That was wild...I had a tricked out Jeep Grand Wagoneer at the time...loaded everyone up and went cruising...the snow was so deep the town looked deserted...a lot of roads didn't even have tracks on them...I grabbed my snow skis and went skiing at 410/10 on that long slope that was there before they tore it up remodeling to interchange...

I wasn't into furniture at the time. Were you still in your gay decorator phase then? Not that there is anything wrong with that.

CC, I popped your wife's cherry on a sofa sleeper in the back of the store when I was 14. :)
No seriously, my mom worked there when I was a kid, she also worked at Frost Bros.

Ok...before the city built the alamodome there was a street on the east side that was known for its prostitutes...and the city basically ignored it...it was the classic stereotype you see in the movies...the pimps in their tricked out cadillacs...the black girls in their hooker outfits coming out in the street and trying to wave you down...when they built the alamodome the city shut it down...
what was the name of the street?
SAmikeyp

There was a video game arcade across the street from Churchill HS in the early '80's where Frost Bank is now. It had an unusual name...anyone?

a funny note about the San Pedro Drive In discussed a few pages back...
It had three screens, two of which could be seen by cars driving by on either San Pedro, Bitters, or West Avenue.
The third screen was strategically positioned and fenced so that it could not be viewed from the ground in any direction. Consequently they showed the "normal" movies on the other two screens but usually showed porn on the "private" screen...
ironically this "private" screen could be viewed perfectly by planes landing at San Antonio International Airport at night...the first view of San Antonio many tourists got in the late 60's and 70's was hard core porn right out the left window of the airplane as they landed...
Cosmic
I grew up around the intersection of Heimer/Bitters and could see the screens from my roof. I don't think the one screen you mention was always fenced (I saw "Fritz The Cat" from my roof), I vaguely remember them putting up a fence for the screen when I was in elementary school. The drive in was a lot of fun to go to. I remember seeing "Doc Savage: The Man Of Bronze", "Go Tell The Spartans", and others there.

No not Homotel, that is not a good name for a respectable area of town CC. :)
The answer is Granada Royal Hotel. I worked there in 1982 as a waiter.
Jimcs50
08-10-2004, 04:46 PM
CC, funny story about that San Pedro Drive in. My wife's mom and daughter in law took my wife and her two neices to that drive in when they were 9, 5 and 3 to go see what they thought was a kids movie. It was Called Grimm's Fairey Tales for Adults and was R rated with a lot of nudity. After a few minutes of adult fairey tales, they realized their mistake and left red faced as fast as possible. Her mom used to talk about that story years later and always wondered what the people at the entrance thought of them for taking little kids to that dirty movie. :rollin
I wonder if the tales were titled something like Little Jack Horny, Peter Peter Pussy Eater, Jack be nimble Jack be (not too)quick, etc...
SAmikeyp
08-10-2004, 05:13 PM
yes...between it being the Granada Royal and the Embassy Suites, it was briefly called the "Hometel" you were a waiter their in '82 Jim? Then we probably met....I was one of the neighborhood kids who would sneak in and eat off the buffet! :spin
Jimcs50
08-10-2004, 06:00 PM
Mikey, actually the buffet was separate from the restaurant dining room, which was where I worked. The restaurant was an upscale dining room with a pricey menu...we did not let kids in there. :)
SAmikeyp
08-10-2004, 06:05 PM
ahh...you was one of them their fancy-fied waiters! :p
Jimcs50
08-10-2004, 06:55 PM
You betcha Mikey. :)
I used to make good money there, but also had a great time working there. I used to go into the walkin freezer and smoke weed with couple of waitresses after it slowed down in the night. It was a great way to mellow out at the end of the workshift....also it probably made the steaks taste better after being "smoked" in their frozen state. :)

Would that be the hellaciously entertaining "Let's Go To The Races"?
We won quite a bit of Handy Andy's cash once we figured out that if you were in a checkout line 30 minutes before the show aired, they handed out BIG FAT STACKS of the game cards just to get rid of them.
After that, they came out with an equally entertaining game based on Monday Night Football...

