Suns bench > Spurs bench....so where does Gentry owning him come into place?...

Pop wasn't the one shooting all those ill-advised long jumpers and he wasn't the one who failed to box out. He wasn't the one who failed to rotate on defense either.

I think even Gentry wants this thread closed if not deleted, but since we're on the topic ...
Gentry went 'Pop' on the Suns this year. He developed the bench by playing them a lot during the regular season, even when they weren't playing well, giving Nash unprecedented rest during the regular season. He ignored big offensive numbers and gave/took playing time based on stops and defensive FG percentage. Time on the floor was earned on the defensive end.
Gentry very much stole Pop's framework for developing a playoff team, and the Suns even had a second-half push just like y'all do every season. Nash is rested, the bench is confident, and the Suns are committed to defense (as best they can be with the personnel).
So, sure, kudos to Gentry. But Pop's not being out-coached. He just doesn't have many bullets in his gun right now and the matchups just aren't favorable for the Spurs.
All of this can change with Ginobli going off, of course.

I can't agree. Pop is one of the best. Gentry (who I can't stand), has a better team. Like what I said in other threads, Sun is simply a better team. Duncan, Parker, and Ginobli are still my favorite. But outside these three, blair, bonner, bogan are just horrible.

guys, pop is the best coach but gentry really made some good calls tonight and it looked for moments he was coaching better than pop. we just have to admit that. he's a good coach for the suns, i don't know if for another team but he is for this team.\
i dont agree with the suns having a better team - i think they have a good team up there with the spurs. the problem is the spurs have 3 bench players playing awful by themselves and then collectively horrible when they are together. it's the coach's decision to leave them on the floor.
also gentry exploited a lot of bad matchups and won that little battle there. Pop has an advantage in the the suns can't stop manu parker and duncan at all - in that case is the players like manu who didn't attack the basket as needed from him. manu is my favorite player but he didn't want to own them tonight as he can.

Gentry is everything I wish Carlisle was. Smart rotations.

One thing I've noticed from the Suns in the playoffs this year that I've never seen before is that they keep getting stops after the opposing team calls timeout to try to stop the bleeding. This is a huge thing, when the opponent can't score out of their own timeout, and helps the Suns continue their runs.

Gentry is just pushing in the shit he's supposed to.

Pop pulling a Carlisle by stubbornly sticking with non-producing veterans, when it's so obvious that their mere on-court presence is counterproductive.
Gentry is a heckuva coach. Much better than DanTony, IMO.

knew if was only a matter of time before it came back to this. how is a coach a genius one series and just a week later people are calling him an idiot? really? oh yeah, i forgot. we're talking about spurs fan.
the only idiots are fans who knee-jerk react to every Spurs loss.
could be the suns are just a better team; certainly their bench is better. or, could be that the spurs respond in games 3 and 4 like they did against new orleans a couple of years ago and make it a long series. whatever the case, quit ragging on the 4-time nba champion coach. i think he knows a little more basketball most, if not all, who post on this forum.

Who else was going to do that? They isolated Timmy and they hit their shots. Props to them. Bell and Diaw never provided that kind of reliable offense in crunch time for them.
That's essentially the difference in this series versus ones from years past. The Suns are making buckets when they matter. That's a function of two things:
1) Better role players and a hot starting guard (J Rich). Namely Dudley/Frye/Admunson/Dragic >>>>> Bell/Diaw/<Add 2 random scrubs here>. Phoenix is much deeper and not playing a 7 or 8 man rotation.
2) Worse Spurs defense. You can plainly see that in the last 6 minutes of any game, the defense is not the steel wall it used to be. Down 95-91 with three minutes left in a road playoff game always used to give me a good feeling. I just knew that Bruce, Timmy, Bob or Manu would come up with those big steals or blocks and would turn those into a big play at the other end. Now its not so certain. The other team gets clean open looks more often than not.
In summary, those are player and age related issues and have nothing to do with coaching.
