Yeah, I just bought a hero, and saw this the other day. Damn, it looks smooth. I am still happy with my purchase, but HTC thought of everything with this phone. We could actually use it in San Antonio too since we are one of the 27 cities with 4g. I think that the phone should run all conversation through 4g, rather than cellular. I know that there is at least one phone company moving that way (one of the minor players, can't remember their name though).

I've had a couple of HTC phones in the past years.
Touch HD
Touch HD2
Magic
The first two have magnificent hardware, big displays, gorgeous design but the biggest mistake is windows mobile. Don't get me wrong... WM is nice to use and you can get a lot of apps and modifications for free but the speed is just awful. Until Windows Mobile 7 comes out it's a no-go. Also there are many hardware errors due to overheating on the two devices - First try to create a superphone and they failed.
The Magic is a great Android based phone but lacks the hardware and display size to be considered anything near a superphone.
Right now the phone to get is the HTC Legend - Case made of one piece - Android - smooth - great hardware and design. Easy to customize. If you don't like the Sene UI just turn it off.
The Evo seems to me as the successor to the Legend. Time will tell which one is worth getting. And time will tell if HTC has learned from the mistakes they made in the past.
Still, if you are one who does not like to get an iphone, the newest htc phones legend and evo are the best alternative. Hell, I'd even say they are better then the Iphone due to the fact that you can customize nearly everything to your liking. The only thing Apple will always be better in is the usability of the UI.

Depends. HTC phones have historically been priced very competitively. If it's under, say, $300 I'm definitely getting it.

Why would it be that much more expensive? This phone doesn't have specs that are extremely overpowered, compared to other phones that are selling quite cheaply right now.

Yes it is, almost every spec is doubled on this phone. The only thing that is "common" on this phone is the Snapdragon, and that has only been used in about 4 other phones. Yeah, I bet this phone is 500+.

thats if your area has 4g, right now san antonio does but alot of major cities dont, like LA.

This may be true, but Clearwire is expanding into a lot more cities this year, and will be covering almost half of the population. Until that happens, you would be able to use this phone with 3g.

The HTC EVO 4G will go on sale June 4th for $199 with a new contract according to Engadget.com (http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/sprint-selling-htc-evo-4g-on-june-4-for-199/)
Awesome price for the handset, but the monthly contract has a (seemingly mandatory) 4G 'Premium data' add-on for $10 monthly. And an optional $29.99 monthly for the 8-device wi-fi hotspot feature.
Still getting on this shit, though. ASAP!

The few limited 4G spots are not TRUE 4G, we won't see the true 4g capabilities for at least another year. A LOT of upgrades are in order to make this happen soon but the technology isn't quite there yet to match all the hype.

The technology is very similar to what's in computers. They both use processors, RAM, storage is even nearly identical. I'm not sure you can say it's in it's infancy when it's already so robust. The Evo 4G will run as smoothly or better than many Netbooks.

Define "true 4G" for me? Because this is a huge step up from 3G, so in my book, that's 4G. Look at the speed tests Engadget conducted:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/sprints-htc-evo-4g-put-through-its-bandwidth-sucking-paces/
Does that look even remotely similar to 3G to you? Four MEG/sec down, 1 mb/sec up speeds? So yeah, you can bandy about the "not true 4G" all you want. It's still insanely fast, faster than anything else you can achieve in a phone in the United States by a wide margin.
Some features of the Evo:
* Simultaneous voice and data capability in 4G and Wi-Fi coverage areas, enabling Web surfing and more while the conversation continues.
* Offering a new way to search with pictures instead of words, Google Goggles(TM) works with everything from books, DVDs and barcodes to landmarks, logos, artwork and wine labels.
* Superfast 1GHz Qualcomm(R) Snapdragon(TM) processor, ensuring a smooth and quick movement within phone menus.
* Two cameras - an 8.0 megapixel auto-focus camera with HD-capable video camcorder and a forward-facing 1.3 megapixel camera.
* Built-in mobile hotspot functionality allowing up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices to share the 3G or 4G experience on the go with a laptop, camera, music player, game unit, video player, or any other Wi-Fi enabled device.
* Integrated HD video capture with the ability to capture and share live video via the Qik Web site, Facebook, YouTube or Twitter(TM).
* Ability to easily watch video with the device on an HDTV via an HDMI cable (sold separately).
* Custom Web browser optimized for the 4.3 inch display and Sprint 4G speeds to deliver a full, no-compromise Internet experience.
* A handy kickstand built into the back, making it easy to watch videos on-the-go.
* Adobe Flash technology ensures that rich Internet content, such as embedded video and animation, are displayed the way they are meant to be seen.
* Pinch-to-zoom and automatic text reflowing provide easy Web page views.
Sprint has also stated that you will be able to have real-time video chat via the 3G or 4G connection.

It's purported to have better battery life than the first iPhone. My guess is that with intensive use, it will last just over a day.

