I saw on ESPN or something that there was a bunch of teams that looked terrible during qualifiers and matches leading up to the WC, but when the WC started, they went on a tear. Brazil in 2002 is one I remember them putting on there. They were sub-par during qualifiers but they ended up winning it all.

Germany is as usual best in this.

We always have a secret tournament button, its allready scary :lol

Of course it would take a miracle for the Aussies to snatch a win, let alone draw vs the Germans, but man it would awesome to knock those chumps off. I hate how arrogant the Germans always are.

Sorry, but this "article" by your guy is such a bad written piece of paper.

The only thing this guy is really trying is to create a "anti germany" atmosphere trying to point out that whole germany thinks that Australia are scrubs etc.

The well informed german soccer fans now that Australia is a hard to play physical team and that Italia advanced in 2006 just with a penalty in almost overtime. BUT of course Germany will be the favorit and need to win this game. Nothing more nothing less.

Its sad that your guy got even paid for writing such shit.

Forget getting past England. The U.S. team had to get past the elephants first.

The Americans were delayed twice Friday when elephants blocked the road, the second back-up coming as the squad was travelling to its training session at Royal Bafokeng Stadium. The elephant was munching on a tree as the Americans left the Bakubung Bush Lodge, and it moved to the side of the road after about four minutes.

“Everybody had their cellphones out, pictures were being taken,” coach Bob Bradley said. “It was all part of the experience.”

Earlier in the afternoon, a bus carrying 10 players on their way to an open-air market at the entrance to the team hotel got stuck behind an elephant, spokesman Michael Kammarman said. Players had timed the trip to get back to the hotel in time for the start of the World Cup opener between South Africa and Mexico.

Signs outside the U.S. hotel warn: “ELEPHANTS COME CLOSE TO OUR FENCE KEEP A DISTANCE OF 30 Metres AND PLEASE BE QUIET” and “BABOONS ARE DANGEROUS — PLEASE KEEP CLEAR OF THEM AND DO NOT FEED THEM.” Another one reads, “THIS IS BIG 5 TERRITORY TREAT THE ANIMALS WITH RESPECT AND THEY WILL RETURN THE COMPLIMENT.”

“It was cool,” U.S. captain Carlos Bocanegra said of the up-close encounter with the animal kingdom. “A big elephant, just eating on the path out of our hotel.”

It wasn't clear if the same elephant caused both delays.

Nothing kills the joy of soccer like a bunch of wailing vuvuzelas

May 30, 2010 12:00 AM | By Mondli Makhanya
Mondli Makhanya: In my teenage years we always looked forward to the big teams from Johannesburg coming down to the sovereign kingdom by the coast to play the local teams.

