Amazon has an acer 15.6" HD screen, i5 2.26 gh processor w/turbo boost up to 2.58, 500gb drive, all the DVD supermulti drive/card reader/integrated webcam stuff and 4 GB ddr3 for like $635. It's the only i5 I've seen for less than $800

I could give two shits about gaming on a laptop. The screen is smaller thank my desktop and its never going to be as upgradeable.

No, I'm looking for a strong system that will likely have to last me 3 or so years and still be a fairly strong system. The main use will be research applications which may or may not require running large simulations so it will need a 64 bit OS.

Other than that yeah, I don't care what type of GPU it has but I do want to get the best hardware bang for my buck in a mobile platform.

What kind of price range are you looking at? I'd personally say Asus and Toshiba are your best bets on brands.

If you would still consider an ASUS I would take a look at the U30JC-A1, if you're okay with the screen size.

Do not want a larger screen. 13-15 inches is fine. I'm one of the people that see no point to having large screen laptops unless you want to lug around even more weight.

Not true. Often a re-certified device was never broken in the 1st place; just returned and not legally allowed to be sold again as 'new'. And also, refurbished devices go though more rigorous testing before reentry into the market than new devices often get.

Certain things refurbished are fine. The only device I would avoid refurbished is hard drives and flash memory. Data is the most valuable part of a computer, and the chance that a drive could have been questionable once before is a dealbreaker.

Getting a virus is completely user error. No manufacture makes any machine that is any more susceptible to a virus because thats all software based.

I just don't get what the hell Apple could have over some of the other machines that makes them cost so much more. It HAS to be hype/brand love.
