Coming into the playoffs I was worried about Dice and thought he was done.

SO FAR in the playoffs we've seen the Antonio McDyess from Detroit. He's making me eat shit right now. Keep it up Dice!

Heck, basically everyone on the team played well this evening.

He was great. Playoff McDyess was one of the biggest x-factors that I cited. If he keeps it up the Spurs have a legit shot.

McDyess was big in a lot of phases. Rebounding, scoring, hustle plays, offensive rebounds, defense. And RJ played well also.

His patient defense on Dirk was / may come be instrumental in these games. He is playoff tested and not nearly as lost as the first half of the season. Despite looking lost, he actually showed signs of good D on Nowitzki in the beginning of the regular season. Back in November Dirk shot 9-27 in a game that McDyess logged 29 minutes 45 seconds and primarily covered Dirk. That is what the Spurs should aim for - McDyess around 30 MPG.

Kamala
04-21-2010, 11:34 PM
Dice was huge tipping balls keeping them in play and playing calmly during that huge Mav run. Jefferson's explosion in the first half was more spectacular and quite frankly more shocking given his performance in game 1.

Besides Manu, the player that I feel can be the biggest x-factor in this series is McDyess. Having playoff McDyess walk out of the tunnel on Sunday evening would be huge for this team in so many areas. If he can hustle on the boards, knock down those open looks and make Dirk work like he did earlier this season it will take a lot of pressure off of everyone. If he wants to see the ring he has sought for so long he's gotta put his hand to the plow and not look back.

mcdyess defense was great today except that rotation 3 in the corner for terry was dumb of him but hes been on dirk this series and he did a great job today of not falling for dirks jump fakes and mcdyess had a hand in his face everytime and he was jumping straight up to block the shot except jumping into dirk like last game great game for dice

The jumper still isn't as automatic as I remember it, but we're now finally, at long last seeing the McDyess I remember seeing with the Pistons. His stout post defense and rebounding (particularly offensive) was huge.

It's becoming more and more apparent that, while he may have declined somewhat from last season (more likely is he was just playing above his head in the second half of last season), he was also pacing himself throughout the season. He admitted that playing is hard on his body at this point. As frustrating as he was a lot of games, him pacing himself was probably necessary, so that he could play at the level he's currently playing at.

Dice is a grizzled veteran and has earned the respect of the refs. He can get away playing Dirk tighter than Blair or Bonner. He has a crucial role to play in the coming games and I think his juices are just starting to flow now that the POs have begun ala Horry.

I am so on board the Dice Train. The Horry comparisons are warranted but there's something I find uncannily familiar about his play:

All the hustle plays and movement without the ball,

the way he works hard at things that don't show up in the stat box.

It was the tipout late in the 4th when it struck me...

This rugged yeoman is filling the void Fabricio Oberto left.

Besides defense it seems his priorities are extending offensive possessions and being in the right place at the right time. Sure, there are kinks to work out but he seems well on his way.

I agree with the Horry/McDyess comparison as of playoff performance right now. I just hope Dice doesn't start jackin up threes. :lol

We were all a bit surprised with the Haislip signing and the thinking at the time was he was going to be the answer to Dirk and other mobile bigs. Unfortunately that experiment didn't bear fruit and perhaps in Pop's mind a healthy Dice could suffice.

He is doing all the little things and I love it. During the season, he couldn't make a pass for his life...so far, through 2 games, hes done a good job at fixing that. He's been awesome.

This game gives me faith in if we play the Lakers, how we are going to handle their size. We just need to play with ferocity.

You have to like McDyess. He started out as a freakishly athletic scorer, but then injury forced him to remake his game into a much more blue collar player. And he did fine in last night's game.

That said, McDyess guarding Dirk is a mismatch that Dirk should exploit. I think last night was more Dirk mailing one in than McDyess playing great against him.

The guys I think were primarily responsible for last night's win were RJeff (the early offense and responding after being called out in game 1), Duncan for delivering down the stretch, and Manu for hitting timely 3s to hold the Mavs off during their fake run.

HarlemHeat37
04-22-2010, 06:27 PM
Well there's nothing McDyess can really do against Dirk, he can only give it his best, and that's what he did..there aren't many guys in the NBA that can guard Dirk 1 on 1 or in general..

I'm happy to eat crow. I thought Dice was mistake, but he seems to be an entirely different player so far in the post season.

Tonight was about players other than the Big 3 winning the game for us. Again, a year ago we couldn't have dreamed pulling out a win like this.

He's been playing this series as we thought he could, deflecting balls and spiking them and rebounding and even his jumper has been pretty good. He's like an old warrior that doesn't look like shit until it's time to fight, then he starts slaying bitches in every direction. Keep it up yo!!

McDyess has been a difference this whole series. He is finally looking like that guy I hated on the Pistons. And like Hill he was confident in his shot and in his play. I was hoping to see this guy earlier in the year but it's better late than never.

After cheerleading for the Dice signing all off-season, then watching Dice look old and disinterested for most of the regular season, I've been chewing my nails and staring at my shoes.

Little did I or anyone else know that he was simply playing possum and waiting for the Real Season, just like his should-be-HoF predecessor Big Shot Rob.

Here's to you, Dice, for finally coming through when it matters! :toast

Dice is to me one of the best players in the NBA in what he does. I learned to respect and love the guy when he played with Detroit against the Spurs. He was surely a headache back then. I think that now he understands his role on the court he will contribute even more. He's turning into a Robert Horry kind of player with timely plays and veteran IQ, he has a lethal mid range shot that is close to what Horry did from the 3-point line. When he hits those shots, it is much harder to beat the Spurs.

One thing I noticed tonight...McDyess was making most of his shots because he wasn't having that tiny hitch of hesitation that he's had in the past...I liked to see that, he was shooting with confidence...hope it continues :D
