lol...its gonna be a close series...but the Mavs are not scared one bit of the Spurs. Dirk can do whatever he wants....which is the key. Mavs should win but that's why they play the games

Do the Spurs have anything to play for on Wednesday night? Are they locked in at 7 now?

Locked in:

1. LA
8. Zombie Sonics

My understanding is that the Blazers clinch the 6 seed with a win Wednesday night at home against Golden State. That game doesn't tip off until 9:30 central time. Spurs have to assume Portland will take care of bidness at home against the Warriors. So the Spurs lose and Dallas clinches the 2 seed. Spurs have to beat Dallas and hope Golden State beats Portland to move up to 6 - and by beating Dallas they might set up a matchup with the Mavs at 3/6.

Even if SAS and por have same record, Por has the tiebreaker. Only way mavs tank the game on wed and let SA win is if Utah loses at GSW

If Spurs beat Mavs, AND golden state beats Portland, then it'll be Portland/Dallas and SA/Thuggets or Jazz.

Kinda. If the Nuggets beat the Suns, Denver clinches the division, which would mean Utah (the only team that holds a tiebreaker edge over Dallas) would no longer be able to get as high as #2.

I'll be surprised if they rest the players... you would think you want to get to the playoffs with a little rhythm and momentum... but if the 7th seed is a lock, Pop might not want to show all his cards yet...

It's going to be interesting how this develops...

7th seed is pretty airtight when it would take a Warriors win over Portland to move up.

Add in the fact the game is in Portland and it will be a B2B game.

And it doesn't tip off until the Mavs-Spurs game is almost over. I think it will also depend if San Antonio has a say in who they play - as in beating Dallas knocks the Mavs down to 3 and gives San Antonio a more desirable matchup at 2.

What does "right now" mean? Are the Spurs in a game right now?

Past 5 games? Spurs 3-2, Mavs 4-1

Past 10 games? 7-3 for both teams

Since All Star BReak? Mavs have a better record.

I hate when people say this "right now" bullshit, it's so stupid.

Series comes down to talent/matchups, not whose playing better "right now"

One of the biggest arguments against the Mavs is their margin of victory is significantly lower than every other team in the Western Conference at +2.7. In fact, despite being 2nd in the West the Mavs have the 12th best margin of victory in the league.

But I would like to present a theory for the Mavs margin of victory, "the Josh Howard cancer" effect.

J-Ho made his return to the regular rotation of the Mavs on December 5th up until the ASB, and during this time the Mavs went 18-14 with a margin of victory of -.5. IN fact if you throw out the 50 point win against the Knicks as an outlier, their margin of victory was worse than 2 points a game. It should be noted the Mavs had Dampier injury issues at this time which forced more time for Gooden, who has terrible on/off stats despite putting up a seemingly decent 8/7 (or something like that).

In the games before that, and the games after the ASB, the Mavs are 36-13, with a margin of victory of +4.7. If you throw out the 34 point loss to the Knicks as an outlier, it becomes +5.5.

Granted, every team can pick and choose information like this, but I'm just pointing out that the Mavs may not be a fool's gold team with an inflated record :).

Dallas is a good team, but I really like the Spurs chances against them. It would be a close and tough series. Oh, the Spurs have won five games against division leaders in a span of two weeks. IMHO, that's enough reason for Spurs fans to be upbeat

I'm really looking forward to this series Mike. We're talking about one of the most heated rivalries in the NBA, with hall of famers leading both teams. One key difference this time around from 2006 is that Jerry Stackhouse is now on the Bucks instead of the Mavs. In Stackhouse we're talking about one of the toughest players to defend off the dribble, a tough minded veteran who can give you 20-25 points a game. Mavs are really going to miss his presence in this series, and if I'm the Spurs I'm saying: Phew!
