SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - A woman who fell asleep on a United Express flight to Philadelphia says she woke up and was shocked to find she was alone on the plane.
Ginger McGuire said no one had awakened her when the plane landed more than three hours earlier. She said she paced the aisle for about 15 minutes early Tuesday until the locked door opened and police demanded identification.
"Waking up to an empty airplane and not being able to get out — it was very horrifying," McGuire, 36, told reporters Thursday as her lawyer announced a lawsuit.
McGuire said she simply fell asleep after a long trip that stretched from Detroit to suburban Washington and, finally, Philadelphia. She said the plane landed Tuesday about 12:30 a.m.
United Airlines spokeswoman Sarah Massier declined to comment because the incident has led to a lawsuit. A message seeking comment was left at Trans States, based in Bridgeton, Missouri. The Transportation Security Administration said it was investigating.
The United Express flight is operated by Trans States Airlines in partnership with United Airlines.
McGuire's attorney, Geoffrey Feiger, said his law firm filed a lawsuit against United and Trans States, alleging negligence, false imprisonment and distress. McGuire lives in Ferndale, a Detroit suburb.

Many people medicate before a flight to calm their nerves. I have a cousin who cannot fly until she's had her 3 double vodka and sodas, and valium. Otherwise, I can't imagine how someone wouldn't wake up after a landing.

can't be that hard for the stewardess to make sure all the seats are empty though...

should be standard protocol!

I agree that this is ridiculous on the part of the airlines, but seriously...horrifying? Being stuck on a plane is horrifying? I'm pretty sure it's exactly like it is the rest of the time, maybe just darker, quieter, and on the fricking ground.

It's not like that plane is going to disappear into oblivion or roll off a cliff. Someone is bound to come back to it sometime, and probably sometime soon. Worst case scenario: a night spent on a plane eating free peanuts.

Not saying it wouldn't be a major inconvenience or that the law shouldn't get involved, but people who get themselves stuck in these situations need to stop acting like it was a near-death experience. At least the blind person didn't even know what was going on...

That is pretty ridiculous. She was only aware she was alone, locked in a plane, for 15 minutes!

I was once locked in a plane, in the air for 15 hours, with some real obnoxious mofos. Now that was terrifying. :)
