There are some rumors on IBN about Partizan Belgrade being interested in him.

If that's the case and he can get some guaranteed money (as guaranteed as overseas money can be, at least), I've gotta believe he'll be going the way of Malik.

I don't see any possible way he's on the roster. He puts them over the tax $94,310 at the moment and there isn't much need for him even if he didn't.

Spurs have so much guards (Parker, Hill, Ginobili, Temple, Neal, Anderson and Gee) that it's nearly impossible for Jerrells to make the roster.

Partizan Belgrade would be an awesome place for Jerrells. They are the best team in Europe at developing young players. They have lost their coach this summer but they still should have some quality coaching. Curtis Jerrells could be the next Bo McCalebb.

If that's true, I hope he takes it.

I feel Gee, Anderson and Temple have so much more to offer to the team than Jerrells. There's no space for him here.

The Jerrells signing had almost nothing to do with Spurs. It was a Toros related move. The whole Jerrells saga also shows how Spurs FO is damn smart when it comes to use tricks to break D-League/CBA rules.

Not really sure what the Spurs are doing with Jerrells. He hasn't really shown he can be a serviceable backup in this league.

If anything Jerrells is like the new Marcus Williams. Works hard but just doesnt cut it. He's likely to lose his spot to Temple like Williams did to Hairston.

If it were a Toros move it would have been much more profitable to sign A.J. Abrams, who was a free agent. He played in Austin for UT, played in Austin for McNeil. He alone could have brought in UT students. I don't buy it being Toros related.

Abrams is a SG.

In the 2009 summer, Spurs were looking at a PG for the Toros because their former PGs went overseas. They used some tricks to get Jerrells.

At the end of the 2009-2010 season, they signed Jerrells likely because other team were interested in him and Spurs wanted that Toros kept their PG for the end of the season and the playoffs.

I would be willing to bet that if it came down to how many wins do the Toros have vs how many people come to the games the Spurs would prefer attendance. Jerllels isn't a terrible player, but he isn't a good one either. The Spurs might have been legitimately interested in him. Believe me, not many people in Austin know who the Toros are, much less the greater Austin areas. Any kind of publicity is good. Having a Baylor player, that's alright I guess. Having a UT player for a minor league team that plays in walking distance from the UT campus and better than Jerrels would make a lot more sense from a Toros standpoint.

Maybe Abrams didn't want to sign for peanuts in a minor league?? It takes two to tango.

The Spurs are also trying to develop and evaluate talent. That's hard to do without a distributor. I think they'll give up a few fannies in the seats to get a clearer idea of the potential of their players in Austin.

I don't think that having a UT player will significantly raise Toros attendance.

Believe me, the Curtis Jerrells move has everything to do with the Toros.

Last summer, Jerrells was undrafted and didn't have a great SL. Despite that, Spurs outbid Detroit and offered him $75K in guaranteed money. It's impossible to explain that move without an under the table agreement: Jerrells would go to the D-League after being waived by Spurs. And since Jerrells played high school ball in Austin and went to Baylor, he was automatically allocated to the Toros instead of going through the D-League draft.

And how can you argue that Spurs signing Jerrells at the end of the season isn't a Toros related move: Jerrells was assigned to the Toros the day he signed his contract with Spurs.

Bruno

That's fine.

Stick to your theory and continue to not understand why Spurs went with Jerrells and not with a player like Cecric Jackson.

On my side I'm going to stick to the theory that it was a Toros related move. Strangely, this theory explains everything and makes perfect sense.

The University of Texas has over 50,000 students, if a former star player at the university played there then there isn't a doubt in my mind he would draw. That has already been done. The impact is minimal. The move to the suburbs is probably going to do more for attendance than bringing in a former Longhorn ever did.

ChumpDumper
09-12-2010, 01:19 PM
And yeah, Jerrells was initially signed to be a Toro. That was probably the easiest prediction ever

https://webspace.utexas.edu/cokerwr/www/slides/magicians/kreskin.jpg
Kreskin predicts he will be an allocation player for the Toros.

ChumpDumper

While I don't think he counts, Chris Clack didn't work because A) the Toros were brand new B) he was past his prime and way past his playing weight and C) most students don't know pre-Rick Barnes era players. Most students don't know the Austin Toros exist.

Then explain to me why the Spurs would have any interest in Jerrells at all if it were purely for the Toros? Why on Earth would Pop give a damn about the Toros winning? Why would he use up a roster spot unless he thought Jerrells had potential to contribute to the Spurs at some point down the road? Why would RC? The point of owning the Toros is to put projects in a place where they can play in the Spurs system and become better. An experiment that has failed at the moment.Of course he was a project for the Spurs. Why are you thinking this is being questioned?

ChumpDumper
09-12-2010, 01:30 PM
Ah, well he's a long-term project for the Spurs if anything. If they only wanted a competent point guard, Squeaky Johnson would be playing 40 minutes a game. Given the nature of the D-League, it's difficult to plan having players even an entire season, so there is some truth to giving him some money to remain a Toro for the Toros' sake.

You can't develop well prospect in Austin if the team sucks.

So why sign a player who had a decent summer league and shows little NBA promise? He's a 4 year college player at an above average D1 school so he has that going for him.

Who are you talking about?

ChuckD
09-12-2010, 03:35 PM
Knowing Abrams personally, he would have been just fine signing with the Spurs with the understanding that he would be with the Toros most of the year.

?? We didn't have a big club roster spot for him, or room under the tax threshhold. He would have been signing a d-league deal, or not playing for Austin. Guess which happened?

Partizan Belgrade sign Oliver Lafayette, which should now mean no Curtis Jerrells.

Partizan going away from Jerrells could be a sign that he has now a legit shot at making the team and Spurs don't push him to go overseas like they did with Hairston.

I'm pretty sure Malik's overseas because that injury left too much uncertainty with them so close to the tax (needing to know they had 13 capable players), but I have no doubt Jerrells has a legit opportunity to make the team -- which is as shocking to write as it is to say . . .

i think right now as of today, Cj should get minutes over Temple and Neal. Cj knows the system and has shown great defense and court leadership. him and Gee should have the upperhand on all the new guys.

Jerrells has finally signed with Partizan Belgrade where he will play with James Gist and Jan Vesely. It's a team Spurs' scouts will follow closely this year.
