That's probably what most tea baggers think.

Too bad it's not even a relatively accurate description of National Socialist (NAZI) Germany.

"UPS and FedEx are doing just fine. It's the Post Office that's always having problems.” -- Barack Obama, Aug. 11, 2009.

Oh, by the way Social Security and Medicare say hello.

"UPS and FedEx are doing just fine"

they wouldn't be if they were mandated to carry all the letters and shit that USPS delivers.

or were restricted from having their rates reflect actual costs.

How is the USPS restricted from having it's rates reflect actual costs?

I thought the Postal Accountability and Enhancement
Act (PAEA) of 2006 largely removed those. Could be wrong...

I'm gonna have to use teh google.

Contrarian arugements are not a substitute for deductive reasoning. I don't know why the price of a first class post is not $5.00.

The arguement could be made that postal rates are below market pricing because prior to 1980 or so, the USPS had it's infrastructure paid by the federal budget. True costs might not be revealed as easily as by FedEx or UPS.
BTW, I'm a fan of USPS. I use them almost exclusively.

I'm gonna have to use teh google.2011 price increase. In addition to changing the structure of how some products are priced, the USPS plans to pursue “a moderate exigent price increase” effective in 2011. Such an increase could go beyond the Consumer Price Index, which has been used to cap price changes on market dominant products since 2007.

So they've been tied to the CPI? I'm surprised they're still (relatively) solvent.:wow Looks like pension funding is biting them in the ass right now.

I'm surprised they're still (relatively) solvent.:wow Looks like pension funding is biting them in the ass right now.Yeah, and the current losses are post slash and burn cuts the past couple of years. I'm sure there could be some study about how super-CPI raises could affect use and revenues, but it seems logical to give them that tool at this time.

They cannot raise the price of postage without congressional approval.

To my knowledge, the part of it that affected postage rates makes it harder for the postal service to raise the rates as much as needed. I think the primary effect is that the Postal service is not only paying for retirement in real time, but now have to pay up front for future retirees to the government system, effectively paying double retirement. Congress can just steal more of their money. Think congress will ever give that money back as current workers retire? I think not, that they will tell the postal service it still comes from their revenues.

The postal service actually works well when congress leaves it alone.

All what mail?

All I get anymore is junk mail and advertisements.

Anything of importance, I receive electronically or it is sent UPS or FEDEX.
