So after 42 years of marriage, my grandparents are calling it quits and getting a divorce. Is this odd to anyone else?

It would seem pretty normal to me. I don't know if I could put up with my wife's shit for 42 years and vice versa.

I suppose after 42 years, they are just fed up with trying to keep it together.

It probably didnt help that they were swingers back in the 80's.

Are they big fans of Lost? Maybe they'll get back together 4, 8, 15, 16 or 23 years from now.

I can top that one. My grandparents lived in a small town of about 100 people back in the 40's along with my grandmothers brother and his wife. My grandfather and my great aunt (my grandmothers brothers wife) started getting it on and divorced their respective spouses. So as a kid I always visited my "Grandfather and my Aunt" who lived together.

Niggs getting divorced? Doesn't sound odd at all to me.

Could it be because of financial reasons? I'm guessing they are on SS, and sometimes people make out better if they divorce and just "live" together.

Grandpa probably got him some Viagra. Soon after that stuff came on the market divorce rates among the "senior population" (50-80 year-olds) skyrocketed.

Well my grandparents got divorced before I was born, though I'm sure it'd freak me the hell out.

Well at least they are alive. My grandparents died back in the 80's, in their 80's.

My parent's divorced after 44 years. I think some couples just run out of reasons to stay together.

That's what I was about to say. I have one living grandparent, and her time is long overdue.

In any case, I think it will become more and more common for middle-to-older age people to get divorced. Many marriages are held together by children. Once those children are grown, splitting up becomes a little easier. Plus divorce is less of a taboo than it used to be, and people are living longer than they used to. A healthy 60 year old can have many years of quality life left. Why spend those years with somebody you no longer love?

Yes. Anything beyond 30 years, you just wonder what they were waiting for.
