Considering Jones has only drafted 3 maybe 4 QBs since Aikman (1989) thats not a tough call.

Now I get shit all the time for this. I think Carter could have been a good QB. He got hooked on drugs after her went 10-6. I think McGee and Musgrave(? spelling) were the only other two. And they were late rounders.

As draft picks. I don't think so.

No doubt Cowboys have had some shitty QBs since Aikman. As GM, Jones has to take responsibilty. I was just saying his drunken comments were not as off base as you suggested they were. I really do hate the motherfucker and have no clue why I am defending him. Peace!

I'd count Henson as a draft pick. They basically used a draft pick to trade for him to prevent him from re-entering the draft. So he used a draft pick on someone that was going to be in the draft....

Some news outlets owe Jerry Jones an apology

Column by TIM COWLISHAW / The Dallas Morning News | [email protected]

For those waiting for an NFL suspension of Jerry Jones or an apology from the Cowboys owner ... don't hold your breath.

If anything, I think the "mainstream" news outlets, including The Dallas Morning News, that ran the video of Jones caught on a camera phone in a bar criticizing Bill Parcells and Tim Tebow, owe Jones an apology.

It once was much easier to determine the journalism world from the entertainment gossip scene. The distinction between investigation and titillation got blurred a long time ago.

But prominent news organizations have clearly-defined rules and source policies when it comes to reporters breaking news. How do those get tossed aside when Deadspin or other popular Web sites that don't even pretend to care about journalistic integrity manufacture "news" on someone else's camera phones?

I understand the argument that what Jones said was of public interest. He ripped his ex-coach, suggesting that a primary reason for his hiring of Parcells was to get the new stadium funded. He criticized Tebow (although plenty of NFL scouts question Tebow's NFL pedigree, and Jones mostly said Tebow had no place in Dallas).

Hey, I'm extremely glad that I don't make daily decisions for a newspaper or TV news organization as to what's news and what's gossip. I would make a lot of bad calls, I have no doubt.

Local media were all over the board. One TV station led the news with it; two ignored it completely. Channel 8 went with the video but permitted anchor Dale Hansen to issue a strong disclaimer (insert two hands clapping here).

I just think we made the wrong call, even if the story was downplayed on the inside of the sports section.

Let those who have an interest in this video find it elsewhere. That's OK if some other site gets the hits for a day. The next big story is never more than 24 hours away.

I know what people are capable of saying in bars. I know what I have said while standing around bars.

Sometimes you speak the unvarnished truth. And sometimes you just talk out your backside. And a lot of times the next morning you have no recollection of those statements that seemed like such clever pronouncements at the time.

So I don't care what Jones said, and the NFL has given no indication that it will investigate the matter.

It wasn't something they necessarily taught at the University of Texas journalism school, but a lot of us learned how to use bars as information-gathering centers many years ago. It was a springboard, a place to begin to get a feel for a story, not somewhere to conduct surreptitious recordings.

There's much less of this type of communication between reporters and players or, in this case, owners these days.

People either fear the camera phones or, depending upon one's level of fame, just don't want to put up with the fans' scrutiny.

I heard it said several times today that a public figure such as Jerry Jones should know better in this era. And I hate that opinion.

I give Jerry credit – to the extent that he has considered his options here – for deciding that he's not going to accept the "well, that's the kind of world we live in" excuse.

When the world becomes a slightly more dangerous place, some people add six locks to their doors, the latest in alarm systems and a loaded gun in the dresser while never going out at night.

Others decide they aren't going to live that way. They refuse to accept new rules and are willing to face the consequences.

Jones has made bigger, bolder statements in bars before, including one that eventually led to his parting ways with coach Jimmy Johnson (although Johnson had one foot out the door already).

But at those 1994 NFL owners' meetings, Dallas Morning News reporters Rick Gosselin and Ed Werder met with Jones the next day to get him on the record following what had been accepted as an off-the-record discussion the night before.

That's how things were done. Maybe it wasn't perfect, but there were rules that both sides mostly understood.

The rules are gone. Now anybody with a cocktail in one hand and a hidden camera phone in the other can make news and get it in newspapers and on Web sites all around the country.

