View Full Version : The humorous side of my sisters death

As executor I get to clean up the mess and she was BURIED in credit card debt. I couldn't believe it...and they kept approving her for new cards and raising her limits. I'm talking like 80K...Last year she called all of them and told them she was dying of cancer and wanted to work out a rate reduction and settlement. The ALL told her they weren't interested and jacked her rate to the legal max, like 30%. She kept paying the minimum balances on time and they kept raising her limits and she kept using them. She didn't work for over a year and would literally get cash out of one card to pay the minimum on another.

She was single with no heirs basically no estate and I now get the pleasure of calling them all and telling them they are well and truly fucked. :lol

I opened one bill and in the "truth in lending" section it told her that if she kept paying the minimum balance and didn't use the card again it would take 38 years to pay off the balance...:lol

sorry to hear about your sister, CC.

Thanks. I'm sure there are worse ways to go. She was basically happy, not in pain, and had some GREAT drugs. As the cancer spread in her brain she got just funny as hell. Her long term memory was good almost to the end but short term was real flaky and she was goofy as hell. She loved to shop and wanted to go shopping every day. I would literally push her down the aisle in the wheelchair as she randomly piled shit in the shopping cart...she would buy it, I'd take her home and then hide the bags. Then I would take all the shit back the next day. I did this every day for a couple of weeks. I just tried not to pick on the same stores...:lol

Hats off to you for taking care of your sister during her final days. Sorry to hear about your sister, CC. This situation is something we can actually agree on though, because I have encountered a similar situation with my dying friend. Everyone thought he was well off, doing just fine, but since we had to take care of everything for him during his month in hospital, we recently found that he, just like your sister, was buried in credit card debt to about 8 different cards = 180K. He had the assets to cover it, and recently sold his taxi plate and retired all the debt, and had a little left over to put in the bank, but it was a massive shock to us to find out that he was so far in debt.

How can they jack up the interest like that? Effectively, that gives banks the power to bankrupt people even when they could have worked their way out of the hole. That's what you get when you deregulate banking.

As for the credit card companies: was she the one actually making all these purchases or was someone using her card to do it. If the latter, it is probably not a good idea to brag about it online. The original debt from her illness is understandable, but purposefully running up debt for fun on a dying person's credit card creates issues- legal and moral.

She was semi-functional right up till the day before she died. The big time steroids she was taking to keep the swelling in her brain down put her on a shopping high like she was mainlining meth. I'm STILL getting crazy shit in the mail she ordered on E-bay. The best one so far was some microwaveable bags used to sterilize breast milk pumps. I opened the box and was like...WTF????

LOL

before my sis died she had an acquaintance that was a realtor that dropped by to "visit"...she just happened to bring brochures etc. for her business and also brought another woman with her to make suggestions for "staging" the house for the sale. I thanked them for visiting but told them my sis was not legally able to enter into any agreements and that nothing would be done with the condo till she was gone.

I just received a "staging report" and a bill for $200 from the other lady. It was printed on her stationary but it was just a generic "to do" list of recommendations like you could find in the real estate section of the Sunday paper.

When I reminder her that I had not hired her to do a staging report she told me that my sister wanted one and she seemed "mentally OK" when they discussed it. She very angrily told me that "she was a professional" and she "expected to get paid for her work". This was after she earlier told me just how much she had loved my sister and how long they had been "friends".

LOL. I thanked her for visiting my sister in her last days since they had been friends for so long and suggested she talk to the realtor about her $200 since I sure as hell didn't hire her.

I don't think she likes me.

Raising a dying persons' rates knowing they don't have the income to pay even the minimums? Seriously, can these people be any more evil? You'd have to be completely heartless, lack all ruth, and be without a soul to hit these people when they are down and dying. It's like health insurance claims people... Wow what assholes. $2000 is a drop in the bucket of what they'd be paying had she opted for full care, as you said. You should bill them for the hours of round the clock nursing care you provided.

BCBS is the same racket that billed my sister-in-law for an ambulance ride following her accident, because she could have driven herself to the hospital. First they had me fax them a copy of the will naming me as executor. Then they told me they got "so many faxes" that they wouldn't be able to find it and "get it in the system" for 24-48 hours and to call back then after they were authorized to talk to me. I went ahead and gave them all the details I was calling about and suggested they get it fixed before I called back because I WOULD SO SUE THEIR ASS if they didn't.

:lmao

Awesome.

This isn't so funny. I have a letter from Blue Cross Blue Shield specifically approving the hospice provider we used from back when this all started. I just got a statement from them that says of the $2000+ hospice bill they are paying $35. WTF???? I am about to go to war with those cocksuckers. She probably saved those bloodsuckers $50,000 by choosing not to do more radiation/chemo once it went to her brain. Damn.

Often those bills aren't really "bills" you have to pay.

What is billed to BC/BS is what the hospice WANTS to charge BC/BS. Often what is ultimately paid is MUCH less.

There also may be deductibles and copays in her policy that you probably don't know about.

He should at least return everything that has not been used and is returnable.

That would be the ethical thing.

Realistically, the credit card companies themselves share a very large portion of the responsibility for their losses.

They could have simply stopped lending her money, as that would have been the fairly responsible thing to do to protect their business interests.

Of course that would have initiated a new line of ethical conundrum, i.e. denying a way for a dying person to pay needed bills.

Kind of a damned if you do, and damned if you don't situation for them, not that I feel an ounce of pity for any credit card issuer.

I agree RandomGuy, credit card companies should be more responsible also. To my understanding she called and tried to work it out with them? I mean did they assume she won't be able to pay it off otherwise, so another person would have to pay it off for her? That's what it seems to me.

Also I just think everyone needs to learn to live within your means. That's ultimate responsiblity.