Whenever Orlando Pirates, Moroka Swallows and Kaizer Chiefs (yes, they are all in order of importance) came down to play the likes of AmaZulu, Bush Bucks and African Wanderers, we would pile onto the trains and buses and head for King's Park stadium.
We would sing all the way.
The music would continue through the game and on the train all the way back to the township.
And that's the point: there was singing. Lots and lots of it.
Music was as much a trademark of South African football as the tsamaya and the scissor kick.
Right up until the mid-2000s one would hear traditional songs that were the trademark of teams and others that were composed on the spur of the moment.
Some were composed to celebrate specific achievements and landmark events. One such was the Siyoshis' istadium song, which marked Orlando Pirates fans becoming the first to set fire to a stadium back in the mid-1990s in protest against bad refereeing.
There was lots of singing, too, when we hosted the African Cup of Nations in 1996. Who will forget the strains of Shosholoza and Shebeleza Congo as Bafana sprinted to glory?
In two weeks' time, when Bafana Bafana take on Mexico at Soccer City, there will sadly be very little singing in the stands.
We South Africans, a mighty musical nation if ever there was one, will have replaced hearty renditions with the noise of something called the vuvuzela.
This instrument, which emits a sound akin to that of a goat on the way to slaughter, is now at the centre of a growing row in international football.
There is a clamour from coaches, players and broadcasters for Fifa to ban the instrument.
The argument is that it makes it difficult for coaches to bark instructions to players during play. This, the vuvuzela's critics argue, has a direct negative impact on the game.
The broadcasters aver that the vuvuzela's intrusive noise interferes with the sound quality of their transmission.
The onslaught on the vuvuzela was started by Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso, who had to endure it during last year's Confederations Cup.
"That trumpet? It's not nice ... I think Fifa should ban it. It's not really distracting, but it's not a nice sound to hear," he moaned.
His view was echoed by several other players during the course of the tournament.
Last week, football legend and Thailand coach Bryan Robson blamed the vuvuzela for his team's disjointed performance in their friendly against Bafana Bafana at Peter Mokaba stadium. He warned that it would make life difficult for coaches at the World Cup.
"The coaches at the World Cup are definitely going to have to inform their players beforehand that they will have to communicate effectively with each other on the field," the former England and manchester United midfield dynamo said.
"It's very difficult to get any message to the players from the bench. Coaches are going to have to make that known to their players"
Word on the street is that several coaches have voiced their disquiet to their national associations, who have in turn conveyed the message to Fifa.
Predictably, South Africans have been very defensive. A lot of noise has been made about the vuvuzela being part of South African tradition and it being the proverbial 12th man in the Bafana squad.
Even Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has been waxing lyrical about its role in the nation's game plan.
"We have to reinforce that advantage... We want it louder and louder," he was quoted as saying.
Defending the vuvuzela has now become a patriotic must.
It is as if our nationhood is being challenged by pesky foreigners who want to dictate our behaviour on home soil.
On this one I beg to be unpatriotic and for permission to side with the enemies of the vuvuzela.
What the vuvuzela has done to our football is to take away the spontaneity of song. Soccer fans do not compose new songs any more. The tribal chants that you hear at great soccer cathedrals such as White Hart Lane and the Santiago Bernabeu are rarely heard in our soccer grounds these days. Except for the Bloemfontein Celtic support base, the music in South African stadiums has been drowned by the dreadful instrument.
The vuvuzela issue is likely to be a major off-field controversy during next month's tournament. There will be inflamed passions among its defenders and detractors.
South Africans will argue, just like our foursome big chief argues in favour of polygamy, that it has been part of our tradition.
What we as South Africans should be careful about, is to strike a nationalistic pose and accuse the instrument's opponents of a superiority complex.
Let us let the vuvuzela go and get that singing spirit back. That is what memories are made of.
Not the sound of a goat in distress.

Come on fifa!!! Isnt it time to ban these? Some teams will now even hold their trainings private, because they cant stand the sound anymore.

And the worst thing is, it is ruined for the future too. We will now see these vuvuzelas at every other tournament in the future, no matter where the tournament will be organised :bang :depressed

Football fans executed for watching World Cup June 15, 2010 - 1:08PM
.Two Somali football fans have been killed by Islamic militants after being caught watching World Cup matches.

The deaths happened on Saturday near the capital Mogadishu when members of the Hizbul Islam group stormed a house where people were watching Nigeria play Argentina.

A further 10 people were arrested by the group, which has imposed a strict version of Islam in the areas it controls in southern and central Somalia.

The next night, another 30 people were arrested as they watched the Germany-Australia game in the town of Afgoye.

Sheikh Mohamed Abdi Aros, a spokesman for the militants, said Somalia should respect their ban on the World Cup and focus on pursuing jihad. "We are warning all the youth of Somalia not to dare watch these World Cup matches," he said. "It is a waste of money and time and they will not benefit anything or get any experience by watching mad men jumping up and down."

Tony Parker ranks NBA point guards, talks World Cup

San Antonio Spurs guards Tony Parker joined the show to talk about the NBA and the World Cup. Here are some his takes:

-- Parker ranked his fellow point guards. He thinks he's in the top five. But Chris Paul is No. 1, followed closely by Deron Williams. Then also Steve Nash and Chauncey Billups. He said Rajon Rondo is sixth.

-- Parker said he once played soccer. "I was pretty good. I played between 7 and 10," Parker said. "Then when I saw Michael Jordan playing I decided to switch sports."

Parker said his father was actually from Chicago and that helped him get into the sport.

-- Parker is a bit worried about France soccer. And he's not a fan of vuvuzelas. "It's annoying," Parker said. "When you watch on TV. It's like man, this is non-stop."

sincerely you don't understand the game, no offense.

As a spur fan remember the epic spurs-detroit finals when only in one game there were more than 90pts ... what you see right now is the equivalent in soccer, alot of great defense/effort at this world cup, nobody is guaranteed to be blown out, balanced matches, alot of tension on both contenders(pressed to score more by the equilibrium in terms of power) and bottom-teams (to make their country proud/ rise their stock/ put themselves on the map)

It's really a great cup with DECENT refes ... that's one you gotta appreciate.

What's not great is the low attendence (logical, far from both europe and south america) and the damned vuvezelas.