Just to encourage some friendly enlightenment on the Sprint 4G system, I felt I should humbly chime in about this subject. Although I like Sprint as a company and a provider of services, this recent marketing push for 4G is somewhat of a falsehood. To be point blank, 4G is not simply a proliferation of 3G technology. For more clarity: 4G will encompass fast download rates, but fast download rates are not solely 4G. Currently the ITU has not defined 4G. The International Telecommunication Union sets the basic standards, policies, and definitions for the telecommunication industry. It has been years in the making that everyone is waiting for them to “somewhat” define 4G, but they really have not. The reason being, it is very complex. Without getting into specific details here is a basic ideology of it: most industry leaders look for 4G to be a ubiquitous network. A network that will probably engulf open wireless architecture and smart phones that can detect, authorize, register, and connect onto any network. It’s a user centric philosophy that goes far beyond one single carrier. As such, many companies (with different technologies) have to have some accord on basic functionality for it to really prosper. At the moment, there are three components that most experts concur will drive 4G. The network will use orthogonal multiplexing, MIMO antennas, and be IP based. Although Verizon has LTE and Sprint has WiMAX and both share these basic functions….there is a slew of processes that are still up for debate. As such, Sprint is quick to advertise this is 4G ( since they have these three items). Although these will be components of 4G…it is not holistically 4G. If you were statically looking at a pie, it would only account for 30% of 4G. The remaining 70% is the real challenging aspect of 4G that has not been addressed. Items such as horizontal handoff, latency issues, package losses, billing accountability, security schemes, and overall QoS are still complicated issues that need to be addressed. Again, 4G is not simply just a proliferation of 3G, but candidly a whole new evolution that will require inter-carrier uniformity (on some levels) and common processing features. It’s quite complicated and that’s the reason it’s not out yet. Verizon has similar speeds “4G rates using LTE around the country”, but notice they not advertising it. They call it 3GPP. The industry has been working on 4G for close to a decade, but really has not reached a final decision on how exactly the system/network will work.
Sprint very well offers (in certain areas) rates that are faster than traditional 3G…..but that does not translate into 4G.
Thanks for reading. :p:

IMHO this technology is nowhere near where it will be in the near future. Just because the phone has all the parts of any other computer doesn't make it a mature technology. Even dumb phones have CPUs, memory, and almost any other part that would be in any desktop computer. Just less sophisticated.
Hand held devices still have serious issues with processing power, battery life, and functionality, in that I am not sure we understand just what these mobile devices are truly capable of yet. I don't think we have even discovered all the uses these devices will do 5 years from now (assuming creativity is not stifled by lack of proper competition).
I think we are 3 or 4 generations away from a truly complete smartphone system, from fair pricing and market penetration, to functionality.

I thought I was pretty explicit, but I will recap:
Battery life: These devices are nothing without their electricity. Battery technology is at a virtual stand-still when compared to processor technology. That isn't to say that there aren't creative ways of getting around this: Smaller CPU manufacturing processes, dynamic power use, and more efficient programming and programming languages can minimize power use and get the most out of a battery, but you are still limited by physics. Batteries are over 50% of the weight of these devices and have limitations on number of recharge cycles and plain milliampereage available. Only being able to do what I want on a given device for but a few hours without a recharge just limits the experience and the functionality.
Processing Power: These devices are spectacular compared to PDAs of yore: Gigahertz processors, gigabytes of memory, but the reality is, compared to the software available, it seems these things are still quite underpowered. The ability to actually do any sort of hard core processing isn't available. Some devices are just starting to allow for factory recommended multitasking. (Yeah, I know about jailbreaking, but why do I have to void my warranty just to be able to multitask?)
Software: The app store from Apple and Google are great. They have expanded the functionality of the PDA-Phone by quite a bit. But to say all the great ideas/software is already out there, is a bit arrogant and premature. I think that the software is the most mature part of the current smartphone, but I have no doubt the next 5 years will see some killer apps that will push the smartphone from the realm of luxury item and time saver to absolute necessity for everyone, not just for those with a budget. Which brings me to my next point.
Connectivity: While AT&T and Verizon are battling it out on the ad wars, only Sprint right now has 4g, and only in certain places. Who cares? Well, the fact is, despite there being a de facto 3 companies in the race (maybe 1 or 2 more) the prices are still to high for the average consumer, not so much for the device itself as for the data-plan. This wouldn't even be such an issue, if all 3 carriers weren't bottlecapping the amount you could download to 5 gigs! The only exception to this ridiculously low limit (in the age of Youtube and Skype) is Sprint's 4G network, which is truly unlimited, when you get get the 4G in the 1st place. I see a world, in the future, where most of these devices will not only replace our landlines for phone service, as they have, but will also serve as viable alternatives to other broadband internet sources, like Comcast, Time Warner, and AT&T DSL. It can happen, and create more competition, and more functionality to us users (wireless data wherever a cell tower is). But it isn't here yet, and because of the lack of true competition between carriers (except from the bastard child Sprint) I don't know if we will get what we want for a few more years.
Interoperability: Blackberry has good business apps, but is still lagging in general application use, and doesn't have anything even close to the Droid store, let alone the iPhone store. iPhones don't have the call quality or the internetworkability (CDMA vs GMA vs IDEN etc) that Blackberry and Android does, and Android is still playing catch-up with Apple's App store. A device that can more robustly deliver to all market segments is a few generations away IMHO.
Call Quality: The fact is, these devices, as released now, are PDA 1st, phone 2nd. That is fine for some of us, but for people like myself, and most of the people I deal with, good old fashioned call quality is still very important. Dropped calls, bad speakers/microphones, and cumbersome Bluetooth style connections are just not where they should be on these phones. If I have to carry a second phone around just so that I can listen to them and understand them, than I think there is a real problem. The whole idea of consolidating a media player with a PDA with a phone is so that I only have less things to carry.
Durability: This is actually better than I had expected, but still isn't where it could be for full market penetration. Only Panasonic toughbook stuff is truly robust enough for many uses, like construction and hospital use. That isn't to say everyone needs that kind of durability, but for some level of convergence of this kind of durability mentality might be a few generations away.
In conclusion, while the smartphone revolution is nice, and it has made great strides, it is still not in its glory days, let alone golden years. I can see it maturing in a few years, unless the market takes a major shakeup, but IMHO it is not a mature technology, not by a long shot. I find it amusing that some people seem to think we have reached the pinnacle of the technology, particularly since the US has always lagged every other industrialized country as far as mobile technology (see Korea and Japan, and pretty much all of Europe) when we are not even up to other countries' standards in terms of the complete smartphone experience.

