adidas, the NBA's on-court apparel licensee since '06, has expanded its rights to include Europe, its home territory. Rival athletic apparel brand Champion has held those rights since '91. Aside from consistent product and marketing globally, the deal gives adidas and the NBA expanded distribution across Europe, birthplace of 48 current NBA players, including Pau Gasol, Dirk Nowitzki and Tony Parker. Especially intriguing to NBA Europe VP/Global Merchandising Benjamin Morel is the deal's promise of an expanded presence in Russia and Eastern Europe.

"We'll have a consistent look, increased marketing programs, and because of that, we'll be able to better leverage performance and sport apparel here," said Moore, in an interview from Germany. adidas NBA apparel will be available in Europe starting in October. Around 30% of NBA licensed product is sold overseas. Europe is the second-largest overseas market for NBA licensees after China, with Italy, France and Spain annually vying for the top spot on the continent. adidas is in the fourth year of an 11-year global sponsorship/licensing deal, through which it sells and supplies uniforms and apparel for the NBA, WNBA and NBA D-League (Terry Lefton, THE DAILY). Morel said, "We are aligning with the market leader in Europe, and we are totally changing our scale.

There are so many opportunities for us (in Europe) and this will be a big extension of our merchandising plan." adidas VP/Global Basketball Lawrence Norman said that "there are plans to aggressively market products in Eastern Europe, Russia and the Middle East." The NBA noted that league merchandise is "currently sold in more than 100,000 stores in 100 countries on six continents." The October launch will "coincide with the NBA's latest series of Europe Live exhibition games, which are due to be announced at the beginning of April" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 3/24).

The National Basketball Association has extended its partnership with Adidas into Europe, with the German sportswear giant given the right to distribute official apparel and merchandise across the continent.

Fans in Europe will now be able to puchase exact replicas of the Adidas uniforms worn by NBA teams. Previously, only rebranded versions made by the NBA’s former European partner Champion Sports were available. Adidas will launch its new range to coincide with the NBA Europe Live series of exhibition games later this year. The two parties will also support the partnership with a series of other marketing and media initiatives, as well as grassroots events.

Sal LaRocca, who is executive vice president in global marketing for the NBA, said: “The expansion of Adidas’ apparel rights in Europe gives us a true global partnership that aligns perfectly with our collective strategy to continue growing the game of basketball. As the NBA continues to grow in popularity throughout Europe, authentic Adidas NBA apparel will be available to more fans than ever before.”

Adidas is currently in the fourth year of an 11-year merchandising partnership as the official uniform and apparel provider for the NBA, WNBA, and NBA D-League, and now boasts full global rights for NBA apparel.

They won't be cheap, they will still be pretty expensive, probably even more than in USA. But at least they are here, at least we can buy all jerseys and they are the official ones of quality. Plus, we dont have to pay for shipping costs and import taxes anymore. Im glad :king
