WTF?

So was this explosion Environmental Terrorism? Pretty circumstantial that it happened right after Obama came out in support of more offshore drilling and the explosion happened just hours before Earth Day started...

Wow, not that I don't believe you, but . . . link? I want to read about it.

Obama just said it himself a few minutes ago at the White House. I heard the announcement semi-live on the radio. He was doing some "teacher of the year" presentation and talked about the rig leak for a couple of minutes.

if that was an environmental terrorist attack, itd probably be the most counter-productive one in history.

I would guess that it was in response to a question, posed by someone. Have to hear the quote to know what to think.

Smells like a conspiracy theory with little basis in fact other than "coincidence" DUN DUN DUN!

If one's goal was to show the dangers/vulnerabilities of offshore oil rigs, I would disagree. Counter-productive to garnering sympathy perhaps, but as far as highlighting the dangers of such activities...

Terrorism almost universally tends to be counter-productive to any given cause though.

At this point, the best I could find was that several agencies are conducting an coordinated investigation, and I would be pretty sure that terrorism is a possibility that is being considered as a potential cause, just as arson is always looked for in any large fire.

I would judge the liklihood that this was intentional to be fairly low.

Ecoterrorists generally aren't sophisticated/trained/competant enough to pull off something so spectacular. Land-based arson is usually the modus operendi.

Much more likely is that it was an industrial accident.

yeah but millions of gallons of oil leaked into the gulf would save the whales for sure.

I would defer judgement until getting some clarification.

Generally it is the first usage, Special Weapons And Tactics for paramilitary police forces to sweep areas. My guess that was indeed the case, but bear in mind that the man might have been handed a briefing paper with that abbreviation for these things that seem pertinent to rigs:

Subsea Well Abandonment Tool
Surface Water Assessment Team

I dunno. I guess we get to find out.

Extra security on rigs would seem prudent, until the ultimate cause of the explosion on the downed rig was known, IMO. If I were a politician bent on covering my ass, that is what I would do.

My guess is that he just fucked up...they are sending inspection teams and he was off teleprompter and called them SWAT teams. They have already burned the link I posted. They will either cover it up/ignore it completely or if Gibbs gets cornered he will say that it stood for something else like Special Well Assessment Team.
