Jackson: Referees turned against usEmail Print Comments 34Share8 retweet 12By Dave McMenamin

LOS ANGELES -- With 59.0 seconds remaining in the second quarter of the Lakers' 100-81 loss to the Spurs on Sunday, Los Angeles forward Ron Artest and San Antonio guard Manu Ginobili were called for a double-technical foul after getting tangled up while the ball was waiting to be inbounded.

On the Spurs' ensuing possession, just a second of game clock later, Artest was called for a personal foul and Kobe Bryant was then whistled for a technical foul for approaching the official during the dead ball.

All of the calls were made by 25-year NBA veteran referee Bennett Salvatore and left Lakers coach Phil Jackson in a foul mood after the game.

"Tonight they wouldn't let Ron play the way he played prior to [the technical foul call]," Jackson said. "[Ginobili] could hook Ron; [Artest] didn't get what was going on and ended up getting too many fouls on him."

Artest finished the game with two personal fouls, plus the technical. San Antonio was leading 40-37 at the time of the double-technical call and finished the half on an 8-0 run in the final minute.

"The way we ended up the half I think turned the referees against us and when you do that, that's an unfortunate thing," Jackson said. "Ron didn't back off and didn't read that official well enough to know, you got to back off, you got to lighten the load, he's not going to take any more of that. Ginobili forced the issue and got the calls."

Bryant's technical was his 13th of the season. If he is whistled for three more technicals, for a total of 16, in the Lakers final five games, he will be suspended by the league for one game. The slate is wiped clean for the postseason, when amassing seven technical fouls results in a one-game ban.

"You never know with a referee," Jackson said. "You go over and talk to him, he may not have wanted anybody to talk to him at that point. It didn't look like Kobe berated him at all, but you guys probably had a better television view than I had at that end of the court."

Bryant's technical carries a $2,000 fine by the league for each "T" amassed more than 11 in a season.

"It didn't look like he was berating him or anything," Jackson said. "But, with Bennett you don't know what you're going to get."

Jackson also had criticism for Artest for how he responded to the situation.

"On both the replays that we looked at, Ginobili hooks him," Jackson said. "He does the up-and-under move with the hook. Obviously the referees just didn't want the contact at that time. I told Ron at halftime, 'You got to back off when it's time to back off.' You just can't keep being persistent about that because they sent you a warning signal, and that signal was, 'Back off.' We ended up giving them some momentum at the half and probably got the referees on the back end of our game."

Artest had little to say about the incident after the game.

"I don't even remember," Artest said. "It was just basketball. I can't remember what happened."

Ron Artest is a mentally ill person. If the Lakers don't win the title this year, Ron Ron will probably be the reason why. He's not Dennis Rodman mentally ill, but he does break the offense too much with wild shots and is just not a good person.

Popovich didn't run to the media when the refs allow Artest to run roughshod over San Antonio players a couple of weeks ago. Pop has a little more class and perspective than Jackson.

Queen Phillip Jackson does not like it when refs don't bow before the great Lakers and the great Lakers coach. He's on his last coaching legs right now and he's pulling out all the stops to get another title.

We already saw how great of coach he was pre-Gasol. In '06 he got bounced by a suns team that had no Amare and then lost Raja Bell due to suspension in an elimination game. In '07 he gets taken out in 5 games by the Suns. The guy sucks ass when he coaches against a team that is more stacked then his. I have a lot more respect for coach like Larry Brown who is able to win with a lot less talent.

Have you guys watched Ron Artest play D this year?..this guy hand checks more than anybody I've ever seen and he gets away with it..of course in a game where refs actually call the game legitimately, Phil Jackson has a problem with it..his teams are always favored by the refs, partly because he works them well through the media..

"Ron didn't back off and didn't read that official well enough to know, you got to back off, you got to lighten the load, he's not going to take any more of that. Ginobili forced the issue and got the calls."

So Ginobili is smarter than Artest and has great BBall IQ, right.

He will try to work the refs but I don't Ron is ever going to get any sympathy. His past actions put him at an immediate disadvantage. They should have kept Ariza. Ron drags every team down in the end.

"Tonight they wouldn't let Ron play the way he played prior to [the technical foul call]," Jackson said. "[Ginobili] could hook Ron; [Artest] didn't get what was going on and ended up getting too many fouls on him."

Artest finished the game with two personal fouls

Hmm, so 2 total fouls are too many for a hand and hip checking defensive player like Ron. Ok Phil.

"Tonight they wouldn't let Ron play the way he played prior to [the technical foul call]," Jackson said.

Funny, I thought that was the intention of the ref for assessing a technical in the first place, to discourage Artest's bullying tactics.:lol

TJastal

Somebody should tell Phil that calling out Artest for not keeping a lid on his actions then bitching to the media about not getting enough calls is kind of hypocritical.

Refs are probably getting tired of his crybaby rants to the media any game where his team doesn't get every call.

Just because Phil Jackson's a douche doesn't change the fact that he's one of the all-time greatest coaches in NBA history.

I was actually shocked Salvatore and his crew called the game loose and let them play. It says something that a fairly evenly officiated game makes Jackson feel cheated. When you're used to being the cheater fair play will feel like you're being cheated.

Don't know what he's complaining about, 19 to 21 in foul comparisons, thats pretty close. It all depends on whether you're over the limit that leads to free throws. You knew what you were getting when you signed artest, this guy is not convertible to your yen techniques.

But I hate his lobbying cause in the POs it usually works, hope the refs won't succumb to it. Totally out of character for him to say this in a reg season game, only shows you how nervous he is.

Let's be really honest here...

the previous game the spurs/lakers played before sunday---it was a pretty even game---

except for----

Artest WAS allowed to bully people in the second half---and allowed the lakers to get in the spurs guards heads---therefore a victory

this time the refs did not let Artest bully/foul people and guess what---better team won

more than anything--this issue will decide who goes the farthest in the playoffs---sad but true...the refs will have a major influence on who are the champs in the end...
