Oden ain't making $39MM over the next 3 years.

Oden ain't making $39MM over the next 3 years.

Probably because he's never proved he's worth anything. Even if Manu's play falls off, he will always be the smartest passer this team has ever had.

Mel_13
04-09-2010, 12:43 AM
Oden ain't making $39MM over the next 3 years.

And?

Oden has cost Portland nearly 15M for playing in 82 games over the last three years. He has almost 7M guaranteed for next year. Really though, that's just the tip of the iceberg. He cost Portland the opportunity to draft a HOF player.

Even if Manu's level of play diminishes over the next three years, the price the Spurs will have paid over his 11 year NBA career will be well in line with what he has produced for the team.

How likely is it that Portland will ever be able to say that about Oden?

Still seems like a bargain. There is no replacing a guy like Manu and what he can do for the team. Manu is worth the max if healthy. No one plays harder, is more creative, or is more determined on the court. The Spurs need this guy in the clutch like the Lakers need Kobe.

after having been underpaid all of his career, he will end up overpaid like many other aging players.

35 M for Tim + Manu in 2011-12 could hurt the team. if tony goes back to his old self next year and obtains a 15M/year contract, that could be 50 M/year for the big three, with two "old" players. a lot of money.

anyway, 3 more years of manu IS a good news, that's for sure.

Yeah, it's probably a bit more than what his production in the future will be worth, but Manu's always been the underpaid member of the Big 3. The Spurs have a habit of using new contracts to pay for past contributions...

The fact that the FO is fine with locking in a pretty large amount of money in 2011-12 could mean one of 2 things:
1. Tim may be willing to renegotiate his contract
2. George Hill may be the starting PG post 2010-11

The Spurs have had a lot of players whose impact is not always present in the boxscore. Just watching Manu, I know how integral he is to the Spurs. Reading that article, and seeing the numbers, serves only to back up what I already knew. SOme of those stats just blow me away.

I'm glad he will continue to be a Spur. Even though objectively speaking its a tad pricey, not having Manu for the remainder of Tim's career would be even more costly.

Pessimist: So it looks to be fully guaranteed AND there's apparently a trade kicker that makes his contract even more untradeable should he flop. Jeez.

Optimist: Manu is absolutely necessary to the Spurs remaining in contention through the Duncan era and is a fan favorite that will retire a Spur. Awesome news!

Honestly, I feel a little bit of both right now.

If he flops he won't have much trade value anyway. I'm not worried about his lack of effort at any rate.

We got zero hometown discount, which shows you how concerned the front office was about letting him explore free agency.

I love that Manu will likely retire a Spur (or at least that we'll get all of his truly productive years). It's unfortunate that we had to commit to that big of a salary, because the roster will be negatively impacted by it in a couple years. Overpaying a veteran, oft-injured player will make it tougher to field a competitive roster. Need to hope for good health for Manu, obviously, which is pretty much what we've been hoping for the past several years anyway. The odds get worse the older he gets, though.

He could have gotten more dollars, more years, or both if he went on the market in July.

Plus the Spurs will probably see a bump in season ticket renewals and purchases with this announcement now rather than in the summer.

actually, that is a good observation. If Hill ends up being 75 % of the player tony is (which he is very far from being right now whatever says the "bbal experts" on this forum), trading TP could make sense.

for that to happen, tim and manu will have to keep on performing on a high level and TP not to keep on his continuous progression over the years before this injury plagued season. i can't see the spurs tradind tony if he's heading to be by far the best member of the big 3 in 2011-2012

Still, 35 M for Tim and Manu could hampered the team in the future, as great as it is to see them end their career in SA.

Tim. Pop, and Tony could all be gone by 2012-13. The Spurs would have liked to limit the extension to two years, but the ship sailed on that possibility with Manu's performance over the last six weeks.

They did what they had to do to maximize the team's chances in 2010-11 and, to a lesser degree, in 2011-12. Although the looming lockout in 2011 might mean that most or all of that year's salaries will never be paid.

It's really hard to know what will happen. Would TP really want to sign a multi-year extension next season knowing that the Spurs will be in rebuild mode one year later? Would the Spurs want to do it?

Right, so it may have helped the team to begin the rebuilding project if they had a trade-friendly contract on Manu....not a fully guaranteed $14M with a trade kicker.

All that said, I completely agree with your assessment of the situation. It would've been nice, but Manu's play dictated the necessity for a third year and the Spurs honestly had no realistic alternative if they wanted to stay competitive through the Duncan era.

That's why I'm content with the signing and am happy one of the most entertaining Spurs player I've ever seen will spend his entire NBA career here and retire in silver and black....hopefully with one or two more rings!

I think Manu's new contract definitely means that Parker will be traded, unless we can get someone to take RJ off our hands.

G. Hill isn't a true point guard, but he and Manu can play that position.

I'd rather have a PG who can shoot the three and distribute, like a Steve Blake. I know Blake isn't a defensive stopper, but I like what he contributes to an offense.

So if we could trade Parker for a serviceable 4 or 5 who can block shots, and a backup point who can shoot, I'd be fine with that.

Max deal plus a trade kicker? The front office gambled and rolled snake eyes. Looking back on it, gambling was kinda dumb because letting Manu walk was never an option. Even a hurt Manu is better than what you are going to find on the free agent market. They should have locked him up when his value was lower.

Hindsight is always 20/20.

If they had locked him up for 2yrs/20M earlier in the season and then the ankle gave out, we'd be reading about how stupid the FO was to not wait for proof that he was healthy. Hurt Manu wasn't the only possibility, we could have had broke Manu.

Also, most of the extra money between 2/20 and 3/39 is in the third year.

As Bruce used to say, it is what it is. The Spurs got a bargain for several years on Manu's contract, now they'll probably overpay him for his final years.

I'm just happy we'll get to see him finish his career in silver and black.

Good news that the re-signing is official. Spurs had no other choice than that and letting Manu go would have been a disaster.

Spurs have invested a lot of money in Manu. I hope he will be able to play three more years. Spending $14.1M for a 35 years old Manu is a big gamble. I still have some doubts the third year is fully guaranteed.

he played for very little Money in 2003 and played low key on his 05 contract too.... i think the overpay is also compensation on what he gave up before as he has always produced over his paycheck value... therefore... after the contract ends and you put in perspective all the money he got for what he gave it'll be a fair deal.. no more no less...
