I know this is the basketball forum, but nobody is in the NFL one. This is also kind of a city thing instead of just football; check it out
A local attorney representing New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson said that Benson is interested in relocating the franchise, possibly to San Antonio

What do y'all think...will we ever get an NFL team and can we support it?

there's a good chance this could happen. benson is familar with the SA area so that might influence his decision, but its most likely that the saint aren't staying in NO, they will go somewhere.

no way in HELL either of the other Texas teams (especially Jerry Jones) is gonna let Tom move the saints to SA. He would have an easier time moving them to LA

Not only that, but all future NFL stadiums must be natural grass. Kinda tough to do with a non-retractable dome. ;)

If Benson moves the Saints, he'll move them to Los Angeles. I'd love to see a team in SA but it would be a stupid financial decision, especially with a team back in Houston. Red was the one that wanted an NFL team in San Antonio so much he conned the city into building him a stadium and now that he actually owns an NFL team he knows better than to move them down here.

In a related story, all seven of them have threatened not to accept any more free tickets to upcoming games.

Benson lives in San Antonio.
I remember during a preseason game or something when NO had to be evacuated, Benson said SA did a great job and that the city was verdue for a team.

The Cardinals ran the same song and dance a few years back. San Antonio is just one of the usual suspects for an owner looking to extort a new stadium deal from his current home. Benson's ties to San Antonio make it look more feasible to someone who doesn't know better. Louisiana politicians probably aren't aware that upgrading the Alamodome to current NFL specs is all but impossible.
If Benson were serious about moving, he'd be talking to LA.

The League has a serious Hard on for a NFL Team in the Los Angeles Market.
they're the only pro league and a successful one if not the most successful without a L.A. team.
the NFL would all but gift wrap a free Stadium Deal and package for a existing Franchise to go to Los Angeles.
Those that wanted a Franchise here in San Antonio could forget it and forgotten it when the Texans were awarded to Houston, bypassing L.A. back when they awarded the 32nd Franchise.
San Antonio seems to be hard core Cowboys country too maybe the die hard Dallas crowd wouldn't want a team here anyways or Jerry Jones and company wouldn't like another team in Texas.
The Saints, Colts, or nobody else is coming to San Antonio in the near future, hell there'll be a NFL Team in Lebanon before one in San Antonio

The Saints won't be in New Orleans for long. I would love to have a team in San Antonio but they will probably be moved to LA.

Would the city support building a new stadium?

no way.
ever.
we are already bumping the sales tax ceiling and people are screaming about property taxes being too high... You can't issue those kind of bonds without a revenue stream to pay for them...and having already been fooled once the people here will NOT vote for any kind of new tax to pay for a $400 million gift to a hypothetical football team...

Definitely. Been there, done that. Red McCombs totally hoodwinked the city and they'll never fall for that garbage again.

What do I think? I think Tom's song and dance is going to make some other city a lot poorer when they pony up for his new stadium (probably either NO or LA).

TheWriter asked me to find examples of when a San Antonio newspaper wrote about rumors of an NFL team moving to San Antonio...
And this one found me.

I'm sure the fact that this entire article was spawned from what Benson's lawyer said didn't enter your mind.
You said that SA writer like to write "hypothetical" articles about the NFL to the SA.
This isn't hypothetical, this is legit seeing how the lawyer of the man who owns the team made the statements.

And yet... the Alamodome operated in the black for many years and more than paid for itself, even without an NFL team. The dome was a good investment.

No... I said, verbatim:
I wonder if writers in San Antonio have the "[Insert NFL Team] May Relocate to San Antonio as [Insert NFL Owner from San Antonio] Battles with [Insert NFL City] over Stadium" built as a macro into Word.
Thanks for playing though.
