagree with the use of public money to fund sports (or banks, or car makers, or any other industry, or health-care) but it happens in Europe and the US alike. The only difference between the NBA and, say, the ACB is the existence of a salary cap. But what's the difference when it come to the MLB, which is also an American league? What's the differnece between the Giants and Real Madrid? None whatsoever.

This info is legit. Real and Perez are still traumatized by the impact in terms of public attention and success in terms of results that Rubio's transfer for Barcelona has been. They'll try to be the ones signing a Rubio next Summer at all costs. Manu will be their priority, then Rudy Fernandez, then Splitter and I think they'll eventually settle on Sergio Rodriguez, Rasho and some guy like Siskauskas.

ps - The source isn't Hoopsworld. They're just republishing the rumour that has been going on for awhile. If there's a NBA star who I can see moving out of the NBA and playing for Messina in Madrid is precisely Manu. I just don't think it's this season. If his contract lasted 1 more year, than yeah, I could totally see that happening. Finally, Tau Ceramica isn't in the Basque Country; it's in Castellón de la Plana which is nowhere near the Basque Country.

I wouldn't blame Manu if we went to Madrid. I've lived in Spain and spent a ton of time in Madrid, which is an amazing city. Any Real Madrid athlete is the king of the town, like the Lakers in Los Angeles. It's a pretty awesome life.

I'm sure Messina doesn't play smallball, so his team would have a legit chance of winning a title. Popovich, on the other hand, has lost his mind. He's no party to play for anyway, si I'm sure it has to be getting very old for Manu.

Either Manu gets a contract on a potential winner (Cleveland or NYC if they sign James), or he is moving out of the NBA.

I'm sure Messina doesn't play smallball

Of course he does. Every successful coach these days plays "small-ball".

In fact, we should get ready to stop using that term as something that designs an unusual type of line-up. Small-ball will be the norm in the near future. We should start using the expression "Tall-ball" (or an equivalent) to designate a special kind of line-up when a coach gets creative and plays 2 big post players or even 2 posts and a very long forward.

Portland will trade Rodriguez if it comes to that, they won't allow him to walk away for nothing.

Messina wants Rasho. They'll try to dump VDS and Lavrinovic and sign Rasho and another big man. I've even head that Reyes may leave for Baskonia. Although that would put them short on cupos, so it doesnt' seem very reliable.
