View Full Version : Why are mav fans/sports radio people in Dallas so scared?

I've been listening the last couple days to hear the crazy stuff going out there, and all I'm hearing is a bunch of people trying to convince themselves that the mavs will win - a sign of pure insecurity. One host this morning was going on and on about how the Spurs were the 3 seed and the mavs 6 last year but mav won, and this year mav is 2 and Spurs are 7 so that means mav got better while Spurs got worse so mav should win easily. WTF is up with these people? Why so insecure and worried?

please dont tell me you were listenin to the fan. that is the worst sports station ever created. The discussion on thurs was "pop wanted the mavs, so what do you think about that, mavs fans?"

the smart fans in dallas listen to the ticket. There may be a lot of screwing around on that station that has nothing to do with sports but you arent gonna get those stupid discussions that do nothing but try to fire up listeners. There has been a decent amount of respect for the spurs as far as the ticket discussions have been concerned.

Isn't that like calling the kettle black?

Secondly, Radio personalities don't really know basketball well... the guy who actually calls the games sees enough basketball to know what he's talking about, but the other people are just drumming up ratings.

Lastly, comparing last year's spurs team and trying to draw a correlation is just ignorant of the facts.

Spurs 09-10 (vs 08-09 in order of importance)
+ Manu healthy
+ Faster team
+ Duncan healthy
- Team Defense not what it was
+ Better rebounding
- Parker not 100%
+ younger supporting cast (ie. better bench)

Just take a look at game 5 of last years playoffs:
http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=290428024 (http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=290428024)

Maybe it will renew some of your memories of last year. Both Bowen and Finley were taking minutes and not producing ANYTHING. Big men not named Duncan took a combined 9 shot attempts. Spurs shot 3 of 16 from behind the arc, while the mavs were 10 of 20! Spurs were out rebounded and shot only 63% from the FT line(mainly Duncan's poor ft shooting).

Spurs were living and dying by the 3 last year.

The big differences is having Manu to break down defenses, a big man that can roll to the basket (read: improved team speed ....ie. Blair) opposite Duncan and most importantly someone who can grab an offensive board!

Which gets to the heart of the matter:

Spurs this year > Mavs this year ?

They are scared because we have a bear in a man suit playing power forward off the bench and he's hungry.

Playing in a series as the favorite is a totally different monster..Has the mavs ever been the higher seed when these 2 have played?

I think way more Mavs fans are blindly over confident than scared.

Most Mavs fans are truly horrible at knowing how basketball works. They just see what has happened recently and think this series will be a direct continuation of it.

Maybe because that is their opinion? The Mavs are favored to win the series.

Why are you listening to Dallas radio anyway? Oh, I forgot the only good radio stations in San Antonio are "102.8 el rancho"

yeah, just because stations in dallas predict dallas to win doesn't make them blind or stupid, they're just biased. It's not like San Antonio stations would do differently if the situation were reversed. I want to see them lose too, but unjustly bashing them just makes more trolls come out of the woodwork.

It is called 'appropriate fear'. If the roles were reversed, I would be worried about my team not coming out with a sense of urgency.

They know this series could be tight and every game matters. Nothing wrong with a little negative influence to piss off your team and stick to the opposition.

The one I quoted was from the fan and it cracked me up. I've been flipping between all 3 and it's been pretty similar. A couple of ticket guys picked the Spurs, but several others including that annoying guy with the little boy voice in the afternoons were saying shit just as dumb as the fan guy. It's like they don't realize Manu, the most important Spurs player in the series, didn't play last year. It's been entertaining, and I can't wait til the Spurs wax these bitches so I can hear the meltdowns.

I've been a Cubs fan for 25 years. I know all about rooting for a team that doesn't win shit. I also don't act like a retard whenever they play a division rival or make the playoffs. So, no, I wouldn't be insecure if I was a fan of that shitty team. I'm a fan of another shitty team and I'm not insecure about it.

Dallas fans, on the other hand, might be a whole different group of douchenozzles.

As a Spur fan living in Dallas, I can say that the Ticket is about as partial as you'll get, though they are big Mav fans, as would be expected by any local radio station.

