NEW YORK, May 12 – Detroit Pistons’ center Ben Wallace, recently named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year, led the voting for the 2004-05 NBA All-Defensive Teams, the NBA announced today.
Wallace, who is making his fourth consecutive appearance on the All-Defensive First Team, is joined on the First Team by Kevin Garnett of the Minnesota Timberwolves, who was named to the All-Defensive First Team for the sixth consecutive season; San Antonio Spurs’ Bruce Bowen and Tim Duncan, making their fifth and eighth consecutive All-Defensive Team appearances, respectively; and Larry Hughes of the Washington Wizards, who makes his first career appearance on NBA All-Defensive Team.
A three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Wallace finished the 2004-05 regular season ranked second in rebounding (12.2 rpg) and total blocks (176) and fifth in blocks per game (2.38). Garnett ranked first in rebounding (13.5 rpg) and first in double-doubles (69) this season, while averaging 1.48 steals and 1.37 blocks. Bowen and Duncan helped the Spurs hold opponents to a league-low 88.4 points per game, led by Bowen’s stifling one-on-one defense and Duncan’s 2.64 blocks per game (3rd in the NBA). Hughes recorded 2.89 steals per game, becoming the first player to top 2.85 steals per game since Gary Payton in 1995-96.
The NBA All-Defensive Second Team consists of Detroit Pistons forward Tayshaun Prince (21 points) and guard Chauncey Billups (17 points), Denver Nuggets center Marcus Camby (21 points), Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko (17 points), New Jersey Nets guard Jason Kidd and Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade (16 points). Prince, Billups, Camby and Wade are all making their first appearance on the All-Defensive Team, while Kidd makes his seventh appearance and Kirilenko his second.
The voting panel consisted of the NBA’s 30 head coaches, who were asked to select NBA All-Defensive First and Second Teams by position. Coaches were not permitted to vote for players from their own team. Two points were awarded for a First Team vote and one point was awarded for a Second Team vote.

I know these things are reputational and inertial in nature, but no way in Hell does KG earn this spot on the first team.

Props to Duncan and Bowen. I think Tony Parker should make the second team one of these years.
Amare Stoudemire got a vote? That person should be banned from NBA arenas.

Nice. :smokin
What else is impressive is that the Spurs 4 primary players, Duncan, Bowen, Ginobili and Parker all were in the top 20 vote gettters.

Bruce and Tim both deserved to be there. It's a pretty good list. I think that some on the second team got hurt by the fact that the team needs to include players of all positions. Larry Hughes is a good defender, but I would argue that Camby, Prince, and maybe even Kirilenko (despite the time he missed) would have been better choices had it been possible. I think that the voters should be allowed to select the top five player for the team, regardless of position.
I've been somewhat of a Kidd fan throughout the years because I like how he plays the game, but I'm not sure that he belonged on the second team. He still has good size for a point guard and plays smart defense, but quicker point guards give him trouble sometimes. He's not as quick as he used to be.

I couldn't have left Iverson off of the second team, either. He anticipates the passing lanes better than any other player in the league and he doesn't take very many plays off. I think he would have been a better choice than Billups and Wade.

That's a pretty killer 1st team right there...Duncan..KG..Big Ben.
Props to Duncan and Bowen.

That is interesting that they slid Bruce to a guard so he would be on the first team.
He pretty much started as small forward all season.

I didn't know they could put 6 players on a team, though (2nd Team has 6 players, not 5).

LMAO :lol :lol :lol :lol
anyway, you really have to question D-Wade and J-Kidd on that second team defense, it makes you wonder if reputation plays too much of a role for selection.

Yeah, but he often worked over guards like Ray Allen if they were the bigger threat. I hope the refs-- and Allen-- take due notice of the opinion of the coaches.

They did it least year, too, as he, KG and Tim were all first team. Not a problem in my book, as he guards everyone from tiny PGs to tall SFs.
There was a vote tie for the last spot on Second team. That's why they had 6 players.

I was thinking the same thing and wondering why no one else thought that was weird. Maybe I'm just being a homer, but even Tony Parker is a better defender then Kidd this year...especially considering the fact that Kidd missed a lot of the season due to injury. Furthermore, they picked Hughes it seems on the first team due to his steals per game...well AI was in the top three for steals also. I would put him ahead of Kidd and Wade.
Wade is a great offensive player, but when I watch Heat games, I just don't see defense that warrants being on the All NBA SECOND defensive team.
Maybe instead of Yao comming out with that new movie of his, Wade should have come out with one, "The Year of the Wade." :)

Wade is so incredibly overrated it's scary. He's very good and he had a terrific game the other night, but damn. They are turning him into Jordan, and just discounting the fact that he plays with a guy who makes everyone better just by hauling his fat one-legged butt on the court. Since LeBron isn't in the playoffs, they must just need a target for their heaps of praise.

It's really hard to vote for Shaq for all NBA defense when he is walking back up the floor while the other team is running a fast break...and he does it all the time...

Also hard to vote for Shaq when the Heat have to pull him at the end of tight games and insert Mourning so they can cover the pick and roll.
btw I like Wade but even his own teammates say Eddie Jones is the best perimeter defender on the team.

Yeah, but if he were not hurt, he would probably have won DPOY, so it is nice to at least acknowledge his defensive prowess

How can a player be considered dominant when he has never ever gotten on the 1st team All Defenseive Team????

Amare Stoudamire is not a terrible defender. It's not like he's Nash.
Since coaches aren't allowed to vote for their own players, I'd bet money that it was probably George Karl that voted for Amare.
