I tried to ALT F10 factory restore it... but the partition seems to be damaged and it just stalls.... I do not have a boot disk - Windows CD - It runs on 7. Can anyone help??? SERIOUSLY... I will pay.

You have until 9pm to go to Altex off 1604 by IH-10
go get a new HD and one of these.
http://www.techrockstar.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Brando-Unitek-SATA-adapter.jpg
after you put an operating system in the new HD just transfer the old files you still want from the corrupted HD into a folder.
HD adapter 14.00-24.00 dollars new Hd 50.00-120.00 dollars or 10.00-25.00 dollars off craigslist.
you can borrow my hd adapter if you bring it back by Thursday.

What exactly are you trying to do? Recover your files? or simply wipe the computer and re-install the OS?

If he doesn't have anything important on it wiping would be a lot cheaper.

It sounds like the partition is corrupted, I wouldn't bother trying to restore it from that. OP, just format your disk and get it ready for the new OS. Just get an OS disk, its pretty simple to install after that. Pop in the disk and your ready to go. You can either buy a license or if your cheap pirate it of the web.

Lot of good feedback in here. I remember back in 1996-97 I got that FAT32 error window on a 300 MHz Packard Bell, since I lived like 5 blocks from Bun N barrel on Austin HWY I took the pc to help me computers on Austin HWY right before it hits Broadway. anyway it's not that shit means anything if you don't live in San Antonio and for that I apologize!
Anyway the guy was real friendly and said to give him a call later so i did about an hour and 45 minutes later and he said "We are still working on your computer we should know something real soon. I asked him what if you don't find anything do i have to pay a service fee he said "we charge 55.00 dollars an hour so it's include in the bill and I said how much i owe you now, he said "with taxes about 108.00 dollars so far. I told him I paid 50 for the computer and I only have 129.00 dollars i think you better stop.
he said ok and I ended up going to best buy back when they sold Hard drives and paid another 75.00 to fix it i had to install Windows Me remember that one? I thought it was the shit back then. Anyway after that day I never went back to another PC shop again unless I was buying something.......it's like going back to a fast food place that had a roach in the fries one day you don't forgive that easy, at least i couldn't I thought about those innocent victims out there who will wind up paying someone 155.00 dollars to remove a virus or replace a HD..(short rant sorry) ...... long story short this forum was not around at that time and I could have used some of you back then to give me advise! :toast
Update: Packi is using windows 7 and I don't think he has any software so keep that in mind when you give him another tip. :tu

That is an important question that most people in the geek forum give when they have a problem they usually say.....
Hey everyone I have a 2004 eMachine XR-8990 with windows 7 yoda yoda yoda.... not this bitch! him come in here like Sarah Palin and not giving us really much to go on.
When he said he was able to get on the windows help page I figured he lost his Hal.dll....... i have seen it appear as..Winnt_root \System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt
have you seen it before? is my pocket protector showing?

I've had problems with drives and modems before with HP, cheap/breaking keypad on a Dell, slow runtimes on a Gateway, but so far I've had no problems whatsoever with my cheap ass Acer. Other than the seemingly low battery life, I like it a lot.

that's cause hp flatout sucks and so does gateway, dell's only incentive is their "good" tech support. as for acer, they are still trying to come up in the pc biz.

how many partitions? if there's 2, chances are your bootdisk/windowscd is on your other partition and can be booted up through a command line.

If it's running 7 then I'm assuming your laptop is less than a year old. I'm also assuming it's still under warranty. Take it back. Let them worry about it and fix it. Sounds like youre having a pretty severe error for having it so short a time.

I think I have the same or a very similar problem....
I have a toshiba laptop that's pretty fucked up. I'm in college now, but when I'm home I just use the format disc that came with it to format it every couple of weeks, and that works fine.
Anyway, about a week ago, the windows xp won't boot up. Basically, it gets to the stage where there's that little line running under "Windows XP", and then the screen goes black. The mouse appears and I can move it, but it just stays stuck like this. Have tried safe mode, but it's the same problem.
Anyway, I turned it in to student services here, and just asked them to format it without backing any of the data. It's been a week though, and those fucks haven't done shit yet. Shoulden't take this friggen long to just format a computer.
Any advice on what I should do? I'm starting to think I should just pick it back up and ask my parents to mail me the format disk.

Every couple of weeks?
Have them check the fitness of the drive before doing anything else.

UPDATE -
I finally got the manufacturer to admit it was a hardware issue... I shipped it back, they're giving it new guts.

I got a few of those 250Gbs seagate's passport looking HDs from best buy 49.00 dollars each, and already one of them is making that clicking sound. you know the sound it means (you better copy everything off me because i may not boot up next time)
I have a 500gb I have to take apart and place the platter in another case. the kit alone cost 600 dollars and I still have to buy the exact same drive in order to do the transfer. Something tells me I may be better off borrowing all that data off the torrents again it may be cheaper and faster.
The truth is your data is never really safe. Unless it's on a DVDr and you have it tucked away somewhere your SOL with those huge Hard drives they can go out at any moment.
You notice how they make them real narrow so you stand them up only to accidentally knock them over and have to buy a new one?
