Well, that turned out the way I was afraid it would. Will definitely be an interesting off-season to see what Dirk decides to do. Mark is gonna be making numerous drunk phone calls to Dirk's voice mail professing his love and devotion.

Congrats to the Spurs.

Strangely enough, I've missed that overly anxious, can't-hardly-breathe feeling that comes with playoff basketball.

Huge, huge win. Spurs showed an amazing amount of grit to climb back from 15 down, and kept their composure down the stretch.

Breakout game by George Hill, he was absolutely unconscious tonight. And as predicted, tonight was Blair's X-factor game.

Dejuan Blair three offensive rebounds in 10 minutes. that was the decider, IMO.

Hill + Blair equal the future. They bridged the gap and Djuan looked like he started to FINALLY settle in to HIS game that he's been playing all season. Manu balanced out the poor shooting night with a timely 3 and some made FT's. Dice was our anchor in the 3rd.

Great win!! But what did Duncan do at the end? I'm not watching it.

1.5 seconds left on the clock, Dallas scores to leave them down 3.

Duncan threw a long inbound pass out to halfcourt to a contested Manu, who was only able to tap the ball out of bounds.

The refs ruled there was 0.1 second left, Dallas inbounded to JET who flopped all over the three point line trying to draw a call on Manu, which will assuredly be DallasFan's excuse later.

TampaDude
04-25-2010, 08:53 PM
Great win!! But what did Duncan do at the end? I'm not watching it.

He threw a long pass to Manu, and the ball bounced out of bounds with .1 left on the clock. Announcers said that Duncan should've called time out. You could tell the ref$ were desperately trying to give the Mavs one final chance, but the game was basically over. You cannot legally have a shot with only .1 left on the clock, only a tip in, and that would only be 2 points. Ballgame.

What were any of our players doing anywhere near any of theirs out past the 3pt line is the real question.

With 0.1 left, not enough time to get a shot off, you don't want to be anywhere near the other team, because you can be sure they'll flop into you.

Capt Bringdown
04-25-2010, 08:53 PM
Tonight we won despite the efforts of our Big Three, not because of them. Duncan and Muanu will bounce back, but I'm disturbed about Tony's shitty court decision making and turnovers. His shooting is great, but he needs to pull his head out and stop playing like Iverson FFS.

We're going to need them both to go on any kind of a run. This was just Hill's night tonight, just like Tony put away Dallas Friday and kept us in Game 2 to allow us to build a lead when no offensive players were on the floor.

This was likely the Mavs best shot to get back into the series....glad to see our HCA hold up after taking theirs. HOPEFULLY we close this thing out. Damn, feels like it's been forever since we've comeback from a double-digit deficit in the playoffs.

100% agree, I thought the same. Hill's confidence is only growing from here on...

Spurs push Mavs to brink of elimination (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/recap?gameId=300425024)
Paul J. Weber

George Hill sank yet another big shot from the corner, this time right in front of the Dallas Mavericks bench, and ran back upcourt flashing three fingers.

He probably meant 3-pointer.

Or maybe it was three down, one to go.

While Tim Duncan had a miserable 34th birthday and Manu Ginobili looked as rough at times as his bandaged-up broken nose, Hill scored 29 points to help the Spurs push the second-seeded Mavericks to the brink of elimination with a 92-89 victory on Sunday night.

“From the day they drafted me, I knew I belonged,” said Hill, found by the Spurs late in the first round two years ago.

Hill’s playoff performance was, in the Duncan era of the Spurs, virtually unprecedented.

The 23-year-old guard became the first player other than Duncan, Ginobili or Tony Parker to lead the Spurs in scoring in a playoff game since the first round in 2007. That’s a span of 41 playoff games.

Put in even more remarkable context, one of the Big Three has been the top scorer for San Antonio in all but two postseason games since the Spurs won their second championship in 2003.

Michael Finley was the first in 2007. Hill became the other after Duncan, Parker and Ginobili combined for just 31 points in a physical Game 4 that left tempers flaring.

“If you tell me before the game we hold the Big Three to those numbers, we figure we win the game,” Mavs forward Dirk Nowitzki said.

Heading home to Game 5 on Sunday night, the Mavs have other numbers to worry about.

One is being on the verge of their third first-round playoff exit in four years. Considered one of the deepest teams in the West while claiming the No. 2 seed, Dallas is now tasked with trying to become just the ninth team in NBA history to rally from a 3-1 deficit in a best-of-seven playoff series.

It was three years ago that the top-seeded Mavericks were shocked in the playoffs by eighth-seeded Golden State. Dallas is now in danger of getting ousted by the No. 7 Spurs.

After the game, Nowitzki climbed up a dais in the media room, took the microphone off the stand and slouched back in his chair with a heavy sigh.

He scanned a copy of the box score: Duncan getting four points on 1-of-9 shooting. Ginobili getting a modest 17. Parker scoring just 10.

“It’s tough. I’m not going to sit here and lie,” said Nowitzki, who was held to 17 points, his worst outing in the series. “In Game 2 we should have had it at home and we feel we should have had one here. We didn’t and it’s frustrating, but we have to keep fighting until it’s over.”

Game 5 is Tuesday night in Dallas.

