They've gone too far with the PS3 controller. At this rate, kids are going to need an Associates to figure out how to turn the damn thing on.

I'm going with a Nintendo Revolution, no doubt about it. XboX 2 is actually Xbox 1.5 and the PS3 is for graphics whores/tech geeks who don't care about the gameplay.

Gaming hits next level with Xbox 360 By Mike Snider and Steven Kent, USA TODAY
Fri May 13, 6:19 AM ET

Microsoft fired the opening salvo in the war of the next-generation videogames Thursday night by unveiling the successor to the Xbox on an MTV special.

Sleek and off-white, the new Xbox 360 system looks like an iPod on steroids. Scheduled to arrive before the holiday season (no price set), the Xbox 360 will usher players into what Microsoft calls the "third stage" in the evolution of games - one of high-definition images and larger environments to be explored through greatly expanded multiplayer and online games.

"Remember going from 2-D games to 3-D? We're going from today's 3-D worlds to high-definition worlds that really will look like a movie or television show," chief Xbox officer Robbie Bach says. All games will be in HD, but only HDTVs will show them at highest quality. Microsoft estimates that 100 million homes worldwide will have advanced TV sets by 2008. "That is going to lead to fundamental changes in expectations, and Xbox 360 is going to deliver."

By releasing Xbox 360 this year, Microsoft hopes to leapfrog Sony, which is expected to announce plans for next year's successor to the PS2 next week at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in L.A. "Sony was dominant in terms of market share this round. It's going to be hard for them to match that (again)," says David Cole of DFC Intelligence. "With Microsoft getting out first, it's going to be more of a level playing field."

Nintendo also will reveal plans for its new system, Revolution, due in 2006. The system will support wireless Internet and play DVD movies plus current GameCube games.

No word yet on whether the Xbox 360 will play current Xbox games. If not, that would disappoint many of the devoted 20 million Xbox owners who will want to play their old games on the new system. And retailers may not be thrilled about devoting space to a fourth console game system (including the current Xbox, PS2 and GameCube), along with the growing lineup of portables (Nintendo's DS and Game Boy SP, plus Sony's PSP), says Richard Doherty of The Envisioneering Group.

Beyond that, the added detail needed for HD games may tax developers and divert resources from making games for other systems this Christmas. "Artists do want to see this higher quality, but it is adding to the cost and time of developing a game," Doherty says.

And Sony's next system is expected to have twice the power of the Xbox 360, so Microsoft may not be able to siphon off many Sony fans. "It may not be the full giant step the PS2 was from the PlayStation," Doherty says, "but it certainly marks the beginning of a new era of games designed to be richer ... and to depend on multiplayer gaming as their main mode: not you vs. the machine, but you vs. a friend."

One Xbox 360 game in development from Rare, Perfect Dark Zero, supports up to 64 players at a time. Most current games top out at 16.

"In every transition, processing power and memory take a certain level of jump," says Glenn Entis, chief visual officer of Electronic Arts, which is examining the possibilities of the new technology. Environments will be more lifelike - you'll see leaves on trees moving in golf games, and the ball will behave differently when hit out of varying degrees of rough. Athletes' faces may be so well defined that "you will start to read the eyes of NBA players, so that head fakes and no-look elements become a part of the game," he says.

Microsoft appears to be on the right track, says John Davison, editorial director of Ziff Davis' videogame magazines. "It's debatable about whether we really need another Xbox right now, but there's no denying the excitement about 360."

Nintendo is falling out of the race between Microsoft and Sony.

I don't think Nintendo can ever truly fall out of the race in video games ever. They are just too important for video gaming that I doubt people would let them. Without Nintendo, none of us would be here talking about gaming like this.

Nintendo is to video games as Magic/Bird is to the NBA. They may be long gone, but they can never be forgotten. Nintendo put video gaming on the map, and Magic/Bird put the NBA on the map.

It doesn't really matter Microsoft even admitted they got creamed by the PS2 and are hoping with the early release of the X-BOX 360 they'll do better and I'm talking about the Game Cube (Ninentdo's company) that's a pile of crap except Resident Evil 4 all the titles are about Barney strikes back or Mario 3D.

They said it will be $299, or $360 (shocker) if you want the home theater capabilities (comes with a remote, wireless media center connection to play content from your PC).

Id go with the home entertainment hook up just for the fact of getting it hookd up with my sound system.

I wish they would take input on there sports games, I wish they would make them more realistic, like say

spurs vs clippers, spurs go on a run, clippers take a time out, the PA announcer gets excited, and the fans stand the whole 9 yards.

That would be way to hard to program the AI to react like that and EA distributes the sports games evenly to all three consoles and FPS suck on the console, I rented Area 51, it looks wonderful and is probably a very good game but, I didn't even bother to burn it because of the awful console controls and now it's lying on a table for 5 days.

