I remember seeing a couple of posters stating they are metal fans.
Still, I'm wondering if any of you guys are into metal as well.
From the other posts in the Club Forums I read that some of you like the old-school bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, AC/DC and even some newer stuff like Type O Negative.
Just wondering if anyone of you is into ... well ... more extreme metal like the Gothenburg sound or Progressive. Like In Flames, Soilwork, Dark Tranquillity, Eluveitie, Paradise Lost or even into Power Metal like Blind Guardian or Hammerfall.
Any constructive posts will be appriciated - to any other posters: Feel free to troll.

Is Nickelback considered metal?
Top 5 (some more metal than others)
Faith No More (I'll be at their show in Philly next month)
Fear Factory (Was just at the Trocadero with Prong last night-fucking missed it due to work)
Type O negative (halloween night 2003- most fun concert I've ever been to)
Meshuggah
Prong -(awesome live. saw open for White Zombie in 95)

I'm a big time "metal" fan. My love of the genre spans many of the sub-genres. I've been into hard rock/heavy metal my entire life. From Led Zeppelin to The 69 Eyes, I'm a card carrying metalhead.
But, as someone else said, the "bro rock" makes me want to yack.
Problem is, there are soooooo many sub-genres it's almost indistinguishable.
Metalcore
Hardcore
Deathcore

Ah, Sisk said just what was on my mind upon seeing this thread. There are a million types of metal, including heavy, nu, alternative, etc.
I consider myself a metalhead even though I enjoy a wide variety of genres and artists like OneRepublic, Lady Gaga etc.
My three favorite bands are Disturbed (nu-metal), In Flames (melodic death metal) and All That Remains (metalcore). Some songs I would recommend from each of them
Disturbed - there are too many good ones to list
Just Stop
Inside the Fire
Stupify
The Game
The Night
Indestructible
Stricken
In Flames
Discover Me Like Emptiness
Only For the Weak - one of the greatest songs of all time
Alias
Delight and Angers
(And if you like instrumental stuff, Jester's Dance, Dialogue with the Stars, Man Made God)
All That Remains
Empty Inside
Not Alone
Chiron
Six
This Calling
And Death in my Arms
Be The Catalyst
Truth be told, I'm not a fan of classic rock/metal.
And dimsah, I like Nickelback but I don't think it's metal.

I'm definitely more into progressive metal and as a guitar player, drawn to interesting guitar parts.
You can't love the Gothenburg sound without loving At the Gates, hell you can't like metal without liking At The Gates.
Favorite band right now has to be Cynic though. I saw them this past year with Between the Buried and Me, Scale the Summit and the Devin Townsend Project, and it was the best show I've ever seen hands down. Hours of musical mastery, it was a show where not a single one of the bands was a letdown, pretty rare, but Cynic was on another level than the rest.
The lights dimmed to a pale blue, and the audience just stood there and soaked in the music. No one was there to do anything but enjoy the moment and it was incredible.
Recommend: Evolutionary Sleeper, The Space for This, How Could I, and pretty much their entire discography.
Some of my other favorites:
Between the Buried and Me- Listen to the last two tracks off their last album (if you have 30 minutes to spare) and I dare you not to love these guys. Their album Colors was album of the year on pretty much every metal reviewers list a few years back for good reason.
Recommend: Desert of Song/Swim to the Moon, Colors, Mordecai, Aspirations
After the Burial- Pretty metalcore, but have some really interesting things going on with their rhythms and guitar parts. Amazing live.
Recommend: Berzerker, Cursing Akenaten, A Steady Decline, Fingers Like Daggers
Animals as Leaders-Instrumental progressive metal with some electronic influences. Absolutely amazing guitar work
Recommend: Tempting Time, Thoroughly at Home, CAFO
Scale the Summit-Another instrumental progressive metal band, out of Houston. Very tasteful with some rather good guitar work as well.
Recommend: Age of the Tide, the Great Plains, Saragasso Sea
The Crown-A bit down the line on the obscure scale, but have probably the meanest sounding death growls in all of metal. Had one album where the original singer left and Tomas from At the Gates took over vocal duties.
Recommend: Death is the Hunter, Executioner (Slayer of the Light), Deathexplosion
Protest the Hero-Very interesting progressive act. While the singer does scream at points, his clean vocals are the highlight of the records. The rest of the band are no slouches either and play their respective instruments at high levels. Very challenging.
Recommend: Blindfolds Aside, Bloodmeat, The Dissentience, The Divine Suicide of K

I've been looking for something new that really hits me lately and I've yet to find anything I thought was really good. I've tried dozens of bands, all from similar genres.
Necrophagist isn't bad but it gets boring pretty fast. The song "seven" off of Epitaph is alright. Reminds me of Morbid Angel from the early 90's.
Sonic Syndicate, Gojira, Melechesh, Dagoba Face, Aeon of Horus, Quo Vadis haven't really made the cut.

