Tim Duncan Named 2009-10 NBA All-Defensive Second Team

NEW YORK, May 5, 2010 – Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, winner of the 2009-10 Defensive Player of the Year Award presented by Kia Motors, and guard Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics headline the NBA All-Defensive First Team, the NBA announced today. By totaling 57 points overall, including 28 First Team votes, Howard edged Rondo (50 points overall and 23 First Team votes) as the leading vote-getter.
Also selected to the All-Defensive First Team are forward LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers (45 points), Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant (34 points) and Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace (30 points).

Howard became the first player to lead the league in rebounding and blocks (1973-74 was the first season blocks were kept as an official statistic) in consecutive seasons, averaging 13.2 rebounds and 2.78 blocks. He also became only the fifth player in NBA history to lead the league in rebounding for at least three consecutive seasons. With Howard anchoring the defense, the Magic allowed 95.3 ppg, which ranked fourth in the NBA, and held the opposition to a league-low .438 shooting from the field, including 24 games where opponents shot under .400. Orlando held the opposition to less than 100 points 57 times and to less than 90 points 24 times.

The NBA All-Defensive Second Team consists of center Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs, guards Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat and Thabo Sefolosha of the Oklahoma City Thunder, and forwards Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks and Anderson Varejao of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Duncan has been selected to the NBA All-Defensive team 13 consecutive seasons.

The voting panel consisted of the NBA’s 30 head coaches, who were asked to select NBA All-Defensive First and Second Teams by position. Coaches were not permitted to vote for players from their own team. Two points were awarded for a First Team vote and one point was awarded for a Second Team vote.

That's how I believe it's written -- it's the way I've always known it, at least.

Artistic license on his mother's behalf, I'm sure . . .

Big ol' :tu for Timmy, by the way.

This is bullshit. Thabo should be in Kobe's place and Timmy should be in LeBron's place. NO WAY IN HELL is LeBron a 1st Team All-NBA Defender, this award is becoming a joke.

And, yes ... Thabo should be a first-teamer over Kobe.

There's not a better 2/3 defender in the league, IMO.

Duncan doesn't deserve 1st team for this year(neither does Kobe, but it's a joke anyways), but he got 2nd team due to Bogut's injury..keeps adding to the accolades though..

Duncan making the second team is a joke. He played no D this year.

He can't defend the perimeter any more, but he's fucking MONEY in the paint. I hadn't realized quite how "long" he is, and why he blocks all of those shots without jumping much, and then I saw the jump ball picture for the game 2 Spurs/Suns preview on the Spurs page. Amare can obviously jump much higher, and did, but both he and Tim have the same amount of hand on the ball. :wow

Duncan actually had a pretty good defensive year, it kind of went unnoticed with the inconsistency of the Spurs this year..

The Spurs were a top 10 defensive team with Duncan being 1st on the team in defensive rating by a good margin, 1st in defensive wins by a good margin, and he still blocked 1.7 per 36, which is very good, especially considering the pace..

The Spurs defense was 5 points worse with Duncan off the floor, a massive fall..

They list Duncan at 6-11 and Stoudemire at 6-10, but if you see these two guarding each other or standing near each other during a dead ball, Duncan is noticeably taller and significantly longer.

As for the All-Defensive team selection, he was already the all-time leader in selections, this just adds to his total. Hopefully by the time he's done, he can put it close to out of reach, though Howard might have a shot at it.

I can't believe Mason didn't even get a single vote.