I'll rebut you as I feel able to do so.
Only being able to do what I want on a given device for but a few hours without a recharge just limits the experience and the functionality.
Okay, this is a point against the iPhone. The thing sucked battery down. But even so, I was usually able to get through a whole day without having to recharge it. What's the problem with having to plug it in every night? Not that big of an issue, especially when you can pack a small power cord along with you for extended trips.
The Evo 4G is purported to have even better battery life. I guess I don't see what the big deal is when people want phones that last 5 days or 2 weeks on one charge, considering it takes 5 seconds to plug it in before I sleep every night.
Excusing the fact that I'm a gamer -- how many applications that computers are running in this era require or even recommend dual or quad-core processors? Okay, so you can't run Adobe Photoshop on a phone... why would you want to? It doesn't seem like a situation I would ever come across. Many programs are actually being built lighter these days to allow for generalization across mobile platforms. The Android and Apple OS built into their respective phones are a sterling example of how capable modern devices have become. You can do almost anything on a good smartphone now that you can on a computer, and the Evo 4G is more powerful than the top of the line gaming desktop I bought in 2000. That says a lot about the tech, to say nothing of a phone's ability to record video (and now have video calls), take photos, run SSH, patch into a mainframe computer, etc.
In 5-10 years, we will look at the very best, most powerful desktops of the day as severely underpowered, so again, I think you're applying something that's true for all technology to cell phones exclusively.
Software: The app store from Apple and Google are great. They have expanded the functionality of the PDA-Phone by quite a bit. But to say all the great ideas/software is already out there, is a bit arrogant and premature.
Who ever said that? And who ever said this about ANY sector of software, or even engineering? I expect to see massive changes in the next 3-4 years with almost all computers as far as the interactive UI goes, so again, to apply this to phones alone is highly puzzling to me.
I think that the software is the most mature part of the current smartphone, but I have no doubt the next 5 years will see some killer apps that will push the smartphone from the realm of luxury item
Considering that probably half of the cell phones sold in America today are smart phones, I would have to disagree that they are a luxury item. Everyone is using them, and in many places they are replacing laptops.
and time saver to absolute necessity for everyone, not just for those with a budget. Which brings me to my next point.
I don't see why something that hasn't been embraced fully by the public means that it's an infant technology.
What? I've downloaded well over 5 gigs in one month via my iPhone and was never penalized or charged on my phone bill. There is absolutely NO way Sprint will cap a 4G service at 5 gigs while advertising the ability to download HD video. It's just not going to happen, and I find the fact that you list this as such an "accepted" fact highly dubious. I have also heard nothing from people with Droids indicating a bandwidth cap.
It's an interesting thought that you list the ability to take your phone anywhere for an internet signal and at the same time criticize them for being unable to handle the multi-tasking power demanded by today's computer users. If the cell phones cannot perform as you feel they should, why should companies implement vastly expensive technology to feed them data at rates they cannot support?
Interoperability: Blackberry has good business apps, but is still lagging in general application use, and doesn't have anything even close to the Droid store, let alone the iPhone store.
Have you noticed the screen size on a Blackberry? There's a reason it's more limited to businesses. Apple designed the app store to be massively accessible -- something RIM completely missed the boat on.
iPhones don't have the call quality or the internetworkability (CDMA vs GMA vs IDEN etc) that Blackberry and Android does, and Android is still playing catch-up with Apple's App store. A device that can more robustly deliver to all market segments is a few generations away IMHO.
This is another example where the technology in 5 years will blow anything we presently see away, and another 5 years after that will be the same thing. There is no magical line that you seem to be suggesting that separates "advanced" from "rudimentary", because all technology becomes laughably inadequate in the lens of time.
These issues are totally not unique to smartphones, and have more to do with poor carrier service than lacking technology, IMO.
First you talk about the market in general, now you're highly specializing the device toward particular individuals. It honestly seems like you're grasping for straws to be critical of. I don't need my phone to be rugged, because I don't treat it like crap, and I don't plan to drop it over a waterfall anytime soon. You say that smartphones haven't proliferated the market enough -- well, regular cell phones are by NO means tanks, and they seem to be popular enough without the added all-weather protection.
In conclusion, while the smartphone revolution is nice, and it has made great strides, it is still not in its glory days, let alone golden years. I can see it maturing in a few years, unless the market takes a major shakeup, but IMHO it is not a mature technology, not by a long shot.
Have we had a glory age of technology yet? Yes, we're in the information age, but it's been going on as long as the internet has been widely accepted as a data-transfer medium for the average person, and it doesn't seem to be ending anytime soon. Cell phones and smart phones are just a further extension of that.
Who in their right mind has said we've hit the pinnacle of technology? I'm really curious as to where you're pulling some of these ideas from. Technology improves upon itself improves upon itself improves upon itself. Until we hit a major road block, limited by resources, why would there ever be a conceivable "peak" of technology? It's not going to suddenly start devolving tomorrow. Barring some kind of historical disaster, man-made or otherwise, we aren't going to wake up in 15 years and pine for the days when we had "gigs of RAM" and "terabytes of hard drive". Those terms might be so surpassed in 15 years that they aren't even in the common computer vernacular anymore.
Suffice to say, I find your view on this subject extremely confounding.