What an amazing fail:

Group D: Germany’s 4-0 win against Australia was one of the few matches I didn’t watch, but the scoreline somewhat speaks for itself. Again, it’s the more physical teams, and the more technical teams, that seem to be thriving amidst the altitude changes, the vuvuzelas, and the Jabulani, whereas the prettier, more finesse sides seem to be somewhat disoriented. And German soccer is a lot of things, but it isn’t pretty.

A proof that you just should shut up if u didnt see a game.

S. African killed by wife, kids in TV spat

Associated Press

JOHANNESBURG -- Police say a South African man who wanted to watch a World Cup match instead of a religious program was beaten to death by his family in the northeastern part of the country.

David Makoeya, a 61-year-old man from the small village of Makweya, Limpopo province, fought with his wife and two children for the remote control on Sunday because he wanted to watch Germany play Australia in the World Cup. The others, however, wanted to watch a gospel show.

"He said, 'No, I want to watch soccer,'" police spokesman Mothemane Malefo said Thursday. "That is when the argument came about.

"In that argument, they started assaulting him."

Malefo said Makoeya got up to change the channel by hand after being refused the remote control and was attacked by his 68-year-old wife Francina and two children, 36-year-old son Collin and 23-year-old daughter Lebogang.

Malefo said he was not sure what the family used to kill Makoeya.

"It appears they banged his head against the wall," Malefo said. "They phoned the police only after he was badly injured, but by the time the police arrived the man was already dead."

All three were arrested Sunday night, but Lebogang was released on $200 bail Tuesday, Malefo said. The other two are still being held in custody.

Malefo said the mother and son will reappear in the local Seshego Magistrates Court on July 27.

"He was always a happy man, never violent," Makoeya's nieces, Miriam and Anna, told the Daily Sun newspaper. "On Saturday, we saw him the last time at a funeral."

The World Cup, being played in Africa for the first time, started Friday and runs through July 11.

Spain will knock out Brazil in the round of 16.

after seeing spain's defense on the counter attack i doubt it.

Furthermore, nobody is a lock. There are many types of teams out there with different personnel and different mental strength.

Arg has the personnel only in offense, their defense is a walking red card no speed approx marking AND it seems no mental strength (definitely not gonna win with diego without a MAJOR miracle you can bet on it).

bra can get complacent easily and don't have pressing strength with kaka and robinho easily disappearing in games, teams that kill midfield and are more physical then them will give them trouble .. dunga is smart to know this and to pick cup players in the roster.

spa are traditional world cup chokers their mental strength is always questioned (look at their goddamned roster throught their history and then try to explain why they were not a semis/quarters usual as all other teams with tradition) .. ooh and let's not forget not playing a true targetman while overplaying on the wing which puts alot of pressure on what often becomes stretch defense (swi says hi)

ita can grind/luck/cheat out any team (2006 best example remember their training sessions?:lmao i bet you zidane will say they train in language& culture too) .. never underestimate such shit tactics.

ger don't have the overall talent plain and simple, they have good not great players and they play the right/grit way, a great contender, but IF they meet a more talented team on a good day the will lose (spain 2008, ita 2006, bra 2002, etc)

portugal are a one trick pony (unfortunately for them tactics is null, thus being reduced to a ronaldo team) .. a team i sincerely hate for its idiocy. No way these dumbfucks are winning squat, they're like the denver nuggets:lol

netherlands are another hot-and-cold team that can beat anybody yet still be beaten by any team(russia at euro for ex, portugal in 2006 .. good teams but not contenders .. should mean something right). Mental strength has always been questioned. In my eyes they are ALOT like spain (now AND throughout their history)

mexico are pretenders, let's not kid ourselves.

ooh england, almost forgot of them :lmao, why the most chokerish nation to ever assemble a groups of 23 people i might add. For them to win the cup has the same possibility of god saving the queen .. personally.... they are simply NOT a team. not with capello, not with that gay coach with red hankerchief, not sven gorna .. they simply can't play like a team.
More objective: each and every time they play a good team they have problems, moreover, they have problems sometimes even with inferior sides.

even us homers shouln't dare think of us being anything near a conteder, even mexico has a better chance not to mention talent and they are pretenders.

i agree .. a good generation awaits mexico but you woes will remain tactics, mental strength and defense. I simply don't believe you/usa will contend in the next 20 years based on pure tradition (that might sound dubious but it's not, cause tradition singles out contender pretty well and history does repeat itself, just ask ger/ita/bra)

I don't like Maradona either, but I also don't like Pele, he's the worst kind of star imho, a guy that tries to act nice and correct for the cameras, but every now and then he reveals his true self. He's an envious old man that has trashed all the current great players at some point, he's also a social climber that is able to suckup anybody just to be around power.

cahill tackling a guy without the ball from behind

true, i remember being in brazil 3 years ago and guys from the security company (brazilians) talked about how great pele was and the like and one of them (50ish old dude) said something about pele throwing teammates under the bus or some kobe-esque stuff.