The PS2 had RPGs - that's why they sold so many. Personally, I REALLY don't care about those damn things - RPGs you say? What the hell are those? Those games where you run around hitting fantasy creatures and using magic to gain a level, and then you do the same damn thing again and again? I'm too impatient for that... And the PS2 had the worst graphics from all of the systems - they're so bad that they can't even make the version of REsident Evil 4 on the PS2 because it's so much worse than the Cube graphically

The XBox was a waste of money. What worthwile games did you get apart form Halo, which they are milking for every single penny it's worth, BTW. I'm serious, soon even those people who buy Master Chief action figures won't buy Halo in the near future. And those other damn games that you get a gun and you go around pressing the trigger not knowing what the hell you're supposed to be doing (because there really isn't a purpose to the game) just because it's "fun" to blow up stuff.

I don't mind if you talk as long as you don't mind that I'm not listening. Stop being so ignorant. You too E20, "the only games that it has are Barney Strikes Back..." NICE ONE!!!11 I'm glad to see you aren't letting your education get in the way of your ignorance.

Nintendo isn't falling out of the race - in fact, they made the most money from all the companies, despite less sales. Microsoft lost $8 billion, just to earn their console a reputation and hope that the XBox2 will sell. If it doesn't the shareholders wont be happy, and there will not be another entry.

By releasing the Xbox 2 so early, the Nintendo Revolution and the PS3 will be leagues ahead technologically. Also, because they want to be able to play Xbox games on the 360, the XBox live service will have to be the same. It will soon get outdated, and the new Nintendo and Sony services will blow it out of the water (the Nintendo one is free too).

The 360 may use the time before the others are released to its advantage, and get a huge lead, but I doubt it. As soon as the other 2 come out, the Xbox will lose its mystique, as well as sales. This, of course, will be determined by how many developers back up the Xbox.

Sony Unveils New PlayStation 3 Consoles By MATT SLAGLE, AP Technology Writer
52 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES - Sony Corp (SNE.N). unveiled three flavors of its new PlayStation 3 video game machine Monday in what is likely a new round of console wars with rivals Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co.

The new machine, set for release in the spring of 2006, is about the same size as the current generation PlayStation 2 but has a more rounded look. Besides black, the PS3 will be available in silver and white.

Sony officials said the PS3's new processor technology — called Cell — will offer high performance for movie-like realism in games, high-definition movies and other features.

"The PS3 is truly is a system to be placed in the center of the living room," said Ken Kutaragi, creator of the original PlayStation console as well as the more recent PlayStation Portable handheld.

Prices or a specific lineup of games that will be available were not were not provided, though Sony showed off numerous demonstrations of games in development.

The PS3 will use the Blu-ray disc format, capable of holding 50 gigabytes of information, which is about six times the capacity of existing DVDs, as well as slots for memory cards, a detachable hard drive and Bluetooth wireless for up to seven wireless controllers.

The PS3 also will be able to run the thousands of games available for the older PS2 and PS1, officials said.

One demonstration PS3 game showed a fiery battle between a soldier and a robot in an intricately detailed futuristic city. Individual tattoos and bits of blood could be seen on the warrior's face, while shafts of light beamed down from the rafters of a metallic corridor.

The announcement comes two days ahead of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, an annual industry gathering in Los Angeles.

Last week, Microsoft showcased its new Xbox 360 in a 30-minute special on MTV.

Microsoft said it would begin selling Xbox 360 in North America around Thanksgiving, and Europe and Asia by the end of the year.

No pricing details have been announced on any of the systems.

Nintendo will discuss its new console, code-named Revolution, further on Tuesday morning.

In 2004, Sony's older PlayStation 2 led the U.S. console wars with 43 percent of the market, according to Jupiter Research. The original Xbox was a distant No. 2 with 19 percent, followed by Nintendo's GameCube at 14 percent. The remainder included handheld game systems.

But by 2010, Xbox 360 would grab the lead with 38 percent of the market, followed by Sony with 32 percent and Nintendo with 22 percent, Jupiter forecasts.

Microsoft is taking an entertainment hub approach with Xbox 360.

The curvy, white machine plays DVD movies and lets users listen to music, view photos and do real-time video chats with friends and relatives around the world.

The Xbox 360 features three processors, a removable 20-gigabyte hard drive, a custom graphics chip and built-in wireless for cable-free access to the company's Xbox Live online multiplayer service.

In the end PS3 360 PWNS!!!!!

I'd still take an Xbox over the Playstation.