I thought I was pretty explicit, but I will recap:
So, in a nutshell, you basically are saying that you won't buy one now because there will be better ones later down the road...
Which is kinda silly, considering that applies to pretty much everything in tech.
I understand people that don't want to be 'early adopters', but smartphones are well into their 3rd or 4th gen already.
Now, if you don't like any of the offerings then that's pretty understandable. But at a current cell contract going for about 2 years, and being that you can get fairly cheap prices on these devices with a new contract, I don't really see the rationale for not taking one out for a spin.
I can tell you that my iPhone really changed the way I use phones. I'm sure there will be better things down the road. I already expect to retire it this year when Apple announces their new unit in about two months and I'm due for renewing my contract. If you do your homework and also keep in mind what the longevity of these toys are, then there's really nothing to hesitate about.

I don't understand why someone would bring up the 4th gen Iphone in this conversation. Its specs dont sniff the jock of the Evo's. I mean, it doesn't even have 4g connectivity.
Also, what is At&t's marketing campaign going to rely on when this phone comes out? Talk/surf will no longer be exclusively theirs.

It will probably look a lot like VZW campaign's against AT&T. I assume WiMax coverage will be pretty limited for a while. Things are going to get a lot more interesting in about a year when Verizon finally rolls out their LTE network.

This has already been discussed. 4G is obviously not available in every major city yet. But if it IS in your area, it's a big step up compared to 3G.
At least with the Evo you get the OPTION of 4G, and Sprint will be expanding it to roughly 15 major cities in the US by the end of 2010. The iPhone doesn't even have the option of 4G, or at least nothing has been announced.

Just posting review links, but the only consistent comment about 4G is how spotty it is in every area it's supposed to cover:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/19/htc-evo-4g-review/
Of course, the EVO's 4G access isn't just about the Hotspot app (though that's arguably its single most valuable function). The phone's WiMAX radio can be controlled independently of the CDMA / EV-DO, Bluetooth, and WiFi radios -- which will certainly be a boon for customers in 3G-only markets and for anyone looking to max out battery life -- but we tested the EVO in Chicago, where Sprint's (and Clearwire's) 4G signal is alive and well.
When we got a signal, it was amazing. Hell, it was straight-up epic -- full, desktop-caliber websites and apps like the Market loaded with honest-to-goodness WiFi-like speed, and we were able to make calls over CDMA at the same time (this was a feature that Sprint said was on the bubble back at CTIA, so we're happy to see it made it in). Of course, we imagine this is partially a function of the fact that Sprint's 4G network is practically a ghost town; Clearwire's most recent quarterly report clocked less than a million subscribers nationally, and we're sure we'll see some performance degradation as insanely hot hardware like the EVO starts infiltrating Sprint stores and power users get hip to the knowledge that WiMAX is the bee's knees.
The other issue we had was... well, put simply, staying covered. Chicago is an urban canyon in every sense of the word, and Clearwire operates in a high spectrum slot that doesn't share the building penetration characteristics of 700 and 850MHz networks. In other words, we found ourselves getting four bars of 4G walking down the street, then ducking into a coffee shop and dropping to just one or even no bars at all.
That said, this is truly one of the best smartphones ever made, and even spotty 4G -- a reality of a young technology that's going to take years to properly build out -- probably won't do much to hamper your enjoyment of this thing. It's reasonable to assume that phones like the EVO will ultimately come to every carrier over the next few months... but hey, if you jumped ship for Sprint to pick up this monster, we wouldn't be able to blame you.

Price comparison:
Sprint - text + web + phone = $70 + 10 Evo 4G fee = $80 + 30 for Mifi = $110.
AT&T - Web + phone = $70 + 20 for texting = $90 + $30 tethering = $120.
So AT&T is actually $10 more expensive, and you don't get the 4G service with it.