I can't say about pele much other than he was a goalscoring machine and that he gets beyond-jordan treatment from the press erasing any mistake. I can say that i saw both maradona and zidane at two world cups each and I watched alot of juventus/real madrid with zidane so i am quite sure i know how these guys behave.

Zidane is really a class act and maybe the greatest footballing mind I ever saw, the way he controlled the flow of the game is clearly beyond past and present generations. I consider him the goat.

this world cup is awesome. only thing that is outstandingly negative is the jabulani. I have never seen so many goalkeeper mistakes at this level in my life so there has to be something with the ball.

There are more goalkeeper mistakes than the last 2 cups combined and we're only to the 2nd games in the group ffs. Casillas sure knew what he said.

I do, so far this WC it's right up there with the one in 2002 as the worst I've seen. And stats help me back my thought. However it's true that as the tournament progresses the play it's getting better (maybe 'cause they're getting used to the ball). Hopefully this improvement continues.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/world-cup/story/_/id/5305482/ce/us/group-stage-scenarios?cc=5901&ver=us

Here are the scenarios for each team advancing for groups that have completed two games. Click here for group standings. Here are tiebreakers if teams finish even on points:

1. Goal differential.
2. Goals scored.
3. Head to head (if there are three teams tied, then results between three teams are calculated with the first two criteria).
4. Draw of lots

GROUP A

Uruguay advances with:
(a) Wins group with win or tie versus Mexico
(b) Loss and France-South Africa tie
(c) Loss and winner of France-South Africa does not make up tiebreakers

Mexico advances with:
(a) Win group with win versus Uruguay
(b) Tie versus Uruguay
(c) Loss and France-South Africa tie
(d) Loss and winner of France-South Africa doesn't make up tiebreaker

France/South Africa advance with:
(a) Win and and make up tiebreaker on loser of Mexico-Uruguay
(b) Both are out with a tie or a Mexico-Uruguay tie

GROUP B

Argentina advances with:
(a) Win or tie versus Greece
(b) South Korea tie/loss versus Nigeria
(c) Loss as long as both South Korea and Greece do not make up tiebreakers

South Korea advances with:
(a) Win versus Nigeria and Greece does not either (1) win by greater margin, or (2) win by same margin and score 2+ more goals
(b) Tie and Greece tie/loss

Greece advances with:
(a) Win versus Argentina and South Korea tie/loss
(b) Win by greater margin than South Korea
(c) Win by same margin as South Korea and score 2+ more goals
(d) Tie and South Korea loss
(e) Win by 3+ goals

Nigeria advances with:
(a) Win versus South Korea and Argentina win

GROUP C

USA advances with:
(a) Win versus Algeria on Wednesday
(b) Tie and Slovenia-England tie IF England does not outscore USA by 2+ goals
(c) Tie and England loss

Slovenia advances with:
(a) Win or tie versus England
(b) Loss AND USA tie vs Algeria
(c) Loss and Algeria win as long as Algeria doesn't make up tiebreakers*

England advances with:
(a) Win versus Slovenia
(b) Tie AND USA-Algeria tie AND outscore USA by 3 goals

Algeria advances with:
(a) Win versus USA AND Slovenia win/tie versus England
(b) Win versus USA AND Slovenia loss versus England AND makes up tiebreakers on Slovenia

Note: If the U.S. draws with Algeria and England draws with Slovenia, and England scores exactly two more goals than the U.S., the U.S. and England would be even on all tiebreakers for second place. The tie would be broken by drawing lots ... aka, a coin flip.

GROUP D

The simplest scenarios are that Ghana, Germany and Serbia all advance with a win. Australia must win and get help.

Ghana advances with:
(a) Win or tie versus Germany
(b) Loss and Australia-Serbia tie IF Serbia does not make up tiebreakers
(c) Loss and Australia win IF Australia does not make up tiebreakers (Australia is way behind on goal differential)

Germany advances with:
(a) Win versus Ghana
(b) Tie and Serbia-Australia tie IF Serbia does not make up tiebreakers
(c) Tie and Australia win IF Australia does not make up tiebreakers

Serbia advances with:
(a) Win versus Australia
(b) Tie and Ghana win
(c) Tie and Ghana-Germany tie AND make up tiebreakers on Germany

Australia advances with:
(a) Win versus Serbia and Ghana win
(b) Win and Germany win and make up tiebreakers on Ghana
(c) Win and Ghana-Germany tie and make up tiebreakers on Germany (not likely)