The thing I always laughed and got rather annoyed with is how people praised the PS2 for being backwards compatible with old PS games. Come on man, give me a break...if you want to play Playstation 1 games, go bust out the Playstation, if you want new games bust out the PS2.

I think I should raise a stink to Microsoft over the Xbox 360...it has no place where I can shove my Super Mario Bros 3 cartridge so I can play the game on it.... :rolleyes

That system has a 3-core RISC processor clocked at 3.2 GHz!?!?!

$299? Microsoft is going to be taking a huge initial hit on this system. I mean, PowerPC chips are expensive as hell (and a hell of a lot more powerful than x86 cpus like Pentium, Athlon, Athlon64, etc.) ... I don't see how they can build this system for anything even in the ballpark of $299. $299 for this setup is absolutely insane.

WTF!? X-BOX is promoting the same feature to Crap60. It's gonna be probably printed on every box:

Can play your X-BOX classics (if there are any) on X-BOX 360!

And seriously if you had your PS1 in your room somewhere and you had a PS2 already hooked up to the TV and wanted to play a PSX game what would the average person do?

Baseline:
They're hoping that everybody will buy at least 10 copies of every Madden game released for the 360 to make any profit. The orginal X-BOX started out with a huge defecit. Both Baldurs Gate games are awesome games. I loved them...I spent so many hours with my cousin playing that game. I like the second one more than the first, only because you can do more things with your amulets and stuff.

I wouldn't waste a CD on playing the games on a PS2/Xbox/Cube when you can just download the emulators and mods and play them on your PC. It's a waste of space and resources on the system, I didn't know the 360 was backwards compatible. If it is, then that's garbage too. Why would you want to buy a "next gen" system to play games from the last generation?

This is where I disagree Duff. I think its great because it lets you play the old games that you love. I still own my NES just so that I can bust out Final Fantasy and kick butt like I used to do in 8 bit fashion. I mean i bet theres better graphics in a calculator than that game but dammit it's a classic.

Hehe sorry to get off topic I just thought of a few off my head

Splinter Cells 1,2,3
All the Rainbow Sixes
Counter Strike(was this PS2 released also?)
Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic

We can count Doom 3 just to help my point :p

Need to keep thinking

The original XBox's hardware was much cheaper at the time than the new XBox's will be when it's released. The chip was a 750 MHz P3 I think, with an Nvidia Ti200 graphics board, which was not considered top of the line at the time. This system is pretty freaking advanced.

That is one powerful mother. I'm going to buy one just to mod into a new computer. For $300 I'd be crazy not to (considering that there's already a GCC for PowerPC, so that I could build a linux system on it).

Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic

I think that pretty much beats anything on PS2..that is a brilliant game.

And Baseline has the price point been set at 300? I thought it would be cheaper since all the game companies let the consoles go for as cheap as they can and make up all the money on the game sales

Geez, I thought to be a classic it has to be on that particular system.
You can have your coveted Splinter Cell even thought Splinter Cell 4 is supposed to Debut on the PS2/3 and your Doom 3. And nowhere have I heard that SquareEnix/Soft is gonna hand over a Final Fantasy license to X-BOX and if they did it would probably go down in flames like that FF for GameCube. And Duff StarWar Knights of the Old Republic!? :lmao Give me a break I can give you games better than that on the PSX! KOTR involved you to choose a side and talk to people and choose crappy light saber commands on your foes hardly an RPG I would continue playing and takes away the real time light saber combat fun.

I forgot Microsoft had money issues. Poor Bill.
Bill Gates money solely depends on STOCK. One mishap and he would end up like this:

I agree FF7 was by far one of the best. But the game has name recognition. It has millions of fans. I mean damn you got people dressing up as characters and camping in line to buy it (in Japan). As long as their being made they will continue to sell 90 billion copies worldwide.

If Nintendo was smart they would get exclusive rights to it which would never happen. That along with all the Zeldas would guarantee sales

PS. I loved Ninja Gaiden on Xbox great remake. Still thinking :lol

Actually Tecmo made Ninja Gaiden not Square. And DMC and NG were similar in the fact that they both had juggle combos meters. But I dont know about the rest of it.....well both fighting demons.

The most truly original game that was also great was on the Gamecube called Pikmin, but since it was on GC nobody really played it.

I heard the same thing. But, I usually prefer to wait so they can clean out all the bugs. Remember how the PS2 used to come with the memory card to use the DVD player. And then I believe alot of Japanese PS2's had the dreaded Disc Read Error.

I just remember hearing that Xbox wants the release before the PS2 they believe that the reason they lost the last console war was because PS2 came out first. Which can be made a valid argument. But as you have stated E20 I think Xbox was/is seen as inferior in people's eyes. So I dont know if the earlier release date will help.

Depends on the programming...but majority of developers have 720p or 1080i.