CC. had to go to that freaking station a couple of times. Selma used to be a freaking speed trap you would not believe.
Jim, I KNEW better than to speed in Selma...it was famous NATIONWIDE for its speedtraps...they worked I-35 24/7 and would nail people for even a mile over the limit...AAA had warnings out about it...Playboy had an article about it...it was just obscene...for years Selma didn't have any city tax of any kind because of all the revenue they got from their little scam...It finally got to be such a nationwide embarrassment that the State finally shut them down...as I heard it they threatened them with TEXDOT closing all the I-35 entrances/exits to Selma....
CosmicCowboyXXX
08-11-2004, 12:40 PM
The funniest speed trap I ever saw was in a little town on Hwy 90 between San Antonio and Uvalde...during hunting season the traffic would be really heavy Thursday-Monday with hunters...many coming from as far as Dallas, Houston, or even Louisiana...all were speeding and most were drinking...
there is a little town called D'Hanis that if you blink, you miss...but the speed limit dropped to 35 for about 400 yards.
The local judge cut a deal with an unemployed cowboy and they started speedtrappin D'Hanis during hunting season on the halves...it was funny as hell...he just had a badge, a radargun, and a Starsky and Hutch red magnetic clamp on light (and a ticketbook of course)...
He drove an old beat up mustard yellow pickup with hay bales in the back...he would back in in front of the cafe and shoot radar both ways...he didn't even have a uniform...just wranglers, cowboy shirts, cowboy hat, and a badge...
I was lucky enough that I saw him on the first weekend as he popped the guy just in front of me...they ran that scam for a couple of years and must have made a friggin fortune...most of the tickets were for like 85 in a 35...
Jimcs50
08-11-2004, 02:23 PM
The worst stretch of speed traps is betw Harlingen and So Padre of Hw 100. The speed limit goes from 65 to 40 in 1/8 of a mile practically and if you miss the one sign, you are screwed...I have fallen victim to that.
Spurminator
08-11-2004, 02:42 PM
They need to shut down the Corsicana trap on 45. It's not a speed trap, because it's perpetually under construction, and it takes 2 hours to go 4 miles.
Meanwhile they have 800 patrolmen waiting for anyone who dares to veer off the highway onto the access road.
... the name of the disco that preceeded The Palace Strip club on 410 betw Starcrest and Perrin Beitel?
that would be the last national bank !
i should remember that place as that was where i "encountered" my first older woman experience

Very good Taz....you go to the head of the class.
PS. So that was you I chased out of my car when I caught a couple fucking in it at 2 am. :p
damn, jimcs50 ...
i thought there was somebody watching, but i, always thought it was her ex-husband trying to learn what it was that he failed to "give" her !
no, seriously, though, it, actually was around midnight (on the dancefloor) when she whispered in my ear that she wanted to "ditch" this place, and take me back to her apt, but, evidently she couldn't wait, so she proceeded to "take matters into her hands" in the parking lot in the back !

The name of the other Disco was Burgandy Woods.
burgundy woods was further up loop 410, just b4 you get to starcrest, and not where it was originally suggested as where that other strip club is, across the loop from the palace !
it was a pretty nice disco, as it contained two floors, w/ 2 dance floors, and you could look down on the lower level from the upper level !
it, also had some pretty damn sexy waitresses !!!:eyebrow
Jimcs50
08-16-2004, 10:26 AM
Yes, Burgandy Woods was cool with the top floor looking down on the dance floor with the colored lights in the floor.
since everybody appears to be concerned with the disco nightclubs of the late 70s - 80s, does anybody remember the one that was about a block off of the access road on loop 410 between nacogdoches & broadway, on the same block where there used to be the crystal baking co. ?
Jimcs50
08-16-2004, 10:23 PM
Yes, forgot the name though. Also there was one on Wurzbach where there is a strip club now too.
the one on wurzbach rd was called the grand hotel, and the one between broadway & nacogdoches was called sugar's !
and for all those that frequent the current "gentleman's" establishment with the same name, no it wasn't the same type of club !
Jimcs50
08-17-2004, 10:02 AM
ah yes, The Grand Hotel, that was a nice place to have drinks with friends because it was not as crowded and noisy as others.
since nobody could figure out where the original graham central station was located, i'll, kindly offer up a hint ....
it ws located on the street that's named after a very prominent city in texas !