Advanced Task Killer - must have
Alarm Clock plus - For alarms in the morning
Aldiko - Free books!
Alice - It's a cool program that checks artists on your phone and alerts you to upcoming concerts near you that the artists are playing in.
Barcode Scanner - Scan a code and you can look up reviews of the product.
Battery Status Pro/BatteryTime Lite - Not sure which I like more. Shows you how much battery time you have left.
Boondocks - Comic
Calvin & Hobbes - Comic
Chess
Digg - I'm a huge fan of digg so this native app is sweet
Dolphin Browser HD - Tabbed, gesture-based browsing. Pretty cool.
Google Earth
EasyTether - Full version is only $10. I haven't tested this yet though.
eBay
Evernote - Best note taking program for Android
Facebook
Google Sky Map - Gives you a star chart for each night. Awesome for an amateur astronomer.
Layar - Kind of like Google Goggles. I haven't tried this much yet though.
LED Light - Awesome, allows you to use the super bright LED as a flashlight.
LogMeIn - Probably the coolest app I have. Allows you to quickly and easily take complete control of your computer from the phone. Very easy to use and very reliable, too.
Meebo IM - For IMing through Gchat/AIM/MSN/Facebook
Nesoid - Nintendo games on your phone. Works EXTREMELY well. I already have a ton of NES games on the Evo.
NPR News
Pandora
Peanuts
Skyfire - Browser that works really well with many flash based websites.
ShootMe - Allows you to take quick, easy screenshots. Does NOT require rooting the device for the Evo.
Substrate - Really sweet live wallpapers.
Weatherbug - The best program I've used thus far for weather.
Where's my Droid - Allows you to send a text to the phone which will send a message back to the sender with the location of the phone, or just ring it for 30-60 seconds.
World War - Game. Haven't played it yet.
XKCD Viewer - Comic
That's it for now. :lol
I have done a lot of customizing with the 7 home screens as well.
My main home screen has nothing on it except 4 icons across the bottom - Messages, Gmail, Internet (standard browser), and Camera.
My upper left screen is weather. My left screen is a slew of widgets. Wifi, 4G, Bluetooth, and GPS across the bottom, LED Light on top. Across the middle I have a friendstream widget linked to Facebook, which is pretty impressive.
Lower left are my bookmarks.
Lower right is my most common apps. Camcorder, Digg, Dolphin HD, Facebook, Maps, Market, Meebo, Music, Nesoid, NPR News, Pandora, Shazam, Talk, Weatherbug, and Youtube.
Right home screen are my favorites, people I talk/text to the most often.
Top right is for texting, but I'll probably change that soon to something a little more useful/less redundant.

Well, I've made a change to my Evo.
I've downloaded SWYPE technology and am using it now as my primary method of input.
It's absolutely phenomenal. I'm not sure if it's actually faster than standard typing with a touchscreen, but I think it has the potential to be far faster.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=687056
Here's the link I used. You have to sign up to get the download but it's completely free.
For those of you that don't know, Swype is a keyboard for touchscreen phones that's completely free of the need to press and depress letters. You literally move your finger to the letters in a word, and Swype intelligently discovers which word you wanted to be write, and then displays it.
It's pretty damned impressive. I'm a total rookie with Swype and I'm probably already approaching my typing speed with a standard touchscreen keyboard. It's absolutely ridiculous, and looks cool as hell.

Well you only have one more day to wait for the best phone on the market! :ihit
I'd be talking to Best Buy about giving me some SERIOUS discounts on that phone for the hassle. Maybe like $50 off or a free case or something. Depending on the store manager, if you make enough noise they'll usually acquiesce and give you something cool.

I can almost guarantee you that it will. There is really no difference between android operating stasystems, especially between two htc phones. Give it a shot. Shouldnt take more than 5 minutes to download and install on your phone. Just be sure to follow the instructions they give you on the site.

Oooo, I see Kori peering in on the thread. Might she be getting an Evo? :lol
Anyway, made a big change to my homescreen layout today. I downloaded the ADW Launcher. I believe it's for devices that are 2.1 and later. A "launcher" is exactly what HTC Sense is -- it's the interface by which your phone operates and moves through different windows and screens when you hit the "home" button.
The ADW is pretty spiffy, and I'm just cutting my teeth on it. The coolest thing is that it allows you to view your home screens in landscape mode -- which is far better than the stock HTC Sense, which forces portrait mode all the time.
Anyway, here's what my home screen looks like now:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/whisperingstorm/ADWLauncherHome.jpg
This is with Beautiful Widgets, which does cost money, but I think it's definitely worth it, especially since PDW disables the HTC weather widget. Worth the trade-off in my book, there are literally thousands of skins for the beautiful widget app.
And my toggle screen (for turning on and off services)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/whisperingstorm/ADWLauncherIcons.jpg
The icons on the right here are through a draggable dock that operates similarly to the notification toolbar -- it normally displays the two programs you want to set to the home bar, and then if you grab it and drag up (or to the side here), it reveals space for up to 6 programs that you can throw in there as hidden shortcuts.

I don't get this. The evo fits fine in any pair of pants, slacks, or shorts I own. The dimensional differences between it and the iphone are almost negligible. I can't picture someone liking thee size of the iphone but then having a problem with the evo. It's barely noticeable in my pocket at the worst. I suppose if you wear pants that are painted on your legs, then I could see some problems. Otherwise, I seriously don't understand the criticism. It sounds like a lot of people are grasping for straws for reasons to criticize this device.

That I don't get. It's a big fucking phone, your argument should be that yeah it's a big fucking phone because it has a big fucking screen, and that's alright with me. Then it becomes a matter of personal preference. I owned a RAZR before I owned an iPhone, and I hate to carry shit in my pockets (I don't even carry a wallet, I carry a business card holder that's a lot thinner than a wallet) so for me the iPhone 4 being the thinnest smartphone on the planet is good news, but again personal preference.

Couldn't agree more. Personally, the iPhone was already quite bulky, so a thinner version is certainly welcome, and if they somehow can reduce the top and bottom footprint later on, I'll take it too.
This is no knock on the EVO or any of the newer/bigger phones. It's really a matter of preference.

I guess I just find it odd that so many people are carrying netbooks or full laptops and yet this phone is considered large? It's definitely a larger phone but nothing compared to what many people are lugging around. I mean, is an inch really that much of a difference in most front pockets?

Yes it's considered large by phone standards. Of course you can't compare it to a laptop or a netbook, especially considering they have different uses.

You're missing the point. It might be convenient to those who want to carry a netbook or laptop around (same thing with the iPhone, really). But for those wanting to carry just a cellphone, it's a bulky device.

