Hayes seems like the prototypical Spur role player: sold bball IQ, shoot the 3, versatile, etc.

Does anybody know how good Hayes is on defense especially his lateral quickness? I don't want to bash him simply b/c he's a Net, but I haven't seen him play much since he was a Piston.

Could definitely see the Spurs signing Hayes. He is a solid player with range and has good size. Could see him signing cheap if the Outlaws/Butlers are gone.

I haven't followed him, but per DraftExpress (http://www.draftexpress.com/article/NBA-Scouting-Reports-Central-Division-Part-One--2669/) circa 2008:

Solid defender who has average lateral quickness and strength. Better at guarding strong small forwards than quicker shooting guards. Will get beat of the dribble from time to time. Hard worker. Goes after loose balls. Most comfortable defending in the midrange than the perimeter. Strong enough to keep his man off the block. Not going to take a lot of risks, will commit some careless fouls when beat off the dribble.

this is a very good scouting report about Hayes. (just posted the section about his defense).
note: the report is from 2009 and he didn't exactly improve last season.

Hayes could be a decent solution for the 5th spot in the wing rotation, not more. which means, if he signs for the vet. minimum (like Bogans), it might be a nice deal. he has good size, but by any stretch he isn't the player we would need most urgently (the long defensive SF, who can also defend some perimeter PFs if asked)

On defense:

Opinions on Hayes’ defensive skills range from both ends of the spectrum. Nets officials have referred to Hayes as being one of their better perimeter defenders, and Draft Express describes him as a “solid defender who has average lateral quickness and strength.” Hollinger, on the other hand, describes Hayes as having “defensive shortcomings.”

Looking at statistics, there are both positive and negative indicators for Hayes. To his credit, the Nets defense last season gave up 109.3 points per 100 possessions with Hayes on the court and 114.9 points with him off the court. Teams had an eFG of 49.1 percent with Hayes on the court and 52.5 percent off the court.

As for negative signs, opposing SFs had an eFG of .535 percent last season against Hayes, good for a PER of 17.5. When you take into account Hayes’ PER as a SF of 11.0, that’s a differential of -5.3, which again brings the discussion back to the idea of whether or not Hayes is qualified to be a starter in this league.

Hayes would be a decent fallback option if Spurs can't get their primary target(s).

Please, the spurs don't need yet another 6'5" guy.

Jarvis Hayes fits what we need to replace Bogans. He can be the backup SF and do a decent job at it.

I've watched Jarvis Hayes when he was in the Wizards. Always though of him as a SG. Plays like a 6'5" guy... can't imagine that he's actually 6'8".

Well, I would pass... don't think he has decent enough defense and his 3pt shot (which he takes more than he should) isn't that reliable.

Ok... did a little more googling... found this pic:

Najera is listed at 6'8". Looks like Hayes is at least an inch shorter, so guess he's 6'7".

Najera does play like a 6'8" or 6'9" guy. But Hayes plays like a SG.

I still stand by my earlier comment that he plays like a 6'5" guy.

Yeah, the Jarvis Hayes time is over. He should be Plan H.

Could still be an option.... realistically.

probably still the best option out there.

^ I concur.

Rumor has it the Nets may pull a S&T w/ him for another big man. Hayes is demanding something more than the minimum wage, but so far I haven't heard any offers over that amount.

Jarvis Hayes could continue his career overseas. According to the Israeli media, the 29-year-old forward has been offered to Maccabi Tel Aviv for the next season. In the 2009-10 season, Hayes averaged 7.8 points and 2.4 rebounds per game for the New Jersey Nets. thehoopsmarket.com (http://thehoopsmarket.com/news/jarvis-hayes,-offered-to-maccabi-tel-aviv.aspx?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TheHoopsMarket+%28The+Hoops+M arket%29&utm_content=Google+Reader)

Maccabi media coverage is maybe the less reliable in Europe. Every summer, about half of the FA are linked with them. I wouldn't read too much into it.

Anyway, training camp starts in two weeks. If Spurs wants to add a vet SF to their team, it's now or never and the pickings are very slim.

:tu you right Maccabi media coverage doesn't have much credibility...
i even remember that two years ago there was report on Ian Mahinmi close to signing with Maccabi while he was still under contract with Spurs, rumor that did not make sense at all.

Sources told ESPN.com that the deal, which has yet to be finalized, would send former All-Star point guard Devin Harris to Charlotte, with Bobcats forward Boris Diaw moving to Utah. The Bergen Record reported Friday afternoon that the Nets would also receive Bobcats guard D.J. Augustin, with New Jersey's Jarvis Hayes accompanying Harris to Charlotte in a sign-and-trade.

If you're just looking to make the playoffs and go out in flames in the first or second round, 'Melo's your man. Building around a wing player is a fool's game, though. Even Kobe proved from 2004-2008 that he needed either Shaq or Gasol to get to the promised land, and he's been the best wing in the league for years. AJ is right in this case. You have to keep what you have and build around it. Take the chance that Favors blows up, because 'Melo ain't taking you anywhere special.
