Game 4 is bigger than Joey, the Spurs have a golden opportunity to "put the clamps" on the Mavs. I don't see them wasting that chance.

Is this a guess?

Yeah. Refs aren't announced until gameday. I could see it happening though.

Mavs: 1-16 with Danny in the playoffs
Spurs: Always getting screwed by Joey

Stern likes to play these mind games.

BillMc

Is this a guess?

I actually slightly misread this post by ESPN's Marc Stein:

"But there's lots for the Mavs to fix even if San Antonio's least favorite referee -- Joey Crawford -- is here to work Game 4."

My mistake, I thought it was a definite. Sorry. Still, Stein makes it sound likely.

Actually, Joey's venom is more specific: Dampier will be able to do whatever he wants to Tim on defense. I'd put the over/under on Tims FTAs at 3. He'll give calls to Manu and Tony, though. He doesn't hate the Spurs, just Tim.

I'd rather have him for game 5 in Dallas. For all of his ego and bitterness, he's unlikely to give one player on the home team more FTs than the entire road team.

If both of those things are true, it leaves only one possible chief for Game 4 -- Foster.

It also means that for Game 5 and Games 6 and 7, if they become necessary, the the odds are strong that Joey will be the crew chief; at the very least, assuming the Foster guess is correct, we know that Game 5's lead official will come from a pool consisting of today's chiefs.

They've always had alternates, but this year - for the first time that I can remember - the alternates are out on the floor before games. At the beginning of Game 2, there was a crowd shot on the FSSW feed in which you could see the alternate (Pat Fraher, I think) leaving the floor, too.

I don't mind Joey... he's a good ref when he keeps his personal emotions in check...

Getting Salvator out of the way early was nice.

Mavs complain a lot about Danny Crawford... but I think pretty much the sole reason that they don't do well with his ref crew is because he doesn't fall for all the dirk flail shenanigans on the jumpshots and dirk won't adjust and go to the basket...

The playoffs against the Lakers in 2008, I believe the Spurs would have evened up the series 2-2; down by 2 in the final seconds, Derek Fischer lands on Brent Barry... no call. The NBA later said a foul should have been called. The ref who was standing 10 feet away and should have called the foul? Joey Crawford.

Crawford should never be allowed to ref a Spurs game ever again after all the crap that he's been involved in with us, if for no other reason than to avoid the appearance of impropriety.

Yep... and you remember how all the Laker trolls kept insisting that it wasn't a foul, and that it wouldn't have made any difference? Then the league made one of its rare statements saying that it was a blown call. The difference between 3-1 and 2-2 is night and day.

The thing that made that call so bad was that the two players were basically isolated on the court, and were the obvious center of attention. Crawford either willfully decided to abort the rules, or he showed criminally piss-poor judgment. Either way, it should have reduced his value as a playoff official. To about zero.

Our playoff winning pct. with the Crawfords, Dick, and Javie is pretty damn good. I think it's close to .650 or so. I will try to compile numbers to backup my statement.

Some interesting stats from the NBAStuffer.com site:

1. Among all officials who've refereed at least 10 regular season games, Scott Foster has the highest number of called fouls per game at 43.8. In his 3 playoff games, this number has gone up to 50.3.
Conclusion: Expect a lot of whistles in this game.

2. During the regular season, Scott Foster officiated games saw the home team get whistled for 48.6 % of all fouls. In the playoffs, this number is now 51%.
Conclusion: No home cooking, especially in the post season where the road team has got the better deal so far

3. During the regular season, Scott Foster games saw an average point differential of +2.9 points for the home team. In 3 playoff games, this number is +3.3. As a comparison, Dick Bavetta has a differential of +1.
Conclusion: Nothing noteworthy, it doesn't look like he wants to keep the scores close.

I also don't think Joey's got Game 5 of this series.

There are 3 games tomorrow night (Monday) -- ORL @ CHA, ATL @ MIL, PRT @ PNX. Unless one of today's crew chiefs is going to work a highly-unusual playoff back-to-back, 3 of the 4 chiefs who worked yesterday will work those 3 games. That means, that McCutchen, J. Crawford, Rush, and Derosa. Of those 4, McCutchen, Derosa, and Rush have already worked games in the Phoenix/Portland series, leaving only Joey Crawford as: (a) having worked Saturday; and (b) not having worked a game in PNX/PRT. If form holds, Joey has that game.

That should mean that the crew chief for Game 5 of DAL/SA is one of Derosa, McCutchen, and Rush.

our playoff winning pct. is like .670 since pop

It's .619, according to basketball reference.

According to my count, since 2001, here is our playoff record with these refs:

Scott Foster (4-2 .667)
David Jones (1-4 .200)
Bob Delaney (13-7 .650)

And I guess the hate on Joey is warranted. We have lost 5 out of our last 7 playoff games when he's in the house. Overall, since '01, our record with him is (11-7 .611).

Some other notable refs and playoff won/loss since 2001:

James Capers (8-1 .889)
Greg Willard (9-2 .818)
Sean Corbin (4-1 .800)
Dan Crawford (18-6 .750)
Derrick Stafford (8-3 .727)
Dick Bavetta (17-7 .708)
Joe Forte (8-4 .667)
Steve Javie (13-7 .650)
Mark Wunderlich (7-4 .636)
Mike Callahan (14-8 .636)
Joe Derosa (10-6 .625)
Ken Mauer (8-5 .615)
Jim Clark (6-4 .600)
Tom Washington (6-4 .600)
Bernie Fryer (11-8 .579)
Monty McCutchen (6-5 .545)
Ron Garretson (10-9 .526)
Tony Brothers (2-2 .500)
Bill Spooner (4-4 .500)
Jack Nies (7-8 .467)
Bennett Salvatore (10-13 .435)
Eddie F. Rush (8-14 .364)
Tim Donaghy (1-2 .333)
Zach Zarba (0-1 .000)

Since '01, Salvatore and Rush have worked 45 Spurs playoff games between them and 3 together. If my count is right, in 42 playoff games, if one or both of these refs are on the court, we are (17-25 .405).

Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Harry Callahan
04-25-2010, 02:54 PM
Donaghy reffed 3 SA games from 2001 to 2007, and to top it off the W-L is 1-2. If this is accurate, how in the world could the conclusion that SA got preferential treatment ever be drawn as it relates to Donaghy?

Makes no sense.
