Jersey Sales Provide a Measure of Player Popularity (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=tsn-jerseysalesprovideam)
SportingNews

Every NBA player wants to win an MVP award and/or an NBA championship, but the true test of popularity comes in another area: jersey sales. If the league is ultimately a business, then jersey sales prove which guys are the hottest products around. It’s a test of who is a PS3 and who will be forced to fend for himself against an army of feral Furbies in a city dump.

Today, the NBA released its list of top-selling jerseys for the 2009-10 season (http://www.nba.com/2010/news/04/28/jersey.sales/index.html?ls=iref:nbahpt2) as calculated at the NBA Store in New York and on NBA.com. The top 15 players:

1. Kobe Bryant
2. LeBron James
3. Kevin Garnett
4. Derrick Rose
5. Dwight Howard
6. Dwyane Wade
7. Chris Paul
8. Paul Pierce
9. Kevin Durant
10. Carmelo Anthony
11. Nate Robinson
12. David Lee
13. Brandon Roy
14. Pau Gasol
15. Rajon Rondo

The NBA released a similar list in January (http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/The_Baseline/entry/view/52677/some_surprises_among_the_nbas_top-selling_jerseys) covering all of 2009, but there have been some important changes in just a few short months. One is that Kevin Durant has shot from No. 15 to No. 9, which reflects both his excellent season and the growing appeal of the Thunder as one of the hippest teams in the league. It’s also interesting to see that while Steve Nash and Shaquille O’Neal have dropped off the list, Kevin Garnett has maintained his place near the top, actually moving up from No. 6 to No. 3. His skills may be deteriorating, but the name recognition remains.

As usual, the names of Knicks and Celtics dominate the field even as the Lakers remain the most popular team overall. David Lee and Nate Robinson are not two of the most popular players of the league, but they are in a city (or, in Robinson’s case, was in a city) where most Knicks fans do their shopping at the NBA Store. Plus, as much as I like Rajon Rondo, it’s unlikely he’d be on this list if he played for another franchise.

Please note that while LeBron is now the consensus best player in the league, Kobe stays at the top of the jersey heap. That’s because of the relative size of their markets, pure and simple. Clevelanders, make sure LeBron doesn’t see this list. It could be your only hope of retaining him this summer!

No wonder Lebron is itching to change his number. Kobe's been # 1 for the last 4 years.

No wonder Lebron is itching to change his number. Kobe's been # 1 for the last 4 years.

Let's see, Kobe plays in LA which is a huuuuge market. LeBron plays in a small/mid market, where the entire population could fit in one nook of LA. Do the math.

Market size helps, but it has nothing to do with this ranking. Chris Paul plays in a smaller market than Paul Pierce and Pau Gasol and he spent most of his time in street clothes this season but he's way ahead of both.

Kobe's much more charismatic than Lebron worldwide. There's nothing to dispute there.

Are you retarded or just dumb? You just said market size helps, and then said it had nothing to do with the ranking. Of course market size has something to do with Kobe selling more jerseys.

Outside of Boston, no one likes Paul Pierce. And Pau Gasol, well, he's freaking Pau Gasol. Pierce and Gasol are nowhere near the level of popularity as Bron, Kobe, and Paul. Chris Paul is a young, up-and-coming player who is one of the most popular players across the entire country.

I was actually speaking in terms of the 1-2 spot. Marketing does help other players who does'nt have superstar appeal, thats why you see David Lee and Nate Robinson there. But in cases of Kobe and Lebron, the leagues top two cash cow, their market size is irrelevant in jersey sales simply because these players were also marketed heavily by various endorsers. Kobe or Lebron will top the charts regardless where they play, because of who they are not where they play.

There so many variable factors that needs to be taken into consideration not just market size. Players like Iverson and McGrady (Orl) ranked higher than Kobe and Shaq at the height of their championship days, so that pretty much throws your "market size" argument out of the window.

Outside of Boston, no one likes Paul Pierce. .

Yet he claimed the # 1 spot in jersey sales even before he won a championship? No one likes KG but he ranked third? Weak argument from your part.

And Pau Gasol, well, he's freaking Pau Gasol.
Great argument.

I never owned a player jersey, and I never will. My logic is simple. I was never good enough to make my own high school team and get my own jersey. I love the game and to go out and shoot hoops.Problem is, I always have been nothing more than an average player. My ability does not affect my enjoyment of basketball. Wearing someone else's jersey and name would disgrace them and make me play worse than I do if I wore it on the court.

New York.

There aren't any fans though. I was talking to this kid at school today that lives in New York.

"Where are you from man?"

"New York. You're from San Antonio, let me guess, Cowboys and Spurs?" (some kind of side, they have a lot of sides up there. Upper east side ftw?)

"Yeah bro, you watch basketball?"

"Oh yeah."

"What team do you like in the NBA?"

"I don't really have a favorite team."

"You're not a Knicks fan?"

"Ehh"

lol

lmao its amazing how close minded and ignorant many of you are. just because Charles Barkley likes Williams doesn't mean he is the best. lol at how many of you have the "what have you done for me today?" attitude. I guess anyone who is balling out of control in the playoffs RIGHT NOW is the best at their position then with that mindset huh? Williams is having a good playoff run so far, but that doesn't mean anything. he has yet to ever put up top point guard stats not even once in his career. talk to me whenever the dude can actually put up 20 points a game or at least lead the league in SOMETHING ...
