So maybe it was (http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/04/18/dont-worry-that-wasnt-the-new-iphone/) the next iPhone (http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/04/17/is-this-the-next-iphone/). Gizmodo somehow managed to get their paws on a prototype of what’s probably sure to be the next iPhone. Not only that, but they’ve snapped a bunch of pics, shot a few videos and even tore that sucker apart. Sadly the thing won’t boot up so there is a lot of info that will remain a secret until Stevesy hits the stage at WWDC this June, but for now we know the following:

It measures in at a petite 4.5″ x 2.31″ x 0.37″ and weighs 140g
It feels more sturdy and luxurious than the 3GS, yet feels good in the hand and in pockets despite its heft
The back is made of either glass or a “shiny plastic” (remember that ceramic material patent Apple holds? Could this be it?)
The chasis is milled aluminum
No way of verifying the displays resolution since it’s not possible to get past “Connect to iTunes”, but it’s definitely at a much higher resolution than previous devices
The camera has been improved and has a flash
Thereis indeed front-facing camera
Uses a micro-SIM just like the iPad
The 5.25 WHr at 3.7V battery has a larger capacity than does the one found in the 3GS

Apple hasn't truly innovated since the first iPhone. The new iPhone seems like an incrimental improvement to the 3GS. Other than a higher resolution screen (which is unremarkable now for a smart phone), I see little here to be truly excited about.

The Evo will likely have a better or = camera, a bigger display with at least equivalent resolution, 720p video recording out of the box, a kickstand, and 4G service which allows it to double as a wifi hotspot for up to 8 devices. The Evo is the real deal. I'm doubtful the locked down Apple phone will be able to compete from an objective standpoint. Will it outsell the Evo? Certainly. Sales figures != quality, however.

The HD2 is running Windows Mobile, and even then is considered an excellent phone by many reviews. The Evo 4G has a better camera, a front facing camera for videoconferencing, a better battery, and of course, Android.

Android will alleviate many of the Windows Mobile issues. Also, Sprint has nothing to do with the software updates, those are going to be through HTC and Google, so I'm not sure what you're referencing here.

The HTC Hero on Sprint is still running Android 1.5. Google isn't pushing them out to Sprint phones, it's the most common gripe about the phone/platform on that network. Verizon pushed out the 2.0 updates to the Droid, not Motorola or Google either. The only phone Google pushes out updates for to my knowledge is the Nexus One.

It would be much, much less of a big deal to me right now if my current phone (LG Neon) wasn't a huuuuuuuge piece of trash. I moved to DC and went off the family plan, and I didn't feel like putting a brand new contract on a 2 year old iPhone, so I decided to wait for the Evo.

Even if I was still using the iPhone though, I'd be pretty pumped about this new phone. Just not totally geeked like I am right now to own a phone that actually works and doesn't shut itself off 4 to 8 times per day for no reason.

That's interesting, because a lot of the tech blogs have been lamenting the fact that the iPhone lacks a kickstand. I'm pretty happy the Evo has one, even if it's not a necessary feature, it's nice to have.

Of course, I'm sure that you know better than they do. I guess having an option of using a feature on the phone is stupider than not having the option (which you aren't forced to use) in the first place. :lol :lol

Yeah, living in DC. It all depends on where you live. I actually reside in Silver Spring right now... which is about 15 minutes north of the downtown DC area. Rent isn't bad. The townhouse I'm living in is about 1400 sq ft and it runs in the $2000 a month with all utilities included. It just varies widely based on where you want to live. Downtown DC is obviously ridiculously expensive, but the transit system is good so that's hardly a must. If you can live out north of Silver Spring, you can find a 1 BR apartment for $800ish a month with no problems.

Video calls are limited to wi-fi right now. I'm sure AT&T would love to tap that ass for the extra 'feature' running on their network.

But yes, ultimately, the removal of the unlimited option has to do with jailbroken phones going around the wifi limitation and still running it on the 3G network. And stuff like MiFi too. Now you also have 720P video...

It’s mentioned briefly in Apple’s promotional video about the design of the iPhone 4, but they’re using a new production process that effectively fuses the LCD and touchscreen — there is no longer any air between the two. One result of this is that the iPhone 4 should be impervious to this dust-under-the-glass issue. More importantly, though, is that it looks better. The effect is that the pixels appear to be painted on the surface of the phone; instead of looking at pixels under glass, it like looking at pixels on glass. Combined with the incredibly high pixel density, the overall effect is like “live print”.

This sucks.

Despite my postings about the Evo being superior, IMO, to the iPhone, I hate seeing this. It means thousands or hundreds of thousands of people are going to have bad days/weeks, and pay good money for a product that has a serious defect.

So, while I'm pretty happy about the fact that Steve Jobs was so arrogantly talking about how the antennae in the iPhone has "never been done before by any company in the history of the Earth" and now basically has to eat his words, it annoys me that Apple would release a phone with such a defect, which is probably a little more serious than either of the Evo's issues (screen grounding/lifting), to say nothing of the yellow spot issue.

Apple is still the shot-caller in the cell phone industry right now, and the better, more complete their launches are, the more pressure it puts on other developers to do the same. We could see a massive recall of iPhones due to this, and companies like HTC and RIM are undoubtedly watching and thinking, "Well, we don't have to pull off perfect product launches either!"

Either way, this is a lose-lose for the general consumer.