Some might see that as a way to open doors to more journalists.

I see it as justification for public figures, fearful of the modern consequences, to slam the doors on those of us with notepads or microphones once and for all.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Please don't make statements with no basis in fact at all. I have never seen anything about Parcells overruling anybody in the selection of Ware over another player.

The Cowboys have on balance drafted better recently than when Parcells was in place.

Al Johnson, Jacob Rogers, Stephen Peterman, Julius Jones, Marcus Spears, Bobby Carpenter, Anthony Fasano. All of these players were taken with premium draft picks (1-3). I assume Bill Parcells made the call on these guys just like he did on the players that could actually play football (Ware, Witten, and Newman). I would contend Newman is only a slightly above average corner on the whole.

I see only mixed, average results on the top round picks for Bill Parcells in Dallas. Dallas could have had a young OLine and not had to buy a bunch of free agents if Parcell's scouting department at the time could evaluate offensive linemen.

Anthony Spencer, Felix Jones, Mike Jenkins, and Marty Bennett have been the 1st and 2nd rounders over the last three years. These players will contribute a lot more to the Cowboys than a lot of the the guys above. Spencer was considered an All-Pro level player at season end (by Peter King), Felix Jones rushed for the 2nd most yards in a Playoff game by a Cowboy ever against Phil. Mike Jenkins is a much better corner than Terrance Newman right now and Marty B has the ability to be a star.

If these players reflect "awful drafting" what would you call some of the guys selected in the Parcells era? Worse than terrible?

Parcells has a bunch of apologists in the media for some reason. I don't get it.

Looking for where I read that right now. I think it was in the most recent edition of ESPN the magazine, basically they rated all the teams GMs and said the Cowboys were still living off of Parcells picks. I could be wrong (I'm not a Cowboys fan) but the article made it seem like Jones drafting recently has been bad.

Bradie James, Jason Hatcher, Canty, Jay Ratliff, etc - all Parcells picks. Not to mention bringing in offensive genius Payton who found Romo, and Parcells groomed him. Spencer and Jenkins look like great 1st round picks, but after that not much. Felix was a no brainer pick who's hurt a lot and Marty B is a lazy fuck who hasn't shown he can do anything but occassionally block. Wade/Jerry have done an awful job picking after round 1 and last years draft may have been the worst in a long time. Jerry is a dumb ass who can't see that he's still living off Parcells finds.

Don't read anything from ESPN the magazine if you want accurate information. The majority of Bill Parcells premium picks in Dallas (rounds 1-3) DID NOT MAKE IT IN THE NFL. Nobody wants to acknowledge this.

George Young built the roster Parcells coached in NY - the Giants.

Parcells always talks about shopping for the groceries, but a lot of what he buys is stale. Bill was a good coach in his time, but by the time he got to Dallas he was worn out.

Jason Hatcher is a part time player - Canty, Ratliff, and James were picked in the fourth round and beyond. Not premimum draft picks. I was talking about premimum picks (Rds 1-3). Sean Payton was held back as a play caller by Parcells in Dallas, plus he did not have a QB as Romo was not allowed to play until 2006 - after Payton left.

You don't know if the players from last years draft can play or not. The top two picks got injured and missed either the entire season or half of the season. They also had no first or second round pick - due to the Williams trade (a big mistake as we all know in hindsight). Bennett would show a lot more if he did not have Jason Witten in front of him. He's immature and that may hold him back, but if he got all the reps in Dallas he would be a very good player. Jones is a home run hitter and showed it. He replaced Barber (who may be done).

All of those guys I mentioned above were 1st 2nd or third round picks. Several are no longer in the league. The rest are mediocre (outside of Ware, Witten, and maybe Newman). If Parcells had taken care of business better on rounds 1-3 from 03-06, the Cowboys may have won a few more playoff games than they have. Teams have to be productive on rounds 1-3. Jerry got three years out of Parcells as a coach and personnel man. He basically had to be begged back to return in 2006. His draft pick production that year showed he had no interest in Dallas long term. Then he ran back to New Jersey.

