Before the playoffs, I guess the 9th seed would be bumped.
How about if it happens in a later round?

The playoffs would probably be canceled.

Weird questions but if it happened in another round I suppose they would replace the dead team with the team that was previously eliminated by death squad in the previous round.

This is probably the only way San Antonio gets past the first round.

There would be a D-League call up for however many players were on the original roster.

I've heard that if a team plane crashes all nba teams have to pick one starter and one bench player to go on that team to make a new team, I actually find this a good way, but don't think it is true

I'm pretty sure Matthew Mcconaughey would be hired to put a new team together.

This ^.
There's actually a plan in place by the NBA, I read about it a while back. Basically the affected team would be allowed to have a draft, and pick up players from others teams. So the 8th team would still make it to the playoffs.

From any team I think.

"In the NBA, a disaster occurs in which five or more players die or are dismembered. Similar to the NFL, the NBA plan calls for a disaster draft, in which each team would protect five players and the disaster team then would build a team from the remaining pool of talent."
http://espn.go.com/gen/s/2001/0328/1163463.html

"If five or more players on a single team are killed or permanently disabled "anywhere in the world at any time," the NBA would hold a dispersal draft.
The draft allows the team that suffered the disaster to pick one player from each of the NBA's other teams until it has restocked its roster. The other teams are each allowed to protect five players, and for every player they give up, they receive $1 million from the disaster-stricken team's insurance settlement (up from $400,000 when the plan was first adopted)"
http://www.columbian.com/weblogs/gregjayne/2010/jan/16/nbas-disaster-plan/

The National Basketball Association (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Basketball_Association) (NBA) contingency plan activates if five or more players on a team "'die or are dismembered.'"[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disaster_draft#cite_note-nyt1992-2)[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disaster_draft#cite_note-espn2001-0) A special "Disaster Draft" would be held in which other NBA teams could only protect five players,[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disaster_draft#cite_note-espn2001-0) so that quality sixth men (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sixth_man) would be available. No more than one player would be drafted from a team.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disaster_draft#cite_note-nyt1992-2)

Only in college sports with Marshall, IIRC.

Plane with Heat players makes emergency landing (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-heat-emergencylanding)

The charter jet carrying the Miami Heat home from a road trip made an emergency landing early Sunday in Chicago after a mechanic on board became ill.

Team spokesman Tim Donovan said the man, who was not identified, was OK and that team trainers tended to him in the air for what was believed to be a diabetic coma. When the plane landed in Chicago, he was taken to a hospital.

The flight eventually resumed, and the Heat landed in Miami at 5:04 a.m. Sunday

“Just landed back in the MIA feels good to be back home safe and sound,” Heat guard Daequan Cook wrote on his Twitter feed.

Heat guard Dwyane Wade wrote on Twitter about the surprise landing.

“Hey everyone pray for our pilot,” Wade wrote. “… He went into a Coma. God bless this man and his family.”

Donovan said the man was in the cockpit when he became ill.

The team was returning to Miami after beating the Minnesota Timberwolves 97-84 Saturday night.

You're talking like this is a religious holiday or something, it's about rabbits, eggs, and chocolate, I fail to see any connection between any of those and religion. I was going to post it on Friday but I was having a good day and got distracted.

The disaster draft would happen before the start of the following season; I don't think it's applicable to this kind of situation. I doubt there's any kind of contingency plan to deal with this.

I think they'd probably cancel the rest of the playoffs and declare the team involved in the accident as the champions. A lot would depend on the mood among the public/press. I hope we never have to find out.

no way would they give the disaster team the title at of pity because if they did Mavs Fans would have....na this dark humor shit is just not my style.

a bye or cancellation of the playoff seems likely with the bye being the number one choice.

You're right. Torino won five Championships in a row - the last one 1949. 5 gamedays before the end of the season they were already Champions and so they traveled to Lisboa for a friendly match. But the players came never back to Italy.