ElNono
06-24-2010, 12:56 PM
Actually, the yellow spots is a normal issue that goes away after a day or two of use:

Apple is using a bonding agent called Organofunctional Silane Z-6011 to bond the layers of glass. Apparently, Apple (or more likely Foxconn) is shipping these products so quickly that the evaporation process is not complete. However, after one or two days of use, especially with the screen on, will complete the evaporation process and the yellow "blotches" will disappear. How do I know? I was involved in pitching Z-6011 to Apple.

From here (http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/24/iphone-4s-yellow-spot-issue-goes-away-with-a-bit-of-time/)

Considering it's fixable with a simple sleeve, I really don't think it's such a big of a deal. Potentially, all Apple has to do is hand out those things.

No, it's a lot faster than 802.11g.

G max speed is 54Mbps.
N max speed is +100Mbps.

My router is not dual band though. A dual band router would give you even faster speeds and less interference. Range is improved also since the spec allows for a stronger signal range.

I upgraded my router to N when I got the iPad, and the speed and range difference is quite noticeable.

So you're telling me that you notice a difference in speed on the N connection? Because unless your internet provider gives you a line with over 60 mbps, there should be no difference in the speed your internet is downloading data with. Unless you're running high speed fiber, there is no difference in speed between an N router and a G. To say nothing of the ability of the website you're surfing on to give you 50+ megs of data per second.

54 Mbps is the theoretical max, or about 6 Megabytes per second. Average throughput is about 20 Megabits per second, or about 2.5 Megabytes per second.

I have:
- Two iPhones
- One iPad
- One Slingbox
- One Wii
- One Popcorn Hour

On the Wifi connection.

Just streaming/copying an HD movie to the Popcorn Hour would bog down the Wifi a lot with the 802.11g. Not to mention that the multiple antenna on the N give you more power, which means less interference and a lot faster throughput.

And no, I have cable at home. Download speed is about 20Mbps. I am moving to 50/20 FIOS (like we have at the office) as soon as Comcast jacks up the price one more time though.

PM5K
06-25-2010, 05:45 PM
Yeah I don't know or care to know what the technical reasons are, but in my experience N is faster than G, even though both are theoretically faster than my internet connection. I get between 3-5 mbps faster on N than G.

Speaking of cases and the like: It seems like the quality of Zagg's InvisibleSHIELD has dropped since I bought my 3GS. One of the units just wouldn't go on without bubbles for anything, it almost seemed like it was wrinkled. Another went on perfectly but exhibited strange vertical lines. Another had a strange anomaly, almost like a tear in the material.

I actually went and bought two the last time I went to Best Buy because they didn't have any at my nearest location and I wanted to be set, but I didn't honestly think I'd have to use both but I did.

I don't know if it's only the 4th gen iPhone product, maybe based on trying to get them out quickly, or if it's their entire lineup or shields.

They look great, but my CapsuleRebels (along with a friend's) have an issue in where the bottom of the case (where the iPod connector is located) starts to sag down over time. It leaves your bottom area more exposed and tends to scratch the chrome bezel when it moves up and down. I'm not sure if that problem has been rectified or is only in some model.s

My wife bought two (one white and one pink) and she haven't had a problem here. She did lose the little connector plug that comes with it, but most cases don't have a plug at all, so no big deal. I love that it comes with an adapter for the universal dock so you can dock it without taking the case off.

It's really, really sweet. Beautiful phone. Nice display, although the screen is a little too yellowish for my tastes. I prefer the coloration of the Evo by quite a bit. The iPhone seems to have better black levels and does better in bright sunlight, though.

However. We can't talk for more than 30 seconds on the phone with each other before she gets a call dropped from AT&T. That phone has SERIOUS reception issues, and not just "covering the antennae" problems.

Apple could be forced to recall its iPhone 4 even before Canadians can get their hands on the iconic company's latest smartphone, crisis-management experts say.
The California company says the iPhone 4 launch in the United States has been the most successful in its history, with sales topping 1.7 million units in three days, but the product launch in Canada this month could be mired in muck — or even delayed — after running into loads of trouble south of the border.
"I have heard from some sources at Apple stores that this reception issue could result in a delay," Vancouver-based Gary Ng, who blogs about all things Apple in Canada, said Tuesday. "Because we haven't heard anything from any of our carriers, there could be a delay, especially now that Consumer Reports has put out this report saying that with their testing, there is an actual hardware issue with the antenna, not just a software issue."

It happens with mine without a case. But the issue is kind of more complicated than it seems. Before the 4.0.1 update, it used to show 5 bars all the time at work, then if I place my finger in that little bar on the bottom left, it would drop to zero.
After the 4.0.1 update, the bars at work never show more than 3. It's normally around 2 or 3. I still occasionally drop calls, but no worse than the 3G.

At any rate, I've got a case like 4 weeks ago and it just hasn't been an issue at all. I haven't even put on the free bumpers I received from Apple.
I even used it before without a case for the longest time and it wasn't a deal breaker either.

I love the phone. It's snappy, I'm really liking using Skype in the background, and the battery lasts like nobody's business. I don't think it has ever gone below 80% in a day's use.

I love how people like to say that single anecdotes are proof that the problem doesn't exist. Frankly, I don't give a shit if everyone else is having the problem. I'm not and that's all I care about.

Having said that, the reception problem is like a Yani album; supposedly there are tons of them out there, and yet, I don't know anyone who has it.

:lmao

Now thats an awesome analogy
