I love it! I've started buying my small appliances in black, red, and stainless in the hopes that in a few years I'll have a kitchen I can remodel in those colors. :) Also, if you haven't thrown out that coffee pot yet, can I have it? :lol

Like the look - a suggestion and a question for you:

You might consider some indirect lighting in the area above the cabinets - install the lights on the top of the cabinet so that they can shine up on the wall / ceiling without being seen - would really add something extra.

How did you decide on the counter? I've been leaning towards using black soapstone (what they used to make science lab table tops out of - durable, non reactive and completely heat resistant) but the lighter color is a nice contrast.

Wow, it's gorgeous!

I'm amazed that anyone thinks it's 'meh' for 20K. Especially since he lives (if I recall correctly) in the DC area. I know people in SA are spoiled on cheap Mexican labor and low cost of living ,but in that area, 20K is beyond a bargain. I have a friend who lived in Fairfax County (near DC) and paid almost that much just in labor to re-do his kitchen. It was bigger than that one, but still. For the amount, new appliances, etc it's great.

It looks good!

I'm not too crazy about the appliances - but that's my feelings about US type appliances in general with the exception of the double door fridges :D

Love the lighting and wooden floor. I have nothing against the dark cabinets - good job on the steel handles.

CuckingFunt
04-23-2010, 05:43 PM
Same footprint, or did you expand? From the pictures I'd guess the former, but it's hard to tell.

Very nice, though. I, for one, like the backsplash. Especially the smaller tiles behind the sink (also glass?). The granite is nice, too, and the color of the wood floors, but I wouldn't have gone with either. I don't like wood in a kitchen and am thoroughly over granite. In my opinion (which is just opinion and not meant to take away from what I think is a lovely remodel), cork floors, poured concrete countertops, and more light in the sink area would make the whole thing perfection.

I've been watching HGTV like mad lately and it's making me wish I had something to remodel. I've recently fallen in love with ruby red CaesarStone for a kitchen counter:

I would like the backsplash with different counters or the counters with a simpler backsplash, but the two together is too much for me.

ShoogarBear
04-23-2010, 06:27 PM
I'm not feeling the backsplash either. I think it'd give me seizures after a while. I agree with the preference for a simple light tone, or one that match the countertops.

I like the dark wood though. Wait . . . that didn't sound right.

HGTV had Antonio Balatore (sp?) redo his house on a special and in the kitchen he put in a pretty cool alumminum backsplash made up of randomly sized rectangles of the metal - from a distance it looks like stainless steel but the detail is pretty cool when you get close to it. He used black granite counters with it but the red would look pretty amazing.

Pretty nice transformation. As you said everyone has their own taste, but it looks better than what it did before by far!

Focusing on the picture above, how did you leave your island in regards to that one last piece of wood holding up the end of your counter?

By the way, after looking at your FB pictures, I knew you must be located in MD/DC with the way your TH is laid out.
