View Full Version : The Spurs are just beating a team they're supposed to beat

While it's good for the Spurs to be back to 2002-2007 championship form, this first round is really nothing to get excited about. The Spurs came into the series against the Mavericks as the favorites. Dallas has one All-Star in Dirk Nowitzki, but after Dirk, who's left? It's a one-man team. The Spurs are used to beating this team in the playoffs. We beat them in 2001, 2003, 2006 was all but won if not for some BS officiating. And 2009 doesn't count because Manu was out. So while it's fun to see the Spurs winning, we shouldn't be rubbing this in Mavs fans' faces. The Spurs were expected to win this series. No big surprises here. Dallas thought they could come out and hit lucky shots, but now that the shots aren't falling , now what?

This isn't trash talking. When you have a supporting cast of two Washington Wizards, Eduardo Najera, and JJ Barea, how much can you really expect out of the Mavs? Not much. So we shouldn't be too hard on them. The Mavericks pulled an upset in Game 1 but we really should have won this series 4-0, but we'll take an extra game and finish them off Tuesday. So, the Spurs so far have just been doing what they're supposed to do against a team they're supposed to beat. The Mavs wanted to come out and try and shoot some bullshit shots on us? Try again. When Jason Terry isn't getting fast break jumpers and Dirk's fadeaway shot isn't falling, this team is more of a 41-41 type of team. How about Erick Dampier? Shooting 0% in the series.

Again, nothing personal against Dallas, no one expected them to win this series in the first place.

Butler and Haywood are nothing to sneeze at. I would kill to have Butler on the Spurs even now. Probably more so then Jefferson, although Jefferson is starting to make that a little less desirable. Hell even Haywood is better right now than most of our bigs.

Dallas is playing with the best team they've ever had, it's not so perfectly built to destroy the Spurs anymore ala Harris and Howard, but it's still a better team than the ones that choked in the finals.

Be honest. Is that what you were saying after Game 1? Cuz if it is, you should be in Vegas, and not hanging around here.

SpursDynasty, you never cease to amaze with your completely arse-backwards takes.

We were favourites... really? The #2 against the #7 who made a big upgrade trade at the deadline?

And did you watch the Spurs at all this year? "Beating a team we are meant to beat"... really? Did you see this kind of defence at all this year? Did you see us play with this kind of heart, intensity and toughness during the regular season this year? I certainly didn't.

I call bullshit on your entire take.

:rolleyes

Even spur homers (Legler and Ludden) picked against us......

Ludden b/c he was worried about Hill's health and Legs b/c he's slowly going insane....he picked the mavs over the lakers in the conference finals

Spurs will still a tough battle to close it out...gotta eat humble pie now

To be fair, 3 out of those 4 could still end up being right. Gotta take care of business in Game 5.

I think this series is actually pretty intense. Watching the first two games got me thinking that this series could go any which way, and all the games have been pretty close so far.

This thread is not bullshitting. The Spurs really were the favorites to win the series. Best teams win 7-game series. If the Mavs were supposed to win, they would make their shots. But they're not making their shots. The Spurs are making their shots because are they are supposed to and expected to win. If the Mavs were the favorites, why aren't they making shots?

Nothing personal against Dallas or Mav fans here. No trash talking. The Spurs are just making their shots and doing what they're supposed to do against a sub-par Dallas team. No big surprises.

Going into the playoffs, people said the Lakers would wake up and run away with the West. The Mavs were the clear #2 and everyone else was a big pile of even teams with a bunch of holes.

OKC was too young, Spurs too old and wrong fitting parts, Denver nad Jazz's problems were well known, Blazers too young and Roy injured, Suns were still the Suns...

Mavs had made the big trade that made them the only threat to the Lakers. They ran off 34 wins in a row after the trade. This was the most talent Dirk has ever had. And now suddenly they are just another team with holes?

The West is tough. Anyone is capable of beating anyone right now. But only one team will come out. I don't think there's a team any of the others is supposed to beat.

so what you're saying is, since dallas isn't the favorites, they're really just missing the shots they're supposed to miss, vis-a-vis, spurs are simply making the shots they're supposed to make. got it.

This makes absolutely no sense. You should think before you post. Who favored the Spurs to win the series? 7 out of 10 analysts at ESPN picked the mavs to win the series. If your talking about here, well, that's a bit unfair seeing how this is a SPURS forum. Of course the majority are going to pick the Spurs. I can't think of too many people who expected the Spurs to win the series.

The Mavs have just as much talent as the Spurs. The only difference is the Spurs are putting that talent to better use.

What the hell does making shots have to do with winning expectations. Analysts make their picks prior to game 1 of the series. They can't predict who's going to make shots and who's going to draw blanks. If we follow your theory, then OKC would have been favored to beat the Lakers because their shooting at a higher percentage through the first 4 games.

The Spurs beat the Mavs by a total of 7 points in games 3 and 4. Don' think the Mavs can't turn this series around. The Mavs are playing two of the final three at home. The series is far from over.

To say the spurs are favored to win because they are making shots and the Mavs aren't is bull.
