As great as the Admiral was, he never won anything before Duncan came to town.
Granted, Dirk has had better support than David ever had, but one superstar can't do it alone.

Don't understand the Dirk hate, he's one of the best ever. He was a warrior in this series, that's for sure.

Brilliant offensive player. Possibly the best offensive player in the league. Not too much of a defensive stalwart though. He lost, but will go with head high. Massively good performances throughout the series.

He's never had enough help, and I'm not sure he's capable of carrying a team in the clutch, but when he's shooting well he's ABSOLUTELY UNSTOPPABLE. No doubt about it, his shot is legit.

I've always respected Dirks game. He gets a lot of shit when people compare him to Duncan, but just because he's not the Best PF of all time doesn't mean he's a bad player. He's got limitations, but he's not as bad a defender as people think he is. I just think the fact he's been compared to Duncan and Garnett has put a light on those weaknesses, and people have focused on them.

Respect for his play, He was a Warrior

Now that the series is over, I can feel sorry for Dirk. He is an awesome player with lots of talent. It's just too bad he plays for the Mavs. Question is - will be remain loyal and finish his career with the Mavs after all these disappointments? It would be nice to see him win a championship, just not with the Mavs.

It would be nice to dream about him playing next to Timmy in a year or so. But I'm not sure how Dirk would fit in the Spurs system because he doesn't really play defense.

Realistically, no. But if the Spurs can make a deep run and show that they're still legitimate contenders, and find some way to clear some cap space this offseason, they should at least try to go after him.

But, realistically, no. The Spurs have little to no chance at getting him.

I don't think you'll hear anybody questioning his talent. But in tonight's game, he lost his cool and having to sit down with the 4 fouls cost his team. Eventually, to truly succeed in this league you need to be mentally though, and I think for all the incredible talent he has, he's just lacking in that department. Don't forget that Cuban brought Kidd over to anchor the leadership department on that team, and they still can't get it done.

Dirk is A LOT like Nash. Incredible at what he does well. Unstoppable, really.

But did you notice that Dirk does not guard anybody important? Ever? Tim can. Dirk can't. Because he is not a defender.

Dirk is basically a huge sf, that plays a sf game, but ends up getting guarded by c/pf. Because he can move like a sf, he can get open jumpshots. Like Bonner, he pulls a bigman outside the paint, allowing his teammates to get more rebounds. He is very valuable, but not a traditional big by any means. Thus, he cannot form the key combination for a championship team: a great front court player with a great background player.

And I do wish he could be our sf, because he is unstoppable. But he could never be the pf next to tim, b/c he can hardly guard pf's. He had to guard the big who is not an offensive threat in the post.

I agree in principle with ignighnokt, who I had to look at 3x btw, cuz his name is all jacked up, as well as ElNono, but I think I can put it in a more respectful way.

Dirk is incredibly awesome mainly because he is not conventional in any way, shape or form. Like others have said, he's a PF in an SFs body, so he's either more mobile or taller than any defender he faces. Most people stop there, but I just realized, what if teams were somehow forced to play Manu that way? If for some reason people always put a C or a PG on him, he'd destroy the bigs with his speed, and take out the PGs with his size and trickery. I'm not saying this is a great metaphor cuz I'm really fucking tired, but just insert any player who is awesome yet not a huge match up nightmare (Timmy- put a tall, strong big on him and hope for the best). For Dirk, you'd have to find a big who defended like Bowen, and was really fast. Since that player does not exist in this universe, everyone is fucked.

I can't take too much away from Dirk, he's honed his shot to near perfection, and it's everyone else's problem, not his, that he decided to not "fit the mold", as it where. But I believe warriors should be great on both ends of the court. Dirk is no longer bad on D, but to say he's even close to being a great defender is a huge stretch.

To me, a true warrior has passion that forces him to not pull any punches (I wish Manu had reigned his warrior ass in at the end of the 06 series), and excel whether or not his team has the ball. If a samurai was stellar on offense but was not very good on defense, he probably wouldn't last too long. Sometimes you must counter before the the killing blow.

Having said all that, I respect the hell out of him. He just flops way too much, I know Manu used to flop around all the time (at least he ended up stopping that), but he wasn't guaranteed to flop his way to most of his calls. It is a good strategy, but not one worthy of respect. Kind of like Tim when he protests fouls, or anyone screaming when they go to the hoop. If he becomes a Spur, I hope he flops less, that shit sickens me when anyone does it, even my favorite player of all time.

P.S. Did the Nuggets have any success last year on Dirk? I know they supposedly really bothered him with the trio of Nene, K-Mart, and Birdman. But I also remember reading that he went off a couple times anyways.

Dirk is an incredible player and a good person. He deserves to be on a better team, I think he should go somewhere else. It's a shame for this talent.