I won't go so far as to say Mav fans don't know anything about basketball. They've had a very successful team in many ways, they just haven't had what it takes to win a title.

I also feel a little for them because they get so hyped by a team that performs pretty well in the regular season, only to have things go south every year in the playoffs. Dallas has had a sports jinx for since the early 90s and people here are desperate for Dirk to win them a title. He's got about a two year window to do that before he starts his decline and they drift into mediocrity.

Scared? No. However, most intelligent Mavs fans are not blatant homers. There is a healthy respect for the Spurs organization and everyone is well aware of what SA is capable of (Note: Capable doesn't translate into what they "will do"). Should be a great match-up and an entertaining series. Just anxious for it to get started already.

Not here to talk all the trash. i think the Spurs have a damn good team and can be really scary for the Mavs, so i'm not assuming its gonna be a cakewalk. I respect the Spurs the are a great organization but i do think the Mavs will win in 6 or 7. But who knows anything can happen. With Ginobili healthy it makes yall that much more dangerous. But i think we have an edge in the series because the Spurs have absolutley nobody that can come close to stopping Dirk and the mavs have 3 guys they can throw at Ginobili to keep him contained so i think that gives us the edge along with homecourt. It will be a fun series, both teams are hungry. good luck to yall and Go Mavs!!

dallas has to be scared coz all the spurs are healthy and they have to face a well rested manu and timmy....yeah they shud be scared definitely....spurs loss to dallas last season was bcoz we didnt have manu....dallas played all players on the april 14th game and still struggled...put timmy and manu in that game...dallas has zero chances of winning...

WTF are you talking about?

the Spurs struggled to win 50 and get the 7th seed while the Mavs won the divison and are the #2 seed...not to mention that Dallas has won 8 out of the last 10 against San Antonio

why the **** would Dallas be "scared" of this year's Spurs team? I expect this series to be tight, and it actually might go 7, but Dallas will win because they are the better team and have home court advantage

All I want to say is its all about perspective. Every person on here (who is a Spurs fan) feels the spurs will win. Every Mavs fan thinks the Mavs will win. That is why this is such a great matchup. It can go either way, just depends on who brings it. Are we saying that you guys thinking the Spurs will win is a sign of insecurity? That is a pretty thoughtless statement. I, as a Mavs fan, could say your statements are signs of insecurity since your confident the Spurs will win. So I am having difficulty understanding your line of thought.

I do like the fact that the Spurs PGs are not healthy and our recent history against you guys. I think it will be a fun series to watch and I can't wait for tomorrow and I will give credit to the Spurs where it's due.

But see this is where its different. They have every right to believe their team will win it. Just as we do. I just don't agree with the assumption that we are deluding ourselves about us winning. We have everything pointing to us winning. We have earned the right being the 2nd seed to believe that. To hear someone say we are scared because we are confident is a stretch. That's what I was getting at.

Do you think any OKC fans are saying it sucks that we're gonna lose against the Lakers? No, they look at all the positives that their team has shown them through the regular season and hope for the best. Just as the OP of this thread is (whether he admits it or not) and just as us Mavs fans are (should there be an unexpected hiccup, there I go being a Mavs fan again). Either way enjoy the luxury of having such a great rivalry continue for as long as it has and may the best team win! GO MAVS!

Like you said, if I was a Thunder fan right now, I'd be CONVINCED that we were going to beat the Lakers, some way some how. But what Spurs fan gotta realize is that the last two times the Mavs and Spurs have met up with each other in the playoffs, the Mavs finished off the series on San Antonio's floor. Head to head, the Mavs are the better team.

True it is all about perspective. I'm not a a big Spurs or Mavs fan, I'm a Nets fan, but got to root for a couple other teams if your team isn't in the playoffs I root for Spurs because I just like them better, but from readind on different sites I've seen Mav fans thinking they will win and Spur fans thinking they will win which is great for both fans doing that, I do find it funny though that more Mav fans think it will be so easy for Mavs to win. I mean if you look at last year Mavs were lower seed and won vs Spurs just because they are a higher seed doesn't mean they will win, most likely Mavs will win, but prob won't be easy, heck Dirk could suck this year for all we know even though he was great last year there is always a chance something will happen and go wrong with a player or team
