I'll agree.

How large of a role does drinking beer in Texas have to do with the obesity problem?

I would say it's a problem. Just think about the calories in one beer and then think about the lines outside all of the 24 hour drive thrus around 2am after the bars let out. 10 beers plus a couple of carne guisada tacos with cheese means about an extra 2500 calories at 2am.

Yep. Now I guess the real question is whether getting drunk regularly is a cultural thing or Texas thing, but Austin is on the leanest list and they drink a lot there also. So what is the xfactor that is in Dallas, Houston, El Paso, Corpus and San Antonio that is not in Austin? This shit perplexes me.

Most of Austin residents are not native Texans?

There are probably a few reasons why Austin is among the leanest, while the rest of Texas is among the fattest.

1. A good chunk of the Austin population is dominated by the student population. Students are younger, more active, and definitely more worried about their figure or appearance.

2. On the flip side, cities like San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston are places where people go to settle down and raise a family. Once you get settled, it's easy to let things go.

3. Austin is big on alternative food choices. Lots of hippie stops and shops that cater to the vegan and vegetarian lifestyle.

4. Austin, in general, is very big on the whole healthy lifestyle. I rarely saw people out walking/jogging in San Antonio, and they usually were halfway to death. I see people out running here in Austin all the time. Also, lots of jobs here offer fitness centers or wellness benefits.

The problem is San Antonio is a poor city and fast food is becoming cheaper than cooking real food.

mad cause austin isn't as fat, poor or as uncultured as your city. hating on a city that's healthier, smarter and wealthier then you is pretty amusing and pathetic at the same time.

right..right..but you fail to take into account the fact the majority of the fatasses in SA are beaners, and therefore illegals don't go into the census, making it seem better than it is. go ahead and include all the illegal fat beaners living in SA and you guys easily top #1, IMHO.

wealthier than me? healthier? fatter? and SMARTER? lol - what the fuck?

I don't give a fuck about that. Cultured? Yeah San Antonio has no culture :rollin

I'm a very healthy individual, am not poor, and if you told my friends I was fat they'd laugh in your face.

Having hippies, bums, and a shitty highway system doesn't make your city cool. Outskirts of Austin are the only tolerable areas.

JJ Hickson, this post is for you too.

The illegal ones are fast enough to run from La Migra... so I don't buy it.

Did anyone read the link? How they mixed and matched the data from what for their report to read. This is just another crap article to run down a southern city's with crap data. Do you see all the good citys they listed...think about it....

I love living in Austin for all these reasons. but I think the biggest reason is that for most college kids, it doesn't really matter if we have Whataburger after a kegger since our metabolism keeps up.

Having hippies, bums, and a shitty highway system doesn't make your city cool. There's something ironic about those keep austin weird/keep san antonio lame stickers. I think it's that there's nothing weird about austin. It's full of trendy, pussified, bleeding heart hipsters engaged in a constant circle jerk with each other. The area is nice. Most of the hill country is. But, the culture that permeates everything is obnoxious. Keep san antonio lame, indeed.

Also the music scene is way over-rated , just a bunch of has been and never will be musicians, that being said the tail in Austin is top tier for sure..:hat