And that's what's also awesome about the iPhone, and that's why you compare them to each other, not to netbooks. You can't compare your device to a device with a 7-10 inch screen, large hard drives, nearly full sized keyboards, etc.

Why not? Like I said, I can do almost as much on my phone as I can on a computer. Keep in mind that at one time in history, it would have been ludicrous to compare a laptop to a desktop. Now they are essentially small replica of their larger brethren, and can quite easily be compared. The EVO has very similar specs compared to my first netbook. Processor, RAM, storage are all nearly identical. And for me, the screen is more than adequate for most internet viewing on the go.
I'll put it to you this way... now that I've got this phone I see absolutely no reason to ever bring my netbook with me again. To me, if a device is replacing another device, then they can be compared, at least in some respects.

I just love the phone. I think it's phenomenal. It's basically alleviated my need of purchasing a new laptop in the near future, so I'm going to save up for a better system for gaming. The screen is just large enough to make web-browsing not feel incredibly cramped.

The Evo would fit into any pair of pants I have too. The problem is, I do a lot of walking, lifting, pulling and pushing at my job. Therefore, the bigger the phone, the more noticeable it becomes. I have a Sony Ericsson Walkman phone that's small enough to fit into the condom pocket in my jeans. It's the perfect size for work, but doesn't possess some of the tools I need. I use it every now and then on my busier days at work.
The Evo would just get in my way and I'd be too afraid of breaking it to actually take it to work. The iPhone is just a bit smaller, small enough for me to not notice it a good amount of the time.
The reason I know this to be true is because the phone I use is 95% of the time is similar in size to the iPhone and I don't have too many problems with it. I compared my friends Evo to it, and the size difference is enough to be a problem for me.
I guess it depends what you do at your job too that can make the difference. If you have an office job where you sit a majority of the time, then I can see how it wouldn't be a problem. But if you're working a job that calls for a lot of walking and moving, the more you have in your pockets, the bigger the distraction.

My Evo has a very slight issue with the bottom of the screen raising up. But it's not getting worse from what I can tell, and is barely, and I mean barely noticeable.
If it worsens, I'll be contacting Sprint or Best Buy to get it fixed.
Fortunately, HTC made the Evo with a replacable screen, so it shouldn't be too big of an issue. Heck, it might just need to be re-adhesived.
Still no serious complaints about this phone, though obviously I'll be less than thrilled if repairs are needed. But as of now, it rocks!

There are levels of replaceability. As far as I know, the screen in the iPhones have literally been enclosed in the casing. Pulling it off means jerking the guts of the phone out.
From what I read, the Evo's screen is independent of the internal components and may even be user-swappable.
Also, I thought the task killer helped battery life because you were able to kill tasks that were draining the battery?
Well, it does to a point. But it also chugs the processor to force close so many apps, as many of them are set to just cache in the background -- where they don't use much battery or processor. I was using it far too judiciously, and all the forcing closed of programs which would later reopen were really destroying my battery life, not to mention leaving it open meant it was essentially like having a task manager left open on a phone that constantly monitors everything. Now if I use it, I let it kill itself as well.
With moderate usage today, it's been unplugged for 7 hours exactly now, and I still have 68% battery. I'm fairly certain I could go for 24+ hours without recharging, even with moderate use. Pretty awesome. Disabling most of my live updates helped as well. The battery life went from "OK" to "excellent" in literally one day.

I have a motorola backflip, and I had a similar issue with it seeming to drain a lot of my battery. But what I did was turn Auto Kill on, and have it set to "crazy" and to work every time my screen turns off. then I set the security level to "low" and i put any apps that are constantly in use by my phone on the ignore list. this has actually helped my battery life significantly, and helps keep lots of memory available. so now i almost never have to even use the app manually. i have friend who has an Evo, and i did the same thing for him, and he said it made a big difference as well.

What service do you have now?
I pay $79.99 a month for EVERYTHING from Sprint (including unlimited mobile to mobile minutes, which is excellent). I think SA is one of the cities next on the list to switch over to 4G, also.

I'm not in SA any longer. I have one of the data everything plans but now I'm in Santa Fe, NM and there isn't any 4G coverage in the state. I commute to ABQ several times a week but the train, buses, and university all have wifi coverage so my laptop works fine.
Its the actual phone cost that would kill me. I just upgraded a few months back so I would have to pay full price for the Evo.

Well, you could always sell that phone on eBay and use the cash from it to cut down on the Evo's cost a bit. Just an idea.

I'll have to use the same analogy I've used before: It's like having a Lamborghini and living in a city where every road is only 50 feet long. Doesn't matter how fast your car is if there isn't enough road to actually go fast.
Doesn't matter how fast Verizons 4G service is if I can't use it to do anything without going over some arbitrary limit.
It's too bad, this type of limitation will stiffle innovation and lead to reduced quality video and audio services. Instead of being able to stream that game in the best quality your phones screen can support, or streaming high quality music, or video calling, you'll be watching blocky vidoes, hollow sounding music, and no video calling.
It's unfortunate that the technology is there to do such amazing things, but other things are keeping it from happening.
It's one of those tricky things too that once one company does it all of the others feel more comfortable doing it as well, hopefully someone will be smart enough not to and be the alternative for the people that don't want to put up with such bullshit.

If you have Sprint, get the Evo. The decision is really that simple. But since the iPhone is king in the cool phone department, everyone has to take their shots.