I'll give Parcells some credit for getting the team out of the doldrums as a coach, but he did NOT do a great job as a personnel guy in Dallas. Too many misses with his premium picks. Sorry. Average at best.

You made my point for me. All Wade/Jerry can hit on are 1st rounders. You need to find value and good players in the later rounds to be successful because that's where most of your picks are. Parcells was good at finding guys who can contribute in round 2 and beyond that are making up the backbone of the team. Jerry can't find shit past round one. First pick of the 4th on Stephen fucking suck ass aggie bitch McGee? Seriously? Second rounder on the laziest mofo TE we've had in a long time? Bennett got time last year, the Cowboys ran a lot of double or even tripple TE sets, and would have run more except Bennett sucked and wouldn't beat his man or catch the fucking ball. That's why they started going a lot more to John Phillips at the end of the season and playoffs because Bennett sucked. How can Phillips have a productive year while Bennett doesn't and it's due to opportunities? That's a bullshit excuse. BTW, Phillips was the only pick last year that did anything worth a shit and actually looks to be a solid NFL player. Out of 12 draft picks.

Question - Can you name all of the productive second round draft picks Parcells drafted? Name one. I don't think you can.
Name all the productive third round picks made from 2003 - 2006. Answer. Jason Witten.

You see, blowing almost all of the second or third picks in a four year span meant you didn't pick a bunch of guys who could have been potential stars right now.

Tashard Choice can play (fourth round).
Doug Free can play (fourth round).
The wide receiver from Virginia (Olgetree - a free agent).
Nick Folk was a late pick who made the Pro Bowl before an injury totally messed him up.

Dallas has had to buy an offensive line in free agency (Davis, Columbo, the LG from Detroit) because of the blown offensive line selections in rounds two and three for three years in a row. They got nothing out of Johnson, Rodgers and Peterman - two seconds and one thirds there. That's all on Bill. Dallas missed out on all the players who could actually play football in the 2nd and 3rd most of those years.

It's great that Dallas hit on Jay Ratliff in the later round guys on occasion. The playmakers come from rounds 1,2,3 for the most part.

Last year's draft looks weak now, but Jason Williams, Brandon Williams, and Brewster will hopefully have a much bigger impact this year.

BTW WD, do you even like the Cowboys, or are you just stirring up stuff?

Fair enough, they've both made bad picks and Parcells definitely missed on the early rounds but hit more on later while Wade has been backwards. IMO though we have about 15 yrs of drafts post Jimmy that JJ has been pretty shitty on for the most part. Now that I think about it, how do we know what JJ's influence was during the Parcells drafts?

I spend a lot more time in the Spurs section honestly, so I did not know about your NFL fandom - sorry. Anyway, I think the Cowboys management (Jerry and Stephen) are trying to listen to their scouting department more in recent years and take the best players they can. I would agree that 1995 to 2010 has not been good on the whole for the Dallas draft, but I think things recently have gotten better.

The 2006 draft - Parcells last, just irritated me to no end. He took a player in the first round who had the same agent as he did. Carpenter was also the son of one of his former Giant players. Fasano was a Notre Dame guy and that often leads to failure in recent years - I think Big Bill was trying to find the next Mark Bavaro. That draft told me that Parcells was in charge of the proceedings given who was taken.

I think and hope that with Stephen Jones' influence the Cowboys will not make as many mistakes in personnel (we all know Jerry is NOT selling the team, so there is no point in wishing for that). SJ had pull in the decision to get rid of older, less productive players like TO and Greg Ellis and go with some younger guys. I'm not sure this would have happened four or five years ago.

Let's hope for a productive draft on Thurs - Sat and get some good guys from Round One to Seven.

Wouldn't take Tebow in the third? But he had no problem taking that A&M QB in the 4th. I don't even thing that guy saw more than 10 plays :lol

The A&M quarterback played on a team that sucked, dealt with injuries throughout his college career, but Stephen McGee is still a much better athlete than Tebow. He owned him on the 40-yard dash and bench press. Not to mention the wonderlic told everybody who the smarter quarterback is.

Tim Tebow is a winner, yes. And so was Ryan Leaf. You know who beat Leaf for Heisman? Charles Woodson and Peyton Manning. Game set match.
