AZ Gov signs changes to AZ immigration law

One change to the bill strengthens restrictions against using race or ethnicity as the basis for questioning and inserts those same restrictions in other parts of the law.

"These new statements make it crystal clear and undeniable that racial profiling is illegal, and will not be tolerated in Arizona," she said in a statement.

Changes to the bill language will actually remove the word "solely" from the sentence, "The attorney general or county attorney shall not investigate complaints that are based solely on race, color or national origin."

Another change replaces the phrase "lawful contact" with "lawful stop, detention or arrest" to apparently clarify that officers don't need to question a victim or witness about their legal status.

A third change specifies that police contact over violations for local civil ordinances can trigger questioning on immigration status.

haven't read the new changes, so i'm unsure about how to feel about this.

but if they can see they made a mistake in the original law, why wouldn't they just scrap the whole thing?

Now they won't investigate "solely" on race, so come up with some bullshit reason. Reasonable suspicion will now be: "he spit on the sidewalk, and he was a brownie."


I think a lawful stop/detention can be construed as contact with an individual to gain information on a crime that has (or is taking) taken place. IOW--I think an officer can lawfully detain a person as a witness. Witnesses in some cases are victims. You do the math.

The real answer here is obviously to work with Mexican officials to defeat the drug cartels, strengthen the Mexican economy and improve the welfare of its workers so that Mexican immigrants don't want (or need) to come here...you know, like we are trying unsuccessfully to do thousands of miles from here in Iraq and Afghanistan...

If the changes are those suggested within the OP, it still doesn't say what will be the basis for questioning. It specifically admonishes racial profiling, but that means nothing if it remains so vague about how it will be enforced and how questioning will be determined. Lawful stop... well, that means pretty much anything, doesn't it? And even with a lawful stop, if I, as a white girl, am lawfully stopped, I feel relatively confident the citizenship questions wouldn't be asked.

Stupid. How/why would the attorney general possibly ignore complaints of legal citizenship that weren't based on national origin? Citizenship violations can't be based on anything else.