GROUP E

Netherlands has advanced. Netherlands wins the group with:
(a) Win or a tie versus Cameroon
(b) Loss AND a Denmark-Japan tie
(c) Loss IF the Denmark-Japan winner does not make up tiebreakers

Japan advances with:
(a) Win or tie versus Denmark

Japan wins group with:
(a) Win AND a Netherlands loss AND by making up tiebreakers on Netherlands

Denmark advances with:
(a) Win versus Japan

Denmark wins group with:
(a) Win AND a Netherlands loss AND by making up tiebreakers on Netherlands

Cameroon has been eliminated.

GROUP F

Paraguay advances with:
(a) Win/tie versus New Zealand
(b) Loss AND Italy tie verus Slovakia
(c) Loss and Slovakia win as long as Slovakia doesn't make up tiebreakers

Italy advances with:
(a) Win versus Slovakia
(b) Tie and New Zealand loss
(c) Tie AND Paraguay-New Zealand tie IF Italy outscores New Zealand

New Zealand advances with:
(a) Win versus Paraguay
(b) Tie AND Italy-Slovakia tie IF New Zealand outscores Italy

Slovakia advances with:
(a) Win versus Italy AND Paraguay win/tie versus New Zealand
(b) Win versus Italy AND Paraguay loss versus New Zealand AND make up tiebreakers versus Paraguay

yea if uruguay didnt care about the 3rd place game in Copa America than mexico didnt give a fuck about yesterday's game, they let you guys have it because we wanted the rematch vs argentina because of 06' :rolleyes

and mexico might not have won a copa america yet in the six times theyve participated, but 2 second place finishes and 3 third place finishes aint too shabby son...especially considering the shady officiating mexico receives from conmebol not just in copa america but in other competitions like libertadores and the sudamericana.

ElNono

Rooney was the least of the problems. That defense however, it's going to have to get quicker and more dynamic, the way the offense did with quick and tiny Dafoe in there.

Good luck against Germany in the next game. I think they look very beatable these days. Ghana should have scored 3 on them if they were 10% more soccer savvy.

True, but watching the games against Algeria and today's game, there were plenty of miscommunication back there. I don't know if it's the lack of Ferdinand, or what. I still remember a very bad fuckup by Terry early on today that released an opposing player all alone. It was a miracle it wasn't a goal.
They need to tighten that defense a bit.

Honestly I dont know since Uruguay's only won two world cups.

But still man think about how idiotic your attitude is. Its like if 50 years from now (hopefully Im not dead lol), the Spurs turn into a middle of the pack team in the NBA, and yet I act like theyre still part of the NBA elite because of titles from the early 2000s. Its beyond stupid.

I hope Aguirre realizes that everyone's starting to notice how bad his lineups have been, and that he needs to make a change against a great team like Argentina

From Rafa Marquez' mouth--Carillo is the one doing all the tactical shit so he's the one to blame. Aguirre is more about being a motivator which is pathetic considering he's making like $2 million for being the coach. Its definitely bullshit that Franco keeps on playing despite not doing jack in two straight World Cups though. This would be my ideal lineup taking into account Vela's injury and basically conceding that Perez will start at GK:

-------------------------Perez-----------------------------
Juarez--------Moreno-----------Maza----------------Salcido
------------------------Marquez--------------------------
-------------Torrado-------------------Guardado-----------
Barrera-------------------------------------------Dos Santos
-----------------------Chicharito----------------------------

That's the best Mexico has to offer and god knows we need the best we got to be able to pull off the upset.

There are like 20 or 30 books available for you to learn more about the history of the World Cup... that will teach you why FIFA allows Uruguay to have 4 stars there :tu

OR you can also read some of the posts on the Argentina - South Korea thread where I had to remind the Argies that Uruguay could be interpreted > Argentina in WC accomplishments... :wakeup

Two shot dead at party over argument about World Cup match
June 28, 2010 - 1:23PM

Two men were shot to death by a gunman at a party in Texas after a heated argument over an upcoming World Cup soccer match, the online edition of The Dallas Morning News said.

Four men were apparently involved in the early morning altercation at a house in Dallas, Texas, police spokesman Gerardo Monreal told the daily.

One of the men got a handgun from his car and shot two men, aged 17 and 28, the spokesman added, without providing identities for either the victims or the gunman, who ended up also shooting himself in the leg.

The gunman was arrested and was recovering at an area hospital, Monreal said.

The police spokesman also did not mention which World Cup match the argument was about.