Really? LOL you are going to use Budweiser (or InBev) for comparison to apple. Even I don't have that much disdain for the apple culture. Oh and notice I say culture because I think that they have some great products for the people in their market, some of these products may be useless, but they are at least geared well toward their niche. I won't elaborate on that niche, because it will sound demeaning when I don't mean to.
It is the culture surrounding everything apple (up to and including steve jobs), that causes the backlash, not the perceived "king" status.

What the hell are you talking about?
So let me guess: You watch TV on a 13 inch screen in your living room, right?
You're still using this for your home PC, right?
http://www.torontocaralarm.com/upfile/573/file/small_2009826204154S900HXjpg.jpg
And I'll bet the first time you got an iPod Video/iPod Touch, you said, "Wow, this is great... if only they can make the screen smaller, it would be so much better!"
Your argument is equally hilarious because when the iPhone was released, it had the largest display available in the American market. Were you banging the "compensation" drum then, too?
Bigger might not be always better, but in the case of the Evo, it is. It's got a higher resolution than any of the previous iPhones, it has a fantastic touchscreen with haptic feedback, great colors, and is massively bright. There's a reason magazines have raved about the ability to watch movies on it enjoyably. If big screens weren't nice to have, you wouldn't see plasma/LED TVs, you wouldn't see the Nintendo DS consistently getting remade with a larger screen, etc.
But no, the MOST hilarious thing about your comment is the "phone" portion. Because the "phone" aspect of the iPhone has been the part that it has most been criticized for, since apparently the iPhone did everything well except... you know... actually making calls. I have a friend in NYC who still has trouble making calls with the iPhone in the middle of the day. I loved my iPhone when I had it, but it dropped about 30% of the calls I made with it. I'll post to this thread when my Evo drops a call without a sufficient reason (i.e., going into the DC subway).
Again, the only fanboys I see are the Evo people. Apple makes great products. Anyone into gadgets knows that. But the Evo people seem to have an inferiority complex and appear to be intent on beating you over the head with "The Evo is better" arguments over and over.
Yes. We're beating you over the head with it. That's why you're wandering into a thread ABOUT THE EVO, right? This is pretty much the only thread about the phone on the site, other than the "Cell Phone Recommendation" thread in The Club a couple weeks ago. Why do you click on a thread about a phone and then start whining when people are... gasp... talking about that phone and comparing it to other phones in the thread?
We get it, you like the phone. What does this have to do with the iPhone? Whether the Evo people like it or not, the iPhone is going to draw lines again, like always, because people like having the new ones when they come out.
You're in the Evo thread. Go away if you'd prefer to talk about the iPhone. There's even a thread below this one for it.

That's the most ignorant statement you could possibly make. Coca Cola and Budweiser depend on their name brand to carry them. Budweiser is shit beer. As anyone who knows a little about the brewing process. They'll tell you how horrific Bud is. Do you realize that they don't even use real hops when they make that beer? They just squirt a chemically altered hop-type substance into the brewer to create it.
Of course, it makes sense that you equate sales with quality. No. Hop extract is made from hops. There is no chemical altering - the hop oil, alpha and beta acids are separated from the rest of the matter and put into the brew kettle. In the last few years, even craft brewers have been using this in addition to merely adding hops to the brew kettle. It can add a ridiculous amount of bitterness and hop flavor while reducing the need to filter. It was once looked down upon, but it has been turned on its head in recent years. Even though Budweiser is a watered down version of what it once was, craft brewing still couldn't survive without them. Them being the largest buyer of hops in the world on contract allows hop growers to purchase extra space and make selling lesser used varietals to craft brewers possible. The thing that makes Bud and the like lighter in body is the use of rice in the mash.

Yeah, it's not too great. Thing is, they hire some of the most skilled brewers in the world. Making beer on that grand a scale is nothing to sniff at, and an absolute technical marvel. If you ever have a chance to visit a place like Coors in Golden, Budweiser in St Louis, or any other giant brewer don't miss out on it. At the last Great American Beer Festival Coors brought a pre-prohibition recipe they had dug out of the archives, and it was great. Think Coors Original with more body, and a nice hop bitterness. It was a hit and the keg was gone within an hour with just one ounce pours.

Anything can be too big, but especially a cellphone. Now I've never said that I think the EVO is too big, rather that as a matter of personal preference, for ME, it's too big, BUT the idea that a cellphone can't be too big, and to back that idea up by saying people don't watch 13 inch tv's is absurd.
If Apple had made an iPhone the size of the iPad you would have been the first guy in here saying "What the fuck were they thinking". A TV set that you sit on average 12 FEET away from, isn't the same as a cellphone that on average you view from 12 INCHES away.
What a stupid fucking argument to try to prove your point.

I have no interest in having a rational debate with someone who comes into a thread exclusively to whine about how people are talking about the subject of said thread. It makes no sense to do so. So no, I'm not going to try to bother to be reasonable when he's intentionally being an ass.