Holy Shit! I haven't been keeping up. Fear Factory released "Mechanize" earlier this year which has Dino returning on guitar.
I knew Dino was back in FF but I didn't know they put out another album yet.
I thought there was still some legal issues between Bell and Olde Wolbers/Herrera about the band name.

Man, it's a great disc. It's no Soul of a New Machine but it's
top notch. Hoglan is on drums and I hardly miss Raymond. He plays circles around Raymond in my opinion. Yeah. I believe Christian and Raymond threatened a lawsuit but I don't think anything came of it cuz they're touring right now.

I'm listening to it right now. Christploitation to be exact which is my favorite track so far.
I always liked Herrera but when I heard Hoglan was replacing him, I had absolutely no problem with it. I'm glad Dino's back in though. I prefer his tone and style a lot more than Olde Wolbers.

Metal is at a weird point right now. Too many sub genres. Too many cookie cutter metal groups. Too much cheese. The last thing I always pay attention to is the lyrics. The content and delivery. If it gels then it's a win. Gaza is an awesome group out of salt lake. They're just a wall of destruction. Nothing thrashy just brutality. There's Converge. Nasum. So much out there.

ehh, I think there's always been to many cookie cutter groups. Anytime a new style or sound comes out, you have that small window to listen to the trendsetters before you're inundated with copycat garbage.
I'll check out some of those bands. Thanks.

Yeah, it's hard to pick the right song because many of them sound so different. They're Danes and currently the shooting stars in the scene in Europe - touring with Metallica and AC/DC.
What I like is that all their albums tell a story and are connected to each other.
What I can suggest too is bands like:
Eluveitie
Wintersun

Oh, btw. for the poster who liked Iced Earth...
check out Avantasia - Great sideproject by Matthias Sammet the lead singer of EdGuy. He's pretty much gathering musicians from other bands for one time projects around him like Marko Hietala or even Alice Cooper. Bit soft but I like the sound.

Here was the Iron Maiden setlist. They played about an hour and 45 minutes (Dream Theater played 45 minutes).
They sounded good but I think a lot of the crowd was getting a bit worn out on all of the post-2000 material (every song until Fear of the Dark was from Brave New World or newer.)
The Wicker Man
Ghost Of The Navigator
Brighter Than A Thousand Suns
El Dorado
Paschendale
The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg
These Colours Don't Run
Blood Brothers
Wildest Dreams
No More Lies
Brave New World
Fear Of The Dark
Iron Maiden
Encore:
The Number of the Beast
Hallowed Be Thy Name
Running Free

Okay. I've listened to this latest Fear Factory album a couple of times now and I think it's their best work since Obsolete. Dino makes them sound so much better.
I felt demanufacture was their last good album. Obsolete just got waaay to slick for me. Soul of a new machine to Demanufacture was a shock enough. Dino is a machine. An eating machine too. :lol him and hoglan are a match made in heaven.

I was pretty disappointed. I think a lot of the crowd was too. They weren't hostile about it, but you could read the disbelief on their faces after the show.
I've been reading discussions where IM fanboys are coming to the band's defense because the last tour was more of a Greatest Hits tour, so this time they wanted to play more new stuff. I can sort of understand that, but I still think you need to mix in more classics. I mean it was an hour and 15 minutes before they played anything pre-2000. You can't tailor a setlist that appeals only to your hardcore fans then play that in front of 12K people, most of whom identify more with the older stuff.
Or if you really want to play 11 songs from the last three albums, at least play longer than an hour and 45 minutes.
I also wanted more Dream Theater. They only played 45 minutes (six songs.)
All I know is Rush is next for me.
Me too :tu. Now there's a band that knows how to blend old and new material and give the crowd their money's worth.

I liked the concept of Obsolete and I thought it was Bell's best vocal work.
He fine tuned his dry lung from the more baritone growl and was also able to maintain pitch better with his melodic style.
I've always thought his vocals set him apart from many others in the same genre because of that.
And "Resurrection" was fucking epic. I got more than a few people in to Fear Factory just from that song alone.
Obsolete is my favorite album with Demanufacture right behind it.

you know, i've always wondered why that is. i don't get it. i have many friends that shart themselves when his name or a band he's in comes up. does he do any actually writing of music? not talking lyrics here? i saw tomahawk open for someone i saw and it was lightly entertaining. he sure knows how to coddle a mic like everyone else does these days.

yeah. obsolete is a good album. resurrection is actually one of my fav tunes on there. if you dig his vocals on there then you should really check out godflesh if you haven't. you'll see where he got his influence. check out Streetcleaner and Hymns from them. good stuff.

I've listened to Godflesh before but it was years ago.
Side note. Mike Patton is "eccentric" and goofy but he really can do almost any vocal style you can imagine. Most of his contributions to his bands were lyrics though and not the music itself.
FNM is a favorite of mine though so I'm bias.

Other than "And the World Returned", I don't like At The Gates. But I really like
Disturbed, Bullet for My Valentine, All That Remains, In Flames, Scar Symmetry, 5 Finger Death Punch, Trivium and Killswitch Engage. And mixed stuff from Drowning Pool, Machine Head etc.