They had no answer for him. I always have to laugh when people think K-Mart gave Dirk fits. Dirk averaged 34.4 ppg, 11.6 rpg and 4 apg against the Nuggets.

He's good but dude was flopping all over the place and refs did him a favor in 2nd half by ignoring all his fouls.

That's because at leats 1 of his 1st half fouls was complete bullshit and another 1 was questionable.

The call where Hill drove past and lifted up his arm to initiate contact with Dirk's arm shouldn't have been a foul.

On another it was Duncan flopping on that one where the pass sailed over his head and they called Dirk for the push in the back. Looked to me like Dirk was using the standard legal forearm to shield Duncan.

If you don't like the guy, fine. But to whine about flopping after this particular game makes you look like an idiot.

That technical foul on Butler was also bullshit ... Hill flopped backward on that from a VERY small shove in the chest.... and the dumb official bought right into it.

Everyone in this thread who is bitching about Dirk/mav flopping after this particular game is probably retarded in some way.

Respect.

I have great respect for his scoring ability. Best scoring 7' player ever.

But I've noticed over the years that when he's had to carry his team with a huge scoring night, at the end of the game in the last minutes he starts missing shots he'd been making all night. The shots start clanking and the Mavs start wanking.

Some might say he chokes, but it could be he just runs out of gas.

i feel bad for him too. i never ever want the spurs losing to the mavs...but i always hate seeing dirk miss out again. dirk needs one. i dont think he'll split for another team though. too much history in big D.

Dallas loses year after year because of what's between the ears. If they can fix that, they'll get somewhere. But not thru SA :toast

Dirk played the entire 2nd half and the Mavs cut into the lead while he was on the bench thanks to Beaubois. LOL @ using this game to criticize Dirk's mental toughness.

They only could make serious run once Dirk was back on the floor (beginning of the third). But you don't have to take my word for it, let's see what somebody like Ludden says:

"Just understand that before halftime in Game 6, Nowitzki had four fouls because he couldn’t keep his composure, because a franchise player had let the Spurs get inside his body and mind again. These losses are shaping his legacy. The coaches and complementary players changed – the best supporting cast of his career, Nowitzki insisted – but he looked all alone again."

And even the most homer of Spurs fans could say Dirk played better than Manu this series.

This conversation is not about Manu. Please stop deflecting.

He's a lot tougher physically than I gave him credit for. Dirk can take a beating.

The one guy (spursfaninla) was right about one thing though. Dirk is awesome at what he does, but he doesn't do anything else. He was great scoring the ball but he wasn't making plays for others and controlling the offense in its entirety. And he was invisible on the other end of the court.

Even when Duncan wasn't scoring, he was controlling the paint and the glass and still getting his points other ways. He even took on the task of guarding Dirk on the perimeter, even while still patrolling the paint and boarding.

Dirk is just a very one-dimensional player. Great at that one dimension. But still one-dimensional. When he had the ball on offense you knew he was going to have a great chance to score. Other than that I didn't notice him on the court.

Respect to Dirk, truly. But i'm starting to see why people say you can't build a championship team around him. The great game he had last night, as good as it was, confirmed a lot of the criticisms about him.

:tu Another quality post by ElNono!

My thoughts about Dirk exactly. and I'd go so far as to say that he needs another superstar who can play down low in order to "free" him up from the leadership role. Even though the Mavs brought in Kidd I still think they look to Dirk to lead them to victory. He would be a really good #2 option - like on the Spurs. Imagine Dirk being "Bonner" + a million.

Agreed. But for Dirk's sake I think he needs to go down low more often. Though it seems not to be in his genes I go back to the '06 season and POs where he did in fact get into the paint more. And it paid off with their best regular season record and his MVP trophy. But after that season he went back to being the same old Dirk, which aint bad but he could do better.

Also in other threads I've pondered the fact that most bigs from Europe seem to like to stay out of the paint and shoot the 3. Why is this? I don't know but would like for someone to help me understand that. Is it the coaching over there? What? I dunno.

That's because at leats 1 of his 1st half fouls was complete bullshit and another 1 was questionable.

Actually of what I saw, including the replays, it looked like Dirk had caught Hill's shoulder as Hill went by, ilrespective of HIll lifting his arm or not. Regardless of what people think Dirk lost his composure in the first half and paid the price. Game 6 - elimination game - you need to be in there to help your team win. Getting those fouls isn't going to cut it.

lol. Why a 7 footer shoots 20ft fadaway jumpers when he has 6'1 point guards on him is beyond me. dude is a wimp. He can ball but the guy is a softie

Like I said above it seems to be a European thing for some unknown reason to me. And at this point it would be extremely difficult for Dirk to changes his spots so to say.

He is what he is.

No kidding. Dirk shooting a fadeaway 20 footer is a higher percentage shot for him than if he'd try to take someone down on the block like Dirk's critics think he should be doing solely because he's 7ft.