If Game 4 was any indication, it could be a rough-and-tumble elimination game. Officials rang up three flagrant fouls, pouring more fuel on an already intense Texas rivalry.

Tempers flared as the Mavs threw away a 14-point lead in the third quarter, none more so than when Eduardo Najera was ejected after hooking a hand around Ginobili’s head and sending him belly flopping to the floor.

A livid Popovich leaped from his chair and began stomping toward the basket before being slowed down by his assistants. Minutes earlier, Richard Jefferson and Jason Terry had to be separated when words escalated in the third quarter.

“We’re not going to back (down), we’re not going to take hits and let them keep doing it,” Hill said. “Our guys stepped up and we can deliver a blow, too.”

The Mavs can no longer count on shutting down the Big Three as enough. Duncan has scored at least 25 points in the first three games of the series. Ginobili, meanwhile, made just 4-of-16 shots while wearing a bandage across his broken nose that went from cheek-to-cheek, forgoing the discomfort of a face mask.

But he was bailed out by Hill, who was held scoreless in the series opener while battling a sore ankle.

“He really earned our trust all season long and he’s responding in the playoffs in a tough situation,” Ginobili said. “He started in front of Tony, which is not easy at all, coming from an injury and zero-point first game. It was not easy. The way he stepped up today and lead us was impressive.”

Caron Butler had 17 points for Dallas, the NBA’s best road team during the regular season. But the Mavs couldn’t leave San Antonio with a win, and they have to push the series to a Game 6 to earn another shot.

Butler and Shawn Marion seemed to get the message after getting benched in the second half of Game 3. Marion had 14 points and helped push Dallas to a 51-37 lead early in the third quarter. It was reminiscent of Game 3, when Dallas went on a 17-0 run to get back in the game.

But then the Mavs’ meltdown began.

Dallas missed its last 11 shots of the third and did not hit a field goal over the final 7:47 of the quarter. The Mavs turned the ball over eight times, struggling so much that even a simple inbound play was difficult.

Still, the Mavs weren’t done. They pulled off a 13-2 run in the final five minutes to get within 86-84 with 2:13 left. But Ginobili came back down and connected on his first 3-pointer in seven tries, and the Mavs watched their chances disappear on back-to-back misses by Nowitzki and Jason Kidd in the final 28.9 seconds.

“We’re not looking at three straight,” Kidd said. “We’re just looking at Game 5 and that’s as far as we can look.”

NOTES: Terry scored all of his 13 points in the second half, returning to the game after hurting his left ankle in the second quarter and being taken to the locker room. …The Spurs made 6 of their 17 3-pointers after hitting none in Game 3.

Tonight's game was another epic game. I thought game 3 was amazing....good lord this was just insane in the second half!!!

Props to dice, hill, Blair on both sides this game. The big 3 were off but the defensive intensity was still there. And the emotion overall from our guys was just inspiring and outstanding.

I can't wait for game 5.

The turning point in this game was RJ's block of the little pendejo and the resulting fast break. Hill was clutch. Dice was clutch. Blair was a beast, and his energy really helped fuel the comeback.

On a night when the big three were flat, it's great to know that our dog pound of role players can tear shit up when needed.

What a game! Damn I thought it was going to a hard fought one but I never saw this coming. To win this one with both Manu and TD off speaks volumes for the supporting cast. RJ and Blair, who brought alot of energy and timely rebounds and tip ins, were very good but Hill was incredible. He just had his coming out party tonight - quoting Doug Collins on that one. Even Bogans played some good ball tonight. Though ofensively challenged he did play some hard nosed D. At least he wasn't out there too much. Ditto for Bonner.

Spreaking of Matt will he ever break out of his post season(s) slump? Or is he one of those regular season guys who can't handle the pressure of the playoffs? Most likely he can't but the Spurs still need to trot him out occasionally just to " spread" the floor. Why can't he just imagine he's in Boston and play like that? He needs some kind of subliminal suggestion or something. As we'ce seen in the past teams are just going to ignore him all together if he can't hit the open 3.

Let's close these guys out Tuesday so as to get some rest for the older guys. Going to be another war in big D.

You know, before the inbound, I imagined Manu fouling the shooter

It almost happened :(

Not to get overly philosophical, but if you can't technically shoot a three with 0.1 left then can you really foul a shot that can't be taken?

I just watched the game because I had to tape it and all I can say is wow. That was damn intense. I dont know if I have ever been as nervous or anxious during a Spurs game in my life. Our guys show great heart and perseverance.

exactly. Then why even inbound the ball? Game over. The rules are such that even if he shot the ball and it went in the shot still wouldn't have counted. It's an illegal shot. IIRC

But you have to finish the game so they played it out. Right?

In retropect I think the Spurs got a lucky break late in this game. When Manu hit the three to go up by 5 I was thinking to myself - didn't TP get fouled on that pass to Manu? I mean the Dallas player (forget who it was) had grabbed his arm and was pulling down on it or at least it seemed that way to me. If so then a foul should have been called and FTs awarded. If TP makes both then the Spurs are up buy 4 instead of 5. And TP making both FTs may or may not have happened. That extra point makes a big difference and changes how the Mavs attack later on.

Just saying. And definitely not complaining either. :D
