View Full Version : Alternatives for head coach...

I see the question posed a lot but think it is asked out of context. A lot times I see attaching the 4 ring argument when asking about another head coach or assistant coming in here....like, "well he hasn't coached a team to 4 titles", ect... But thats not exactly a good way to look at things, it'd be like saying Doc rivers is better than Jerry Sloan because he's coached a team to a title. Way off logic. While, I dont stand on my soapbox 24/7, calling for Pop's job, I do think the race has run its course and its time to close the book and start anew. Here are a few candidates and the reason I could see them succeeding Pop.
Scott Brooks-Obviously a masterful job of getting the Thunder to the playoffs. His gameplanning was outstanding and he new how to use young players throughout the year. Something we are gonna need very soon. A coach who knows how to develop and play rookies and 2nd, and 3 rd year players.
Mike Brown- He has a love for San Antonio. You can hear it anytime he is interviewed and asked about the city. He's guided the Cavs to back to back best records with possibly the most pressure on his shoulders than anyone else in the league. All eyes on him and he has yet to fold. Less, we forget him coaching the Cavs to a victory over our Spurs this year with LeBron on the bench.
Avery Johnson- Pop part II if ever there was one. Just doenst have the baggage that comes along with it. Disciplinarian in every sense of the word. A freash voice. A fresh face. Same basic priciples.(for those that dont want to stray to far from the tree).
Tom Thibodeau- Defense. Defense. Defense. If not for him, the Celtics would never have won a title two years ago. He taught them how to clamp a team down and win ugly. For those Spurs fans who like the grind it out, physical in your face basketball...this is your guy.
I could suggest a few more but dont want to bore everyone. None of these guys bring titles as a head coach to the table. Granted. But they do bring youth, fresh ideas, humility, and hungar. Something the Spurs are sorely lacking right now. With Hill, Blair, possibly Splitter, and the #20 pick...who do you want guiding that up and coming team? You still want Pop at the helm with those guys after what we've seen these past few years and the way his rotations have gone? Ask yourself that truthfully...

I would take Mike Browns or Avery Johnson when the time comes that Popovich is to be moved to main office work only.

I think mike brown---is the main reason the cavs have NOT won a title---
I would consider Nate McMillen, though

Mike Budenholzer.
Would Budenholzer be significantly different than Pop? I would assume that anyone who wants to replace Pop believes he has been guilty of some egregious decisions over the past few years; Bud has been sitting right there on the bench through all of them.
If Pop really is bad enough to warrant a change, Bud either (A) didn't see the obvious mistakes Pop made, and might very well repeat them, or (B) saw the mistakes, but wasn't forceful enough with Pop or couldn't convince him of obvious mistakes. I don't know why anyone who doesn't want Pop anymore would want Bud.

i don't know what difference it makes. pop's gonna be here for awhile, like it or not. this thread reminds me of the "let's trade to RJ for Lebron" type of thread

I don't know. Their seems to be 100 or so posters in this forum alone that think they can coach better than Pop. Why not one of them.

Am I the only one aware of the rumour that once Duncan/Pop retire, Bill Self will take over? Because it's been going for awhile and pretty much everybody thinks it's highly credible.

I wonder how good he would be recruiting free agents? It would be different to actually see a coach answer a question when asked by the media.

I'm pretty sure you aren't the only one that is aware of it. There's been articles in the paper about it periodically over the last few years because of the Self-Buford connection.

Mike Brown leaving Cleveland is like Pop leaving the Spurs in '02 (after some bad playoff years but Duncan at his peak)
I think PJ Carlisimo is the greatest assistant coach in the history of the NBA... but I wouldn't really want him as head coach.
I'd like Quin Snyder of the Austin Toros. There's been a number of articles about him. If there was any way to get him as head coach with PJ helping him out, I'd be happy.

Seriously? I'd feel conflicted about that if it actually happened; he seems like a good coach, but him leaving Kansas would leave a coaching vacancy that might pull Turgeon (Kansas alum) away from Texas A&M. Of course there's always a chance they go after someone else, but I'd hate the risk of losing Turgeon.

I just want Pop to get his head out of his ass and actually coach again.
Honestly, I would love to have PJ as an assistant again. He had a great ability at keeping Pop humbled and on track. (about the only person that I know that Pop would actualy listen to)
