View Full Version : Hey, Slomo
This happened in your neck of the woods in the way back, what do you know (if anything) of this story (http://www.amazon.com/Forgotten-500-Untold-Greatest-Mission/dp/0451222121/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1270654672&sr=8-2)?

Well, I'm from around there too...
Never heard about this particular event, but Chetniks were not active in my part and ex-YU narrative was that Partisans were the ultimate good guys and all other fractions complete crooks. They did the saving and others did the betraying :)
Resistance in Yugoslavia was strong, especially in second half of the war, so generally speaking - if locals got to them first, they would be safe.
Back in the 90s local newspaper quite often featured stories about visiting airmen reunited with their rescuers, all of them saved by Partisans, who were only truly active resistance here.

Is that Gerard's brother?
Only a true fan of homoeroticism would have noticed that.

No I haven't - not this specific story. I think I'm going to read it to see how factual it is.
Good tip :tu

This story has been unnoticed for so long, it's interesting.
Anyway, even if they had some allied support at one time, the Chetniks were not seen as resistance and not seen as the good guys, except for extreme nationalistic Serbs. They also were cooperating with the Nazi's
The Chetniks were locally organised and many had hatred against other ethnicities in Yugoslavia, while the Partisans were better organised in the whole region and had support of more ethnicities and they were represented. The Chetniks turned on to the Partisans and started battling eachother. The Partisans eventually got the support of the allies.
As for the image of the resistance in general being strong back then in Yugoslavia, I think it is somewhat overrated.