As for the Evo brow beaters, there sure is an iPhone thread in this forum, and if you read it, you'll see Evo people trying to convince everyone else how much better it is than the iPhone. Why can't they stick to the Evo thread?
Finally, about the previous iPhones, I don't own one. Never have. Never had a use for it. Thought they were cool but unnecessary for me. However, since I'm taking on more responsibilities at work, having a smart phone seems like a good idea, especially for email.
And since my birthday was on Sunday, I figured since I got shit for my b-day and Father's Day, I'd give myself a nice gift and for once buy myself the latest gadget. And since I'm on AT&T, that gadget would be the iPhone. If I was on Sprint, it would be the Evo.
I don't have any problems with dropped calls because in San Antonio, AT&T has good representation. When I was with Sprint, I could always count on a few places to drop a call. However, I never drop any calls in those same areas with AT&T. In fact, it is extremely rare that I drop any calls.
I actually don't have any qualms with either phone. I was just reading about the Evo because I know people at work who've been raving about it. But I had to comment on the iPhone "fanboys" comment being made because the only fanboys I've seen are Evo people constantly talking about how much better the Evo is (both online and in real life). It's like the Evo people have inferiority complex because they constantly have to tell you that the Evo is better, if only to validate their purchase.
As I said earlier, both phones are cool as shit, so who really cares what you get. I'm getting my phone based on my carrier. Other than that, I really don't care one way the other. The only thing that matters to me is that it doesn't have Windows Mobile (I passed up getting the HTC Pure because of that). Something about that OS rubs me the wrong way.

Oh yeah, I have two TVs both 32". I would never really go past 42" on my TV. Well MAYBE 46" but definitely not bigger, unless I win the lottery and get a huge ass house with a big fucking entertainment room. Then I'm definitely getting the 55" Samsung LED TV. Now that shit is sweet.
But since I live in an apartment, I don't need a TV over 42" if even that. I don't need to be able to see my TV clearly without my glasses. And I'm fucking blind.

You're in the Evo thread. Go away if you'd prefer to talk about the iPhone. There's even a thread below this one for it.
:lmao :lol :wow :lmao
That's the most ignorant statement you could possibly make. Coca Cola and Budweiser depend on their name brand to carry them. Budweiser is shit beer. As anyone who knows a little about the brewing process. They'll tell you how horrific Bud is. Do you realize that they don't even use real hops when they make that beer? They just squirt a chemically altered hop-type substance into the brewer to create it.
Of course, it makes sense that you equate sales with quality. Because the mass public are educated consumers, and know what is the best to buy, right? :lol Gillette Razors, Bose headphones, HP computers, the Nintendo Wii, and Coke. Coca Cola is definitely the best soda on the planet. :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin

I like having discussions about tech. I'm passionate about anything I'm going to invest my time and money in. I work in IT. What's the problem here? Why are you on an internet forum if you don't like animated discourse?

First house I build will have a theater room with either a 60+ inch TV or a projector system.

I'm thinking about returning the Incredible while I still can and just getting that phone, but I'm not quite sure yet.
Looks great though.

The bottom is super skinny, the body slowly growing growing thicker until it's topped by a fat head. (Which gives you something meaty to grab in your pocket, making it surprisingly easy to whip out.)
That's what she said. Sorry, it was too easy.

This looks nice, I sucks that it doesn't have 4g, but it couldn't at this time anyway. I love the idea of DLNA compliance, though I am unsure that I could see using that for anything other than to show off that capability.
Oh and this is funny
What an odd phone. It's tapered but in a crazy way: The bottom is super skinny, the body slowly growing growing thicker until it's topped by a fat head. (Which gives you something meaty to grab in your pocket, making it surprisingly easy to whip out.)

Rooting allows access to the phones source code. It allows you to download certain programs which don't work on unrouted phones, and also to reprogram the phone if you wish and have the ability to do so.

Let's just say that rooting your phone is like modding up your car...don't let the maker know you did it..or say bye bye to your warranty...if something were to go wrong...you would be wise to reset everything back to factory settings before taking it in to see what's wrong...

I'm on the fence about this phone, Sprint says I get 150 off because they love me, that's no joke. The site actually says that, My contract isn't up for another year.
I have and love my Blackberry Tour, and love the blackberry IM service. I just don't know about using a on screen keyboard. I had a Instinct before my Tour and hated typing on it. The 10 bucks more also turns me off and then on top of that I'm gonna be really tempted to used the $30 more to add wifi hot spot to it. It will add up fast, I already have 4 phones and hate my bill now.

i'm so sick of my blackberry i almost went out and bought the new iphone yesterday and was going to sign up with at&t until they told me i'd have to wait 10 days until i would receive the phone... so i came back here yesterday and went through this thread, checked the htc site and went to sprint's site about this phone and i am sure i'd love to have this phone... only problem is, i don't think i'm anywhere close to being up for a new phone with my contract and thus i'd have to shell out like $500 alone just for the phone, that i don't wanna do. i hate my blackberry!

I waited for 5 days. But that was a week after it came out. I had to reserve it. Dunno about the wait now....dunno why there would be. I mean don't get me wrong its a great phone. Just iPhone has a lot of advertising and "popularity" to go with it.

The sprint online store says "Sorry, this device is so hot we can’t keep it on our virtual shelves." on the Evo.
BTW, how is the battery for the users who have it? I keep reading bad things on it. I take my Blackberry off the charger for up to 12 hours before I can charge it. I keep the screen dim but I facebook, and read news and visit ST allot and it last. Will a Evo last?

Frenzy, this is literally the easiest thing you can do. Get on your phone, go to http://unrevoked.com/m/
It will say tap to download, do so, it is less than half a meg, it will dl quickly to your sd card, then you just use a file manager to open it and viola you are rooted.
It also works for the HERO which is why I know this. I have already set up the hero to be a wifi hotspot, set the clock on my cpu (low when the screen is off to save battery, high when its on for performance), and one or two other things. All of this in about an hour. Its freakin great!
