The rap world is mourning news that groundbreaking rapper and Gang Starr co-founder Guru has died of cancer. He was 43.

Guru, born Keith Elam, died Monday after a year-long battle with the disease. The rapper had suffered a heart attack on Feb. 28 then slipped into a coma.

Guru became famous after teaming up with DJ Premier in group Gang Starr in 1985. The duo released six studio albums between 1989 and 2003 and became famous for making "conscious rap" before splitting under acrimonious circumstances.

Since then Guru had released a series of "Jazzmataz" albums where he teamed up with classic jazz, soul and hip hop artists.

There's a rumor going around that Premier has come up with a letter supposedly written by Guru that turns over not only all of the rights to their last project together but also guardianship of Guru's son to Premier. Just a rumor right now, but I have to wonder; when would he have found time in his busy coma schedule to come out of it and write a letter? :lol

Actions have reactions, don't be quick to judge
You may not know the hardships people don't speak of
It's best to step back, and observe with couth
For we all must meet our moment of truth

I don't understand how music like this never took ahold of our culture like Ke$ha or Britney or Eminem or whatever crap is being beamed into our cars and houses...this is the real deal, and it's just ONE track.

Rest in peace, Guru.

Damn. RIP to a legend lost way too young. I didn't really feel his stuff when I was younger, but I have become a big fan of his work the last couple of years.
